They Once Won *Smoke Rights/
Co-eds Now Seek Right Smokes
Ity Joyce Johns
The; co-eds of the University of
Oeorgia have at last won their four-
year fight for smoking privileges on
the campus. A new student govern
ment constitution approved by Presl-
dent S. V. Sanford calls for Installa
tion of smoking rooms In Dormito
ries.—Newspaper Item. Monroe.
April. 1034
"Oee, I wish I knew a guy named
Joe!" Biphed Ciggy Flanagan in the
middle of a nicotine tit. Hortense
Houten, an astronomy major, had
no patience with her flippant room
mate’s endless complaints nbout the
scarcity of cigarettes.
Hortense adjusted her horn-rim
med glasses and was well on the
way to sojourn to the heavenly
bodies when Ciggy, who was star
ing out the window, Jumped like
a holt had hit her and shouted:
"Hey. Jane, where'd you get cig
arettes?"
"Joe’s Place!” screamed Jane.
And with that. Ciggy darted out,
dragging bewildered Hortense be
hind her. Breathless, the two girls
| rushed into Joe’s Place. A barrl-
I cade met their eyes. No less than
i twenty-five ahead of them, all eager-
j ly awaiting their pack of smokes.
Time passed slowly, but finally
Ciggy reached the counter, only to
be confronted with the sickening
sound:
"Sorry, that's all.”
"Oh well,” Ciggy rationalized,
"they didn't have my brAnd any
way.’’
Hortense, who had been lolling
over a bar of chocolate that her
obesity wouldn't allow her to buy,
turned to her disappointed friend.
"Ciggy.” she said meekly, "that
soldier over there told that girl in
the red sweater that he heard a
Marine in the bowling alley say that
Mack's Drug Store had some cigar
ettes an hour ago.” In a second
Ciggy was half way to Mack’s, Hor
tense trailing behind.
The campus smokers had smelled
the whiff of nicotine before Ciggy,
and now ten husky men stood in
front of her, pushing and shoving,
dggv glanced in' the carton on the
counter—Just as she expected—
only nine packs left.
