Slugfest approaches

win two
here, surely
The participants are, of course, two extreme
ly skilled pugilists, champion George Foreman
and challenger Ken Norton, who will have a
maximum of 45 minutes to rake over the other
guy and leave himself standing at the* top of
boxing's heap with only one more obstacle
between himself and total supremacy The
other obstacle, of course, being Muhammad
Ali, who won his end of the championship derby
last January in New York over Smoked Out
Joe
That’s the way thing* usually work in boxing,
heavyweight division in particular There will
be a lull period of varying lengths (such as the
one between March, 1971. when Frazier beat
Ali, and January, 1973, when Foreman made
his stunning victory) when one fighter has the
rest of the pack down for the count
Then utter chaos, frenzy, and new life and
excitement set in all at once Foreman's
victory pulled the finger out of the dike
heavyweights Rejuvenation came in the forms
•of such neophytes as ex-con Ron Lyle and
hard-hitting Farnie Shavers There was also
the perennially “resurgent’’ Jerry Quarry to
add to the picture. Don’t make jest of Quarry
Muhammad Ali never had a better tune-up
man. (Heard about the new Jerry Quarry doll?
Wind him up and he gets his head punched
out.)
JOE FRAZIER. I’m afraid, will be forced to
close out his career contending with the Joe
Bugners and George Chuvalos while hollering
for a rematch with Ali The man hasn’t fought
a good fight in four years and he lacks the
temm
rise, its no-defense polic> will lead to more #
multiple knockdowns Frazier can still make a
lot of money in boxing, but it's a safe wager :£
that he will never wear the crown again :$
Therefore, as is fairly obvious, all the worthy
contenders for the title, and the term is use #
loosely, can be counted on three fingers, at #
most with the number to be reduced short I >
Fans can hardly wait to see who converges on#
Ali. as if there were really some doubt about it #:
The Foreman Norton bout could prove to be the
equivalent of the UCLA NC State basket ball $:
game, the winner to be the eventual champion#
regardless of the opponent $•
It should definitely prove to be an entertain
ing match Lots of technique, strategy, and#
power, for both men have ample amounts of all#:
these and many more Norton, much to his>:•:
detriment, does not possess a major-league*
knockout punch He can do little more than;:*:
move quickly around the ring and throws
well-arranged combinations with his long, lean#:
arms. Whether he can go the distance is#
another question. He is a superbly conditioned#
but a frail man. compared to many heavy ®
weights Speed and surprise ma> be the only#
elements he has in his favor. $
FOREMAN, counting his Frazier fight, has*
fought only three (actually less than three• #
rounds in the last 15 months Other than lift#:
opponents off the mat with a single swipe, his
abilities remain somewhat in doubt His long.#:
powerful arms along with his overall superiorl y
ty in strength and stamina (which is merely aj#
supposition) should be able to wear Norton#
down, if not deck him right off the bell

To paraphrase an old cliche,
it’s all over but the stats.
Georgia's cagers compiled a
6-20 mark, good enough for
rock bottom in the SEC. but
things may be improving short
ly with the recent announce
ment of the signing to a
grant-in-aid of Anthony Flana
gan. Southwest-Atlanta High’s
answer to a David Thompson
Bob Griese in the same pack
age. He was the most sought
after Georgia athlete in recent
memory, but desired "to stay
close to home." His dual sport
status at Georgia has yet to be
determined
As for the rest of the team,
junior forward Billy Magarity
wound up as the scoring and
rebounding leader, averaging
16.3 and 6 6, respectively. Char
lie Anderson had more total
points and rebounds, but played
in two more games than Maga
rity Anderson, who got a raw
deal by being omitted from all
the ALL-SEC teams b\ the
press, is the only Bulldog who
will graduate Yes. Flanagan
can play forward, and just
about anything else he wishes,
too.
The 1974 edition of Georgia
baseball was unveiled in Val
dosta. Georgia, last Wednesday
and the results revealed twin
victories for the Dogs Georgia
combined strong pitching per
formances with timely hitting
to gain a 3-2 win over Bowling
Green and then proceeded to
hand Valdosta a 3-1 setback in
the second half of the twin
bill
Jim Mitchell got the starting
nod for the Georgia debut and
proceeded to hurl a no-hitter
until the sixth inning when
Bowling Green s Gary Hoss
w as credited w ith a check-
swing infield hit Mitchell was
relieved in the seventh by Bill
Winchester after Bow ling Green
had tied the score via a
two-run homer Winchester
then held the Falcons scoreless
for the final two innings to gain
the win.
Georgia scored in the first
inning of Wednesday’s encoun
ter after Mark Saber singled
and moved to second following
a walk to Steve Carp Georgia
captain Billy Griffith followed
with a base hit to give the
Dogs a 1-0 lead Sparky Wilson
increased the Georgia lead to
2-0 in the Dogs' half of the
second by sending a shot over
the left field wall. Wilson’s
leadoff homer, however, was
the only Georgia hit until the
eighth inning
MITCHELL’S no hit bid was
foiled in the sixth after Dave
Fox reached on an error and
Gary Hoss reached on a two-
out infield single Mitchell then
walked Dave Wellman to load
the bases for Bowling Green.
After a short conference with
Bulldog Coach Jim Whatley,
Mitchell ended the threat by
getting Dick Selgo to fly out,
leaving three on base
Bowling Green sent the game

The Dogs jumped out to a

to third on O’Conner’s hit. then
scored on a wild pitch.
Valdosta cut the Georgia
