LOR AN SMITH
Track Captain Ends Career
Grit and determination have marked
track captain, Loran Smith.
“Smitty,” as he is known to his
teammates, concludes a rags-to-
riches track story Saturday in the
Georgia AAU meet at Atlanta by
running both the mile and two-mile.
At the start of his junior season
last year, the Wrightsville flash had
never bettered five minutes in the
mile, which is mediocre even for
high school. In the first dual meet
of the ’59 campaign he ran 4:35 in
the mile and has narrowed it since
then to 4:23.6, only 1.6 seconds off
the school record.
the character of this year’s
‘‘With tremendous burning ambi
tion and work,” said Coach "Spec”
Towns, “Loran became a good col
lege distance runner overnight.”
As to his greatest accomplishment
while at Georgia, Smith does not
mention any of his many track wins.
Instead he modestly and sincerely
says, "The many friends I have made
at the University have made these
college days the happiest of my
life.”

Sports Eililor
It seems to have passed so quick
ly, but once again the Georgia sports
are through for another three
months, The next activity of the
Bulldogs will be next fall when the
football squad starts the season off
with the Alabama grid contest.
In these past nine months some
of the most exciting athletic events
have taken place on the Bulldog
Sporlscene. For example. . . .
Who can forget the dramatic, des
peration pass from the hands of
Francis Tarkenton to the outstretch
ed hands of BUI Herron—a pass com
pletion that brought Georgia the
SEC crown, paved the way for the
Orange Bowl romp past Missouri,
and landed a most deserving fifth
place ranking in the nation?
And who can forget the come-
from-behind drive by Cobby Ware
that saw him tie for the SIC golf
tournament championship and then
go on to win the tournament when
LSU’s Don Essig was unable to show
up for the play-off?
And how about the excitement
that was caused by the news that
the University was finally going to
get the much-needed coliseum?
What about the Bulldog basketball
squad stomping Auburn, the SEC
champions, during the regular sea
son?
And who can forget that Georgia
rolled over the Wreck of Georgia
Tech in football for the third straight
season, building up a 21-0 lead by
the half-way mark and then coasting
for the victory?
I can’t, can you?
