A drained
Ever change the water in a
fish bowl? Simple, huh’ Try a
step up to something a little
larger. Maybe a large aquari
um. Or maybe a 40 acre pond.
The pond, fed by a nice-sized
creek, must be drained every
four or five years, primarily to
thin out the larger fish The
lock is opened slowly and the
pond is drained over a couple f
days instead of rapidly. This
allows the fish to follow the
water level down to the half
acre or so left covered when
the draining is down. Otherwise
a quantity of the fish might be
stranded in the mud
After the level has reached a
minimum point, friends, rela
tives and neighbors help to
walk nets through the small
area. Kids catch good-sized
fish merely by gently slipping
their hands into the water and
grasping the creatures
Most of the catch is sold
The quantity of fish in the
reduced area is so compacted
that few have a sporting
chance And the big ones don't
get away, this time.
The lock gate is closed and
the creek starts the long, slow
process of recovering the 40
acres of mud and twisted,
rotted stumps, left from a time
before the pond's existance

Georgia had a great recruit
mg year in basketball I think
Coach John Guthrie and his
assistant Butch Chiton went
out last spring and signed
three All American and five
All Southern high school bas
ketball players
They got height in Savan
nah's Lucius Foster and l*a-
(• range’s Ken Boatwright
They got high scoring, tough
rclmunding and quick forwards
in Jackie Dorsey and Charlie
Dorsey They got smart, good
shooting team leaders in An
thony Flanagan, (ireg Keith
and Key in Keever
(iuthrie is to be commended
1 lor his efforts. It's nice to know
that the head basketball coach
is sincere and caret about his
team and his school, unlike his
predecessor (iuthrie is build
ing what might be a power
house in a few years The only
thing that worries me is that
people are going to expect too
much this year.
TIIKHKS BK.KN an awful
lot of talk about the recruits
* Maybe too much talk What
people forget is that they are
I only recruits Untested and
unproven against college com
petition. They could fall flat on
their collective fact's In fact
that's more likely to happen
l than anything else What then?
Exactly what kind of basket
ball team are the Georgia
Bulldogs going to have this
winter
In 1977. I've got a hunch
they're going to Ik* great But
in 1974. I don't think they’re
going to be so great In fact. I
don’t even think they're going
to he any good at all
It will take a lot of John
(iuthrie enthusiasm, a lot of
hustle and a lot of vocal
support to get the Dogs near
500 this season
Outside of all that freshman
talent coming in this fall, the
'Dogs really only have two
college level basketball players
on the team
BII.IA MAGAHITY of Phila
delphia is the team's only
viable offensive threat He’s
capable of shooting a team out
of a zone and he's an adequate
one-on one player He's not the
greatest rebounder or defender
in the world, but he can play
offense, so he'll be an asset to
the club
James Johnson ol Savannah
may be the only player from
last year’s team who will still
lie a regular in the 1975-76
season He made a lot of
treshman mistakes last year,
but at times he showed signs of
being able to play some credit
able defense At a muscular
6 6. Johnson has above avera
ging leaping ability, but he's
short for a center nonetheless
He hustles and he's not afraid
to go into a crowd for a
rebound He's not much on
offense but he’s not afraid to
shoot and he could develop in
time
After that, the ranks get sort
of thin
Ed Peterson once had the
potential to be a great offen
sive player. He shot with
incredible accuracy and he
could get himself open for the
shot. Peterson though, has
spent too much unproductive

The river It's dirty, it’s
clean, it's deep, shallow, nar
row. wide, cold. warm, rapid
and calm It's dark and sinis
ter. and it's bright and friend
ly It empties into gulfs and it
starts out at lakes There are
thousands of rivers
The river beats people to
death and provides people with
their fondest memories
Most of all though, the river
is back to nature I mean, the
earth and the sun are there
every day They 're taken for
granted But rivers aren't You
can walk outside and there's
the sun and the earth and the
rain and the sky and the trees
But most people can t just
walk outside - and there s the
river
You have to travel some to
time at Georgia He sat out a
year and played on a team last
season in which his style didn’t
fit in Last year Georgia need
ed relKiunds. not 20 and 25 foot
jumpers. Unfortunately, Peter
son specialized in the jumpers.
Steve Waxman shared the
see the river. That’s what
makes it special, makes you
appreciate it You can’t take
the river for granted.
A lot of times, people ride
down the river They get rafts
and inner-tubes and any other
paraphenalia that will float,
and they ride down it.
That's fun. I guess, but it
seems like a lot of trouble To
ride down the river, you have
to go through certain rituals
First, you have to get nine
tires inflated and then you
have to patch up three leaks
Next, you have to buy three
cases of beer and try to cram
them into one cooler with a
half a bag of ice. You then
drive four different cars to
three different sites and try to
remember who's got which
keys Finally, you have to
center duties with Johnson last
season and performed admira
bly He scored a few big points
and got a few big rebounds last
year, but his quickness is a
liability.
THE BEST thing that could
figure a way to tie the cooler
down so that it doesn’t go
floating away.
Those are just the prepara
tions, though. Once you get on
the river, you have to deal with
a lot of people whose faces you
wish you'd never seen. You
have to reel in the beer every
five minutes, and you have
always have to make a big
effort to keep the cigarettes
and the matches dry. You also
have to make embarassing and
awkward pit stops. By the time
you finish four hours of beer,
sun and rocking on the rapids
you’re wasted
You climb out of the river a
beaten man You don't even
want to think about the night to
come.
You had fun You really did.
But that’s not back to nature
happen to Tim Goski and
David Lucey would be if An
thony Flanagan decided to
play football Otherwise, they’ll
have to battle each other and
maybe Keith and Keever too
for the remaining guard posi
tion.
natural
There's only one way to get
back to nature on the river.
You have to have a friend who
owns a house 20 miles outside
of the city that's within spitting
distance of the river (It's
important that the house be
near the city. That way you
can think about how ironic it is
that the mad bustle of the city
is only a short distance from
all the peacefullness you are
experiencing. I
You then take three or four
styrofoam lounge chairs out
into the middle of the river
where it's only about two feet
deep Then you sit. And sit.
And sit Your feet are in the
water, beer is at hand and
friends are close by. The
hassles of life seem to disap
pear
That's the river at its best
Rafting fun, but relaxing
