Communiversity needs volunteers

By BILL Kl\(.
The deadline is April 16 for
turning in applications to the
Georgia Intern Program ac
cording to Ted Hammock,
Assistant to the Vice President
for Instruction.
The Georgia Intern Program
affords college students an
opportunity to spend a quarter
working for a state agency
with the chance of earning
academic credit.
The program, which is
administered through the Go
vernor's office, seeks to
broaden the experience of
students by offering them a
learning experience off-cam
pus which stresses the comple
tion of a specific project,
rather than testing theories in
the field.
The Intern Program supplies
manpower assistance for state
agencies while providing con
structive service opportunities
for students seeking to partici
pate in the solution of social
and economic problems.
According to Hammock, a
larger number of students will
be selected from the Universi
ty than the 40 who participated
last summer. "While the
program is open to all
students, priority is given to
qualified upper classmen and
graduate students," Hammock
added.
Applicants will be interview
ed by a committee made up of
representatives from the Geor
gia Intern Program and the
University of Georgia. Applica
tions approved will be forward
ed to the Intern Program
where they will be matched
with requests for internships
from various agencies.
Virtually all state agencies
are participating in the pro
gram, which will last approxi
mately the length of the
summer academic quarter.
The Internship is a full time
position with students receiv
ing a stipend of $600
Arrangements for credit are
worked out with the faculty of
the school or department in
which the intern is enrolled
Students interested in the
program should pick up

applications in Hammock's
office in Room 204 of Old
College. Any students with
questions should contact Ham
mock at his office or call him
at 2-5977
For those students who are
interested in the program but
w ill be unable to work in it this
summer Hammock said appli
cations will soon be taken for
similar internships this fall.
