LISBON (UPI) — Alvaro
Cunhal, white-haired leader of
Portugal’s formerly outlawed
Communist party, returned
home Tuesday to a hero’s wel
come from 14 years in exile
and told the Portuguese people
to support the army in “ending
fascism.”
“The people should be with
the army and help it achieve
peace and democracy,” Cunhal
told a crowd of about 5 000
cheering Communist support
ers massed outside Lisbon’s
airport with handmade red
flags and slogans.
He voiced hope that mass
May Day demonstrations au
thorized by the new ruling
military junta Wednesday will
show the people’s solidarity
but that they also will be
peaceful.
The country’s left-wing par
ties and labor unions, freed
from the restraints of right-
wing dictatorship, ordered mil
lions of workers out onto the
streets Wednesday for the first
mass May Day demonstrations
in more than 46 years.
Cunhal was the second exiled
former political leader to re
turn home since last week’s
armed forces revolution He
was preceded Sunday by Soci
alist party chief Mario Soares,
who was one of the large
welcoming delegation at the
airport to meet him.
A spokesman for the military
junta promised today to name
a premier and establish a
civilian government “as soon
as possible.”
