Student Parking Rights
Campus police have been notfled
that atudent couplea may legally
park anywhere on the campua until
il:15 p.m. on week-nights and un
til 12:30 a m. on weekend*.

Dean Tate aaid that couplea have
alwnya been allowed to park in
dormitory parking areas, "but a
fellow aometlmea likes to get his
date a little further away from
things."
Dean Williams said that we "Just
clarified our position on this eternal
problem."
Me added that the University is
neither condoning nor promoting
parking, but said, “If they have to
park, we feel it better to park on
the campus Instead of on some lone
some county road."

Fire Guts Sigma Nu House;
Damage Estimated at $33*000
The Sigma Nu fraternity house
was gutted by a fire in the early
pre-dawn hours of Dec. 14, causing
approximately $33,000 damage to
the French Chateau-styled house on
River Road.
The blaze was discovered by one
of the fraternity members, Vaughn
Rogers of Clayton, as he was study
ing for final examinations.
The fire originated In the
attic, which had been converted
by the fraternity to a library-
Htutly hall area several years
ago. Apparent cause of the
hlazc was traced to a shortage
In electrical wires In the attic.
Rogers wns studying in the living
room of the house when he noticed
smoke filtering Into the first floor
room and a blinking of the lights
on that floor.
Upon Investigating the second
floor living quarters, he said he
discovered billows of smoke, but no
sign of a blaze. He then located the
fire In the attlc-llbrary and immedi
ately awoke other sleeping fra
ternity members and placed a call
to the Athens Fire Department.
At the time of the fire, 19 fra
ternity members were in the house,
which is normally occupied by 38.
The remaining 19 had already re
turned to their homes for the Christ
mas holidays.

Membership Drive
Membership in the University of
Georgia’s Alumni Society is led by
seven of the state’s 159 counties.
Each of these seven counties
boasts more than 100 active mem
bers as of Dec. 1, with Fulton Coun
ty now holding the number one spot
long held by Clarke County. Con
tributing $28,702, 1,080 Fulton
Countians lead the membership
drive, while Clarke County is repre
sented by 1,036 members and $17,-
097 In contributions.
The other leaders in order are
DeKalb, 233 and $2,929; Chatham,
228 und $2,589: Richmond, 176 and
$2,259; Bibb, 151 and $4,876; and
Muscogee, 116 and $3,008.

Damage to the house was con
centrated in the attic area and
a portion of the roof. Water
damage was also heavy to walls,
ceilings, and furnishings. Some
fraternity records were also
destroyed.
Renovation to the house is cur
rently underway by the Mathis
Construction Company of Athens,
and expected to be completed in
early February.
Sigma Nu President Dedi Thomas
said that at the present time the
fraternity lias been provided living
quarters in Dudley Hall by Univer
sity Housing Director John Storey,
and that a small portion of the fra
ternity will live there until the
renovation is completed.
Thomas said the fraternity will
continue to be active in all phases
of University life as far as possible.
The house was constructed in 1941
and was the first fraternity house
to be built on River Road.
