lose to somebody else to finish
third in the league.
The Bayou Bengals will be
vicious on defense as usual.
Returning for the Tigers are
two of the best defensive line
men in college football in Steve
Cassidy and Adam Duhe. The
rest of the defense is well-
stocked with returning starters
such as Robert Dow, Mike
Williams and Bo Harris. Dow
also doubles as LSU’s kickoff
and return man. He contri
buted 401 yards in return
yardage last year to the Tiger
cause and according to head
coach Charlie McClendon he is
a good bet to better that figure
this year.
On offense, LSU is solid but
not spectacular. Brad Davis
and Terry Robiskie return to
run the ball and Brad Boyd
and Ben Jones are back to
catch it. Their only question is
wo is going to hand it off and
throw it.
Mike Miley played quarter
back last year and has another
year of eligibility left, but he is
reportedly considering a major
league baseball offer and may
not play this year. The other
candidates are inexperienced
Billy Broussard and Carl Trim
ble.
The only sure thing about
LSU is that they’ll devour
Tulane this year.
TENNESSEE
Tennessee will finish high in
the SEC standing out of habit if
nothing else. The Vols don’t
have the talent on this year’s
club that they normally do, but
they have (ondredge Holloway
and he can win seven or eight
games all by himself .
The Vols will be running out
of the “veer” this year with
Haul ('arealhers trying to pick
up where Haskell Stanback left
Holloway of Tennessee
oil last year. The rest of the
Vol offense is unimpressive
witli the exception of lineman
Mickey Marvin who should
make All-American this year.
Tennessee also has a lightning
IniII for a wide receiver named
Stanley Morgan, but his ability
to catch passes is still in doubt.
The Tennessee defense is in
(even worse shape. There isn’t
» much size and there is even
Hess talent. Head coach Bill
Battle is only set on a few
positions apparently just hop
ing that some undiscovered tal-
. enl will surface in the fall.
Fortunately for the Vols.
there is a ( ondredge Holloway
and at this point he is an
excellent candidate for the
lleisman Trophy He’ll keep
Tennessee in the thick of
things all year.
KKNTITKY
Adolph Hupp has been off the
Kentucky campus for two lull
years now and the toot bull
program is starling to show il.

There are over 1500 men,
women and children playing
softball this summer in con
junction with the Athens Parks
and Recreation Department.
University students, Athens
residents and people from as
far away as Commerce and
Bogart converge on the softball
fields at Memorial Park and
the intramurals fields four
couple oT big upsets last year
including a 12-7 win over
Georgia.
The Wildcats also have the
finest running back in the
conference in Sonny Collins
and another good one in Steve
Campassi They have a pro
mising young quarterback in
Mike Fanuzzi and a whole host
of talented incoming freshmen.
CeUtas if Retticky
A lot of people didn’t exactly
get along with head coach
Fran C'urci when he was at
Miami, but Kentucky seems to
be more to his liking. He had
the best recruiting year of any
of the conference teams, and a
lot of his recruits are going to
see action this year, particu
larly on defense where the
Wildcats will have some
trouble.
Kentucky lost eight starters
off of their defense. The only
proven football player remain
ing is Tom Ehlers, a lineback
er and a hard hitter. Curci will
have to build around him with
some of his talented freshmen
if he hopes to repeat or better
last year’s performance.
Things are looking up though
for football in Lexington and
with Sonny Collins and Steve
Campassi around to run the
ball, the Wildcats will win a
few games.
FLORIDA
Every year Florida looks
great on paper but always
seems to end up .1-7 or some
thing like that This year might
Ik* different though, because
the Gators have come up with
a real live quarterback who
may turn out to be the best
they’ve had there since Steve
Spurrier whistled passes
around the Gator Bowl in the
middle sixties.
Don Gaffney is the quarter-
tanks name and Georgia Ians
should remember him well. He
single-handedly beat the ’Dogs
1110 m last year’s Georgia-
Florida contest
It's hard to tell how much
help Gaffney will gel from the
rest of the offensive unit
though. They lost Nat Moore
and Vince Kendrick in the
hackficld. James Richards
looks like their best running
back and Lee McGriff is their
best receiver. All he’ll have to
do this year to be effective is
have good hands because
Gaffney will gel it to him.
There may be something a
Ini unusual about Florida’s
defense this year. It may be
good
Ralph Ortega is the leader,
lie s linebacker and he's only a
step behind Alabama's Wood-
row lame. Glenn Cameron, a
high school teammate of Orte
ga s is also a Gator linebacker
and is very tough. Preston
nights a week to participate in
America's favorite summer
sport.
According to Marvin Russell,
sports coordinator of the Parks
and Recreation Department,
there are 76 organized team*
competing in four different
leagues The largest league is
the Church League “Almost
all of the local churches have
teams,’’ Russell explained
Kendrick, little brother of
Vince is mean and lean in the
middle of the line. Sammy
“Odd Job" Green plays next to
Kendrick and if they can
combine to stop the run, the
Gators will be solid
If Gaffney can have a year
like the November he had last
season, the Gators will be
tough.
AUBURN
Auburn has always mixed
basic fundamentals, good exe
cution, smart football and a
sound defense to win football
games. Two years ago they
worked that formula to perfec
tion losing only once all year.
Last year it didn't work as well
and this year it may not work
at all.
The problem it seems is that
there is less and less talent on
the plains every year.
The defense will be solid
enough with Mike Flynn, Ken
Bernicli and Ernie Dangeans
leading the way. It will help a
lot that the defense unquestion
ably plays the best fundamen
tal football in the league.
On offense though, unimpres
sive Chris Vacarella will run
Aulnirn’s new veer attack.
Speedy Sedrick McIntyre will
be the big gun out of the back-
field. but he is still unproven.
Last year's flash in the War
Eagle backfield, Mitzi Jackson
is back, but with a knee
recovering from surgery. Tom
Gossom is one the flank with
good speed and good hands,
but Vacarella probably can’t
throw Hie ball as far as
Gossom can run.
Auburn looks like a struggler
this year, but they'll probably
win five nr six games just
because they have such a good
coach.
MISSISSIPPI
When John Vaught took over
the Ole Miss head coaching job
toward the end of last season,
the Rebels started showing
signs of productivity. They
haltered Tennessee just as
badly as Alabama had earlier
in the year.
Kimbrough of Ole Miss
This year, however. Ken
Cooper. a former Georgia as
sistant. is the head coach, and
I tow well the Johnny Rebs will
perform for him is the big
quest ion. They seem to play
well only when the mood hits
litem. When they came into
Athens last year and got
embarrassed 20-0. they looked
worse Ilian any college football
leant I had ever seen play
Thai's the peculiar thing
altoui Ole Miss, they always
haveialent and this year is no
In addition to the Church
League, there is the Ladies'
League, the Industrial League
and the Independent League
Most University students and
faculty participate in the Inde
pendent League, according to
Russell
"As with anything in Athens,
the University of Georgia plays
an integral part, and this is
true of our softball program. "
Russell said Teams comprised
exception, it is just a matter of
them deciding on a week to
week basis whether or not they
want to plav.
On oflense. Kenny Lyons has
been brilliant at times and
dismal at other times When
he’s brilliant, the Rebs can
play with anvone.
In the backfield. Larry Kra
mer and James Reed return to
give them a solid running
attack Rick Kimbrough at
wide receiver is the best pass
catcher in the conference and
if Lyons is humming, the Rebel
passing game is very danger
ous.
The defense is average. They
have seven starters fiom last
year’s mediocre defense re
turning No one is particularly
outstanding. Unfortunately for
Cooper, they’ll give up a lot of
points. The only way Mississip
pi will beat anybody this year
is by outscoring them. And
that isn’t always the best way.
VANDERBILT
Steve Sloan is a fine coach
and an excellent recruiter. He
deserves better than Vander
bilt He deserves to coach at a
school where at least some
body cares about football.
In 1969 when Vanderbilt beat
Alabama, they said it turned
their season around. In 1973,
when Vandy beat Georgia on
homecoming day they said it
turned their program around.
That remains to be seen, but if
anyone can do it. Sloan can.
This season though, won’t be
the biggie for the Commo
dores They have an adequate
quarterback in Fred Fisher
and a good receiver and run
ner in Jamie O'Rourke. They
have a couple of burners in
Jesse Mathers and W'alter
Overton, but they have yet to
prove themselves.
On defense there isn’t much
to cheer about either. The
Commodores do a lot of gang
tackling but that is only be
cause they don’t have anybody
big enough to do it alone
Tackle Mickey Jacobs at 225
may be the best defensive
player on the team. He learned
a lot playing last year next to
Mark Ilgenfritz who is now
with the Cleveland Browns.
The word on Vanderbilt is
time and patience. 1 hope
Steve Sloan has plenty of both.
MISSISSIPPI STATE
Mississippi State has the
great misfortune of playing the
toughest conference schedule
in the league. They probably
are a belter team than both
Vanderbilt and Kentucky, but
they won’t have the opportuni
ty to prove it
They have a good quarter
back in Rocky Felker and a
potential All-American on de
fense in James Webb.
Then coach. Jim Tyler,
probably has more determina
tion to win than any other
coach in the league He instills
that altitude into his football
players It s too bad that the
schedule and everything else is
going against the other Bull
dogs Someday Tyler is going
to bring a winner to Starkville.

Pennant race like last ;
Oakland, Reds in control
By MIKE BLUM
Contrary to popular opinion,
I’m not dead. Yet.
As the major league pennant
races grind through the sum
mer months, the distinct sense
of deja vu permeates the
proceedings. A few teams have
changed positions, but all
things considered, there aren’t
many difference between the
standings now and those at a
similar time last year.
Just as last year, there
remains only one certainty,
other than the San Diego
Padres annual cellar-dwelling
finish — the Oakland A’s will
be involved in post-season com
petition for the fourth straight
year.
With a lead that is approach
ing ten games, the bickering
behemoths of baseball (i.e., the
A’s) are on the verge of
leaving their struggling compe
titors (Chicago, Kansas City
and Texas) to resign themsel
ves to a squabble for second
place.
All this despite injuries to no
less than five Oakland straters,
and sub-par years from a few
others. Manager Alvin Dark
has insured the A’s success
with his grovelling antics in
the face of pressure by owner
Charles O. Finley, which have
further aggravated the already
testy Oakland players. And the
madder they are, the better
they play, something they have
long since proven to be incon
testable, as an Impeachment
Committee member might pon
tificate
Elsewhere, things are not so
cut and dried. The Dodgers
appear to be in the first stages
of pulling another el foldo act,
and the Reds are once again
arming for a late season blitz
should Los Angeles falter The
only thing standing between a
repeat of another Dodger flop
is the tireless right arm of
reliever Mike Marshall, well
on his way to appearing in
over 100 games out of the
bullpen
Despite my fervant aversion
to the Big Red Maching (the
term sounds to me like a
conservative columnist’s de
scription of the Soviet Union's
government 1. I grudgingly con
cede their standing as perhaps
the finest team in the game at
the moment. Their pitching is
not as bad as most would lead
you to believe, and their of
fense featuring such potent
bats as Bench, Morgan, Perez
and sports’s most overrated,
non-superstar — Pete Rose —
is second to none. Under the
leadership of baseball’s resi
dent reactionary, Sparky -
Anderson, the Reds seem on
the verge of mounting their
second successive comeback
effort, resulting in another
divisional championship.
The N.L. East title is patient
ly waiting for someone to lay
claim to it, but the six teams in
teh division are as reluctant to
take charge as Ron Ziegler is
to talk about impeachment.
Philadelphia is making do
with roughly half a team
(Carlton, Lonborg, Dave Cash,
Larry Bowa and MVP candi
date Mike Schmidt) but has
yet to prove that they are
capable of withstanding pen
nant pressure. The ghost of the
memorable Philly Phlop of
1964 may still linger, if not
with the players, then certainly
with the fans and the press
The Cardinals have bats to
spare Reggie Smith, Joe Torre,
Ted Simmons and the amazing
Lou Brock, who should eclipse
Maury Wills’ single season
base stealing record of 104. As
the age of 35 no iess), but the
starting pitching is only de
grees better than that of the
1973 Braves.
Pittsburgh is almost certain
ly the best team in the division,
but have shown absolutely no
inclination to play up to their
ability since the death of
Robert Clemente If they get
serious any time between now
and Labor Day, first place is
theirs for the taking Then
there is always (perish the
thought) the New York Mets.
As bad as they're going now, a
500 record could easily win the
division, and no team is in
such bad shape that .500 is
unattainable.
The A.L. East is in a similar
position, but the quality is
more apparent. Like Oakland,
the Red Sox have withstood a
high number of injuries to
front line players and remain
ed on top Boston’s pitching is
in bad shape, but every time
th»- Sox hit a skid, other
division contenders follow suit.

Indians pennant hopes have
received a severe setback, but
Cleveland has the offense to
stay in contention if the pitch
ing holds up. Like the Phillies,
it remains to be seen if the
youth-laden Indians can main
tain their equilibrium down the
stretch.
As with Pittsburgh, everyone
keeps waiting for Baltimore to
break out of the pack, but the
O’s of 1974 are in no way equal
to the team that won four
divisional titles in the last five
years. Nevertheless, the Birds
cannot be counted out.
As a matter of fact, no team
in the East is completely out of
contention, with the possible
exception of pitching-poor Mil
waukee Even the New York
Yankees (remember them?)
have a shot at a title
Other than the American
League West, baseball fans
could be in for three down-to-
the wire pennant chases, an
increase of two over recent
seasons
It the NFL players remain
on strike (which seems unlike
ly), sports fans may be talking
about Jimmy Wynn and Carl
Yastrzemski instead of Broad
way Joe Willie and Farcical
Frank and Humble Howie come
September.
And maybe that’s not a bad
idea.
