A little hitting
and some runs
All season long, the baseball team has been suffering
from a lack of runs, as a 1-5 record prior to Tuesday's
contest proves The pitching was above average, as the
team’s impressive E.R.A. would suggest, and the hitters
had produced more safeties than their opponents, but the
hits just weren’t coming at the right time and many
runners were left on base
All that changed Tuesday against Western Michigan.
Gary Nevinger’s wildness and some hard outfield smashes
helped the visitors build up a 6-1 lead in the early innings
The Dog diamondmen never quit, though, and four runs in
the eighth, one in the ninth, and another in the 11th
produced a thrilling 7-6 victory.
In the picture at left, left fielder Steve Carp, who sroked
a key two-run single in the eighth inning, lashes out at a
pitch, while second baseman Terry Thompson, right,
crosses the plate with Georgia’s first run.

Florida
Bv KEITH JONES
The Florida Gators, led by
three star-studded freshmen,
were predicted to be the team
to beat in SEC tennis. And
maybe, for once, the experts
knew what. they were talking
about. To date. Dan Magill's
Georgia netters have proved
them correct twice!
However, in spite of the
’Dogs tough 5-4 decision over
Florida in Gainesville on
Monday, Dapper Dan still
believes the Gators are the
favorite in the conference.
"Our victory over them
(Florida) still has to be
considered an upset. Ovbiously,
we were pleased to win. but I
think Florida has the strongest
team, at least on paper.’’
Magill added in his familiar
modest manner
IT TOOK two sparkling
performances by Manuel Diaz
and Bob Tanis at numbers one
and two singles to get by
Florida’s much-heralded duo of
Greg King and Juan Diaz,
respectively.
Both matches went three
sets with Georgia's Diaz taking
King 6-2, 3-6. 6-3 and Tanis
outducling Juan Diaz 5-7, 6-3,
6-3.
“Manuel probably played his
best match of the season and
Big Bob came through with
probably the best match of his
career.” beamed a joyous
Magill
Although the number one
doubles team of Tanis and
Gordon Smith was beaten.
Magill had ample reason to
brag on his numbers two and
three doubles teams. Both the
pairings of Diaz and Bill
Kopecky and Carey Browder-
David Dick easily whipped
their opponents in straight
sets.
“Our number one doubles
wasn’t quite up to par. but we
played extremely well at
number two and three Flori
da’s two and three doubles had
beaten North Carolina's pair
ings at two and three, which
will give you some idea how
tough they were.’’ remarked
Magill
IN THE OTHER singles.
Gordon Smith dropped a close
decision to Gator Kay Heide-
ma. a former number one
singles player. 5-7. 6-3, 6-3 at
number three Another former
number one for the Gators.
Jim Oescher. squeaked by
Carey Browder 6-4. 6-4 On
court five. Mike Borling.
another promising freshman,
was extended to the tiebreaker
twice in order to overcome
Kopecky 7-6. 7-6 Dick. Geor
gia’s own star freshman, wiped
out David Pressley 6-1. 6-4
‘This win over them means
a lot more to us than when we
beat them up in the NIT in Wis
consin.” said Magill “We
barely won 5-4 then and
Florida was minus two of their
top players at the time.”
However. Coach Dan failed
to mention that the Dogs have
been playing without one of
their own top performers in
Brent Hughes Hughes has
been out of action for about
two months with a nagging foot
injury
“I really don’t know when
he’ll be ready to go again. He
may make the trip to South
Carolina this Saturday but he
definitely won’t play,” com
plained Magill
FOLLOWING the ’Dogs trip
to Columbia this weekend, they
will host a heavy slate of
matches next week The list of
foes invading the Classic City
includes Harvard. Virginia.
Wake Forest, and Florida, all
of which sport fine teams.
Wake Forest, which has also
upset the Gators, will bring an
especially strong contingent A
week from Sunday, Georgia,
now 6 1 on the year, will face a
fine Tennessee team, another
definite SEC contender
Meanwhile, those Florida
Gators seemed to remain on
Coach Magill’s mind a bit
more than the others.
“They have a real good
chance of beating us. even with
the home court advantage on
our side this time, he
