Busy Copas Trades
Training for Guidance
A 10-sport man doesn’t have much time to relax. Diek
Copas still has to worry about all the athletes in the Uni
versity. but lie's able to take things a little easier since he
stowed away his trainer’s bag.
Copas was named academic
adviser to athletes last quar
ter. He was head trainer for
two years, since coming from
Auburn with Vince Dooley.
“Instead of changing from
season to season, I’m doing one
Job,” Copas said. “I thought
I could help more by getting
closer to the boys.”
Many university athletic
departments are hiring aca
demic advisers, Copas said.
It Is his Job to make sure
athletes take enough credit
hours to remain eligible, and
maintain their grades.
"It a freshman runs into
difficulty, he tends to get dis
couraged,” Copas said. "He
doesn’t know what to do, and
may think of quitting school.”
Athletes must have com
pleted 35 hours in the previous
three quarters to be eligible
to compete. A 60 average also
is required. The 1.6 average
required of freshmen in a re
cent NCAA ruling is equal to
altout 68, Copas snid.
When an athlete encounters
academic problems, Copas ar
ranges for tutoring. Severe
problems are referred to guid
ance counselors.
Copas holds a B.S. in Phy
sical Education from Auburn,
and has completed 18 hours
on his master’s degree. He is
married and is the father of
two girls, ages 10 and four.
