Frisbee fever here
By GENE SCIALDONE

You’ve seen them in
Memorial Plaza. You've seen
them in parking lots. You’ve
seen them at Legion Field
during concerts. In fact, you’ve
seen them from beaches to
playgrounds. What? Frisbees
and frisbee players. And you’ve
said to yourself, “Don’t they
have anything better to do
than toss that dumb disc
around?”
Well, that’s like asking if
Andy Johnson doesn't have
anything better to do than
throw footballs or if Danny
Birchmore doesn’t have
anything better to do than
smash tennis balls all day. If
you don’t believe it, you’d
better get your subscription to
IFA News. For quite a while
now the frisbee tossers have
been formed into the
International Frisbee
Association (IFA)
headquartered in Los Angeles.
The IFA News, the IFA’s
official mouthpiece, carries all
the latest news from the
wonderful world of the
dazzling disc. IFA chapters
have been formed all over the
country and new chapters can
be formed through the IFA for
only $7.50. Each player in
each chapter receives his own
personal IFA number.
A National Junior Frisbee
Championship is held each year
and this year more than 560
cities throughout the country
will participate. Boys and girls
through the age of 15 will vie
for regional awards of a $100
savings bond and national
awards of $1,000, $500 and
$250 savings bonds. The
competition is sponsored by
Wham-O and Parks and
Recreation Departments.
Marathons are the big thing
in the frisbee world Recently,
members of Phi Sigma Kappa
fraternity at California
established a new Frisbee
Marathon record of 240 hours
and 19 minutes. Although they
don’t expect the record to last
long, the Californians are
proud of doing what’s never
been done before.
The Frisbee fever even
reached international
proportions recently at William
and Mary College when a
member of the visiting Chinese
ping-pong team went out into
the crowd to flip a dazzling
disc with one of the students.
This past weekend, the
International Frisbee
Tournament took place at
Copper Harbor, Michigan. It
was the 15th annual event of
its kind. The theme for this
year’s competition was
“International Understanding
through Frisbee Competition.”
Invitations went out to teams
from Red China, Taiwan,
Israel, the United Arab
Republic, the IRA and the
British government.

Memories of
CAN-AMs past
I believe that every person
who has ever been to an auto
race is really a “Walter Mitty”
in disguise. Some say people
come to auto races to see the
wrecks, and this is
undoubtedly true in some cases
(ligu re-eight racing for
example) but the majority that
come to see Can-Am racing are
not bloodseekers. They come
to have a good time, and they
really do.
They enjoy the blast of the
engines, the quick maneuvering
of the cars, and the sheer
excitement of flying down a
straightaway at 200 mph and
not having to worry about the
state hoys pulling out behind
you from some dirt road. Each
spectator secretly drives the
cars and each would probably
jump at the chance to get
behind the wheel of a McLaren
or a Lola, even if it is just
sitting still.
I’ve been to every Can-Am
race at Road Atlanta, and I’ve
noticed that the race and the
cars are not the only
interesting things to see at the
track. The race fans themselves
are great competition for the
attention of other fans.
At last year’s race, Leroy
Yarborough, one of the best
stock car drivers in the world,
was behind the wheel of a Lola
for his first attempt at Can-Am
racing. As Yarborough came
flying down the back straight
headed for a sharp right turn,
an old-timer in overalls sitting
in his pickup pulling on a
Budweiser hollered, “Hey,
Leroy, remember, you gotta
turn right in this race.” The old
stock car fan must have known
something, because later
Yarborough lost it in the esses
during j right turn, ending up
with a smashed car and the
realization the Can-Am racing
is a little tougher than hanging
to the left and giving it the
gun.
As I strolled around the
track, I came upon one of the
great contrasts in how fans
watch a race. An old pickup
was parked backwards to the
track, with a piece of plywood
over the body and two old
farmers sitting in beach chairs,
guzzling beer and hollering at
the drivers, despite the fact the
drivers were far away by the
time they finished hollering.
Next to the pickup was
parked a beautiful Ferrari, one
that goes for around $20,000.
Inside sat an extremely
attractive woman, dressed
more for the Kentucky Derby
than Road Atlanta. Her escort
was wearing an outfit Straight
out of “Gentleman’s
Quarterly,” and looked like a
fugitive from a Silva Thins
commercial. Between them sat
a sterling silver champagne
bucket, with a bottle of bubbly
nestled therein. They had all
the windows rolled up, the
engine running, and the air
conditioner going as they
sipped. I left the scene and
returned a few hours later. One
of the farmers was out cold,
and the other was still keeping
Pabst breweries in business.
The Ferrari couple had
apparently become bored with
the race and were intensely
involved in a chess game. Oh
well, there’s more than one
way to watch a race.
The pits provide the most
action, not only with the cars
going in and out, but also the
women going in and out. I
found myself watching women
instead of cars, but what

would not. Racing groupies arc
the most beautiful of the
groupie species I have ever
seen. They closely follow the
races and the drivers and more
than one can take a car apart
:;ndputit back together again
like a veteran mechanic. They
are not only beautiful, but also
very friendly. Drivers say
racing requires great
concentration, and with
distractions like these, it’s
amazing they can even start
their cars.
Saturday night before the
race is party night. Parties
range from a group sitting
around a campfire drinking
wine and smoking pipes to
huge mobs rocking out till
morning to a live band in the
infield. Sometimes the fans
enjoy the parties so much, they
forget to watch the race the
next day.
The best way to watch the
race is to get a cooler full of
your favorite beverage, some
suntan oil, and a blanket, then
relax and watch what you
please.
