Hold Meeting
In Louisiana
The 36th annual meeting of the Southeastern Conference is
being held at the Sheraton-Hotel in New Orleans Wednesday.
Thursday and Friday. January 22-23 24.
Three days of meetings between athletic directors, head
football coaches, business managers, information directors,
faculty chairmen of athletics and the presidents of the ten SEC
institutions are planned. The AD's and coaches meet Wednes
day 1 00 to 5:00 p m., then again Thursday. 9:00 a m. to 5:00
Then Friday, the presidents meet at 9:00 a m and again at 1:30
p m. in the annual business session.
Dr John A. Hunter, president of Louisiana State University,
is president of the conference Dr Frank Rose, president
of the University of Alabama, is vice-president and Dr Boyd
McWhorter, faculty chairman of athletics at the University, is
secre ta ry - trea surer
G. W (Jeff i Beard of Auburn University is chairman of the
coaches and athletic directors group: Ralph (Hobbit > Brown of
Miss State University is chairman of the business managers;
and Buddy Davidson of Auburn is president of the information
directors.
Discussion in the preliminary meetings pointed toward pos
sible action in the final business meeting will include the fol
lowing subjects: limits on grants-in-aid for student athletes,
adjustment to the NCAA's 1 600 rule, participation in post-sea
son basketball tournaments other than the NCAA, a round-rob
in scheduled for baseball, and adopting wrestling as a confer
ence sport.
Commissioner Coleman prepares for the SEC meeting after
participating in the NCAA meetings at Los Angeles, where the
SEC plan of allowing freshmen to play on varsity teams other
than football and basketball was solidly endorsed He says.
We anticipate an amicable meeting in which discussion of our
mutual problems will heip to crystallize the various considera
tions If an existing rule is altered, or new one adopted, it will
be done by agreement of the presidents for continued improve
ment of the conference as a whole.
