Well, after 10 long, rain-filled weeks of dreary boredom
spring quarter, and the universal feeling of summentis
that automatically goes with it. has arrived
The signs are everywhere Frisbees and skateboards
have invaded the University in full force, the sales in the
lingerie sections of local department stores has dropped 50
per cent since the thermometer first hit 80 degrees wo
weeks ago, and class attendance has already stalled
declining after just one week of boring lectures.
The list goes on and on. But perhaps the most prominent
one. and the one that affects everybody, is the last one
mentioned above. With all the thoughts conjured up by
dreaming of the luxuries of summer, it’s nearly impossible
to concentrate on matters of the moment
Now, after all that jibberish, I have finally arrived at the
thesis of this rather inane column
After spending many, many hours the past two quarters
behind a typewriter, the sports staff is also tired of the
routine and chomping at the bit in anticipation of summer.
When that happens, it’s hard for the mind to come up with
original and interesting material for columns (as I am
currently proving! and feature stories.
That's where you can come in and can, hopefully, help
make the sports pages better and more exciting than ever
before As you have undoubtedly noticed the past week,
The Red and Black's advertising has picked up
considerably and we will have big papers the rest of the
year.
this means, of course, an increase in the amount of
sports coverage, and starting next week we will be havinr
two sports pages quite often. And, like I’ve already sai',
it’s hard to produce originality day after day.
If you have any suggestions about how we can improve
our coverage or if you have any "flashes of brilliance"
about a possible story, please let us Know. Your little tidbit
may even seem ridiculous, but it could lead to something
else
Remember, we are trying to sell our product, and no
product will ever be useful unless it pleases the consumer.
I would like to take the rest of my space to briefly thank
the coaches of winter quarter sports teams for the help
they gave The Red and Black writers assigned to those
sports. Coaches Frank Keller (wrestling), Pete Scholle
(swimming!, Ken Rosemond (basketball), John Guthrie
(junior varsity basketball), and Lee Cunningham
(gymnastics) were all more than willing to give up part of
their time for questions.

“If you can keep from giving
up. you always have a chance
to win.” said Coach Jim
Whatley, after the baseball
team came from tar behind to
beat Western Michigan Tues
day.
“Any time you win it helps
your morale.” he continued
“This win helped mine and I’m
sure it'll help theirs (the
players) ”

the featured speaker.
Vincent, who hurled three
scoreless innings to earn the
victory, and catcher John

SEVER \l. factors have hurt
the baseball program. Whatley
said One is the freshman
ruling in football, which cost
the baseball team in manpow
er. Another factor is the rule
that no more than five
scholarships can be given in
any year, thus cutting the
number of quality players
According to Whatley, three
players were lost last year and
two cannot be replaced be
cause of the scholarship rule
