WHATLEY’S ELEMENT of all-
roundtiess dates back to his college
days at Alabama where he is recog
nized as her greatest all-round ath
lete. He earned 10 varsity letters
while at Alabama, three each in foot
ball, basketball, and baseball, and
one in track.
Coach Whatley has done a fine
job with the baseball team, winning
the SEC pennant in 1953 and 1954
and coming in second In 1955. His
1956 'Dogs were runner-up In the
eastern division with a 16-6 record.

WHATLEY is the South's repre
sentative on the NCAA baseball rules
committee and Is also on the U. S.
Olympic baseball committee for 1960.
Coach Whatley would be an asset
to any coaching staff, and the Uni
versity has every right to be proud
of him.
Although the '59 edition of Coach
Whatley’s baseball team didn't win
the crown, they showed signs of be
coming a contender toward the end
of the season, and they are expected
to be in the thick of the pennant
fight next year.
PRETTY LAURIE ANDERSON lias been selected by THE RED AND
BLACK sports department as Sports Queen of the quarter. The cute

Filters
for flavor
as no single
filter can/;
HERE’S HOW THE DUAL FILTER DOES IT:
1. It combines a unique inner filter of ACTIVATED CHARCOAL . . .
definitely proved to make the smoke of a cigarette mild and smooth...
2. with a pure white outer filter. Together they select and balance the
flavor elements in the smoke. Tareyton’s flavor-balance gives you
the best taste of the best tobaccos.

The highly-touted Louisiana State
Tigers romped away with their
fourth straight SEC crown, followed
by Florida in second place and Au
burn in third .
The big guns for the Athenians
were Mark Carr, broad jump, who
captured the only first place for the
Bulldogs; Warren Gray, discus, and
Steve Squires, 880.
Squires, although he finished
fourth in the 880, broke the recog
nized University of Georgia record
for the event, set in 1959 by Buddy
Broadnax.
Don Soberdash finished third In
javelin competition; Gray was fifth
in the discus division; and John
Crawford placed in the pole vault.
Individual star for the meet was
Georgia Tech’s shot putter Ed Nut
ting, Atlanta, who set a new con
ference record.
The only double winner in the
meet was Florida’s Tommy Michaels,
who won both low aud high hurdles.
