The horses with the big feet
which are the symbol of the
nation's largest brewery firm
will be shown in Athens on
March 26 and 27
Each year the Budweiser
Clydesdales travel over 40,000
miles which probably makes
them the most widely traveled
horses in the United States.
They are viewed by millions
of people as they appear in
parades, state fairs, horse
shows and television commer
cials.
Premium Distributing Co. is
sponsoring the local Clydesdale
showing Daily appearances
have been scheduled for today,
March 26. 4-8 p.m. at the
Coliseum parking lot and on
Wednesday from 3-7 p.m. on
campus with a parade through
downtown Athens scheduled
for 5 p.m.
When on the road, the horses
travel as a caravan in three
large specially built vans,
which are 40 feet long and
eight feet wide. A separate van
is used to transport the three
and one-half ton brass trim
med wagon.
Averaging 2,300 pounds each
in weight, the Clydesdales
stand about six feet at the
shoulder. Each shoe weighs
four and three-fourths pounds

ceremonies held in connection
with the dedication of a new

heart abnormalities
The new addition to the
health center, which brings the
total space allocated for health
care at the University to 60,000
square feet, was dedicated on
March 21. The 36.700-square-

out-patient clinics and special

hitch to the wagon costs about
$20,(MM).
The eight horse hitch and
wagon became a registered
trademark of Anheuser-Busch,
Inc. in August. 1971
According to the firm, horses
have been associated with the
brewing industry since its be
ginning They supplied the
power to get the grain to the
brewery and then delivered the
finished product
In the days before refrigera
tion and pasteurization, it was
said that a brewery's local
marketing area could Ik? mea
sured by how far the horses
could travel in a day and get
back home by nightfall
Anheuser-Busch used draft
horses to pull its brewery
wagons until the time of prohi
bition when the stables were
closed.
When the repeal of prohibi
tion appeared certain August
A. Busch, Jr planned a special
way to commemorate repeal
He secretly bought a team of
Clydesdale horses and had
them trained to pull a huge
brewery wagon.
On April 8, 1933, the day
after prohibition was repealed,
August. Jr asked his father to
join him on Pestalozzi St.
outside the Brewhouse to see
his new car When they reach
ed the street. August, Sr.
stopped in his tracks. Instead
of the expected automobile,
there stood the Clydesdales
with their gleaming leather,
brass harness and shining Bud
weiser wagon
Since that first appearance,
the fame of the Clydesdales
has spread across the nation
and around the world
