With new staff taking over today, 1 thought it would be a good
time to discuss the highlight of my term, sportswise I'm really
not too concerned about what happened out of the realm of
sports Oh yeah, I do know there is a bunch of controversy going
on at the library right now Something about a report. I hear
People have accused me 01 not being as interested enough in
topics other than sports They say all I read in a newspaper is
the sports page But that's not true, 1 do read Lewis Grizzard's
column on the City-State page
It’s not that 1 don't think "hard news" is important It is It's
just that sports have always been my first love Some of the most
exciting times in my life have occurred at sporting events One of
the most thrilling moments I've experienced happened over
Christmas And it came courtesy of the Georgia basketball team
If you've read any articles I've written this quarter, you
probably know what I'm leading up to That's right, I'm talking
about Georgia knocking off Louisville at the Louisville Christmas
tournament
Since that game, (which Georgia won in overtime against the
then No 7 Cardinals). I haven't been able to forget about it
I hope I never do
For that reason, in nearly every feature article I have written
on basketball, the Louisville game has been mentioned And
mentioned and mentioned.
The people who set the copy for The Ked and Rlack can't
understand my fascination with Louisville They say they've
typed the word Louisville so many times that now they're doing
it in their sleep On top of that, they claim they won't type the
word Louisville anymore I wonder who typed this
But Louisville is plainly, for better or worse, an obsession with
me It's deep seated and incurable Before Georgia beat
Louisville. I thought about that town about as often as I do
geology That is, never But it's different now
Now when I hear the name Louisville, I stop and take notice
For instance. I never knew Ali was from Louisville, until it was
announced before the Spinks fight I bet I'd heard it mentioned
in the papers a million times But that was before Walter Daniels
played at Louisville's Freedom Hall
l am taking a course in Contemporary American Newspapers
this quarter Aside from learning (for about the 18th time, I
might add i that Gutenberg invented the movable type, I also
discovered that two Louisville papers are among the best in the
south
Whenever I hit a part in the text about those Louisville papers.
I'd stop and meditate for a minute I'd think back to how I felt
when Georgia, an underdog if there ever was one, came up and
beat Louisville Before that tournament. Georgia was the Kodney
Dangerfield of basketball they just couldn't get any respect
After they won. they were like Luke Skywalker
Scientists say most people only use a fraction ol their potential
brainpower I m sure l m guilty of that too But I wasn't in
Louisville It's funny, but I've replayed, play by play, what

happened in that game hundreds of times I really don't think I
have concentrated any harder in my life than I did during the
Louisville game Since classes weren't in session at that time. I
didn't have to worry about writing a game story that night Thus.
1 was sitting next to Happy Howard, the Georgia broadcaster,
and trying to keep the statistics on team rebounds and turnovers
for him I remember 1 was pretty accurate in the first half When
the official stats came out at the half. I was only one or two off
on each category
But as the action got tense in the second half, my mind forgot
about the statistics I didn't do that on purpose; I was just too
caught up in the game to pay attention to numbers
During the game. Happy would look over at my stats and read
them on the air tie did that a lot in the first half
In the second hall, he took one glance at them and knew I
hadn't been paying attention They were way off For instance,
midway through the second half. I had Georgia down for about
three rebounds They really had about 10 at that time. I later
learned
But Happy lives up to his name He didn't take his microphone
cord and strangle me with it. He understood He also understood
when he got hit with a Coke can later in the game It didn't
bother him. he just kept on announcing
Happy was like Clint Eastwood in the movie we d seen just that
afternoon Called The Gauntlet, the story line went something
like this; Eastwood was in a bus and he was determined to get
through blocks of armed policemen who were intent on killing
him Eastwood was trying to get to police headquarters to expose
the crooked police chief for what he was Of course, in a
programmer like that good ol Clint made it And Happy loved
every minute of it. loafer that night. Happy was Clint Eastwood
reincarnated He refused to let anything stop him from
announcing, and he was screaming for most of the game That's
not a wise thing to do in front of 16.000 Louisville fans, he found
out Happy was so happy with the way Georgia was playing that
he had a lapse in judgment: he let me talk on the air I yelled
something incoherent into the mike He never offered it to me
again Experience is a best teacher. I guess
My total fascination with Louisville will. I hope, never end I'll
always say Georgia has never played better ball. Maybe they
have since, but I won't ever admit it.
After that Kentucky game. Georgia coach John Guthrie
mentioned Louisville in his post-game comments He said his
team probably played as well against the Wildcats as they did
against Louisville
What 9 How dare he take the name of Louisville in vain like
that” Doesn't he have any respect 9
But maybe he should be forgiven for that slip
It has been a long season for him and maybe the luster of the
win over Louisville has been erased some Or maybe they did
play as well against Kentucky Who can sav 9
But Guthrie still shouldn't have compared any game to the
Louisville game Even if that comparison might have been true

Pybum wears ‘two hats’
Braves news
B\ l>\\ III WESTIN
SPORTS EDITOR
Jeff Pybum just doesn't look
right in a baseball uniform
First. Pybum, last year's
first string quarterback for the
Bulldogs, doesn't wear no. 7
like he does in football He
wears 24
He doesn't wear a facemask
or any pads either And the
people he throws the ball to
are named Kaizer and Clatter
buck. not Arnold and
Norris
Pyburn is one of those
unusual college athetes who is
gifted enough to play two
sports So there he was last
Saturday and Sunday, at Foley
field with the rest of this year’s
baseball edition
But aside from looking out of
place in a baseball uniform.
Pvburn looked out of place for
another reason
He was sitting on the bench
And he's healths
Presently. Pyburn s role on
the team is as a backup
centerfielder and pinchitter In
Saturday and Sunday's games,
you could sas Pybum proved
he is on the team because of
his skill in that sport, not
because he is the Bulldog
quarterback
In Saturday's first game of a
twinbill against Tennessee
Temple. Pyburn was two for
two with a single, stolen base
and then a double on his next
trip Georgia won that contest
an.
In the nightcap. Pyburn did
something no other player
could manage to do in the two
games combined; he smacked
a home run Georgia also won
that game, though it was
ilightl)i closer. 13 ;>
In Sunday's douhleheader
against Columbus College.
Pyburn only saw one at bat
He stroked a single down the
third base line in the first
game He didn't play in the
second game That makes the
Athens native tour lor four for

Pvbuin leaves Ihr baltei 'x box aftei anuthei hit
the season and gives him a
crisp batting average of l mm.
Not too bad for a bench-
warmer
Pyburn isn’t upset that he’s
currently keeping a space
warm on the bench. He wants
to play but he's letting time to
run its course. It's still early in
the season And he is a little
rusty.
•It's kinda hard to say how
much playing time I should
get.'' he said in between games
Sunday "I'm just getting out
here after my knee injury and
I'm trying to get back in the
groove after being out of
baseball for the past two
years."
The knee injury Pyburn
mentioned was the right knee
that he injured in the Florida
football game last season It
happened when he stepped in a
drainage ditch on the sidelines
He says it's still not at full
efficiency.
it s getting a lot better
•very day." he said i had a
ittle problem with it earlier. I
had a little swelling I think I
was trying to do a little too
much too quick on it and l had
to ease off of it for a while But
now it's getting stronger and
I'm kicking the weights with
it "
With his knee improving, he
will In* ready lor full time duty
in centerfield soon But he’s
not saying he should be playing
ahead of Gil Mende and Brad
Pager
i think how much I play is
determined by how well I can
play, you know, and how well
the coaches see I can fit in
their scheme ol ballplaying."
Pyburn said he wasn't
expecting to hit a home run in
only his third at bat of the
year But he still wasn't totally
shocked by that round-tripper
*i guess it was kind of a
surprise Hut I feel like I can
hit the ball out of the ballpark
here The guy just threw me a
good pitch It was a little bit of
a surprise to hit one this early
in the season but it was a
pleasure to do it."
On the topic of his football
playing. Pyburn will "try to
make half of the spring
training, if possible " That
training begins March 27 What
Pyburn is trying-hoping to do
is. •‘work in some of both
baseball and football this
spring "
Pyburn has very definite
reasons why he enjoys playing
football and baseball The two
reasons are at polar opposites.
"I like football for the
excitement ol Saturday after
noon." he said. "There’s
nothing quite like it. but in
baseball its kind of an
individual sport. I enjoy the
competition of just you and the
pitcher."
What Pyburn didn't mention
was that unlike lootball at
Georgia, baseball games don't
draw 50.000 people a game.
The average is more like 250
people And that's including
those with the spirits behind
the out held fences
Still discussing football. Py-
born doesn't take it for granted
that he has the No I
quarterback position sewed up
going into the season Far
from it. he says
"I don't think anybody ever
has a position locked up You
always have to fight lor what
you get You always have to
step out there each time and
do your best and there's no
such thing as having a position
locked up
With the football Bulldogs.
Pyburn didn't get much of a
chance to go for the " home
run" ball very much The team
stayed predominately on the
ground When he steps up to
the plate in baseball, however,
it's a different story
"I ni basically a more ol a
power hitter." he said "I'm
not a slap hitter I usually take
a pretty long cut at the ball
and don't try to ping it too
much ”
In football. Pyburn plays the
glamour position: quarterback.
The attention is always focused
on him. It's ironic that in
baseball Pyburn plays one of
the least glamourous positions,
centerfield
••I've played a lot of
positions in baseball." he said.
In Little League I was a
catcher. I was a shortstop in
high school and a centerfielder
on my Legion team. I've
played just about everywhere
on the field but I teel at home
in centerfield and it's probably
my best position "
Pyburn and the baseball
team will be in action on the
honielront this weekend, as the
meet Shorter College at Foley
Field Saturday The first pilch
will In* thrown at :t p in

‘Before my life
really befcan..."
J
1 was a dreamer My life revolved
around desires to "have it made" and
do it my way I was rebellious, proud,
impulsive, naive, but most of all I was
deceived in thinking I could live my
own life my own way and still have
eternal life in heaven I believed that
Jesus was Savior, God s Son, and l.ord
(but not minei All 1 wanted was to I
escape hell the easy way out and still
live my own life—“He who has found
his own life shall lose it, and he who
has lost his life for My sake shall find
il" Matthew 10:39
I did not find a fulfilling and continuing joy in my life and tried various avenues to satisfy
the increasing hunger within me for "something more meaningful" I grew depressed and
In frustration, bitterness, and loneliness I tried to commit suicide It was during this time
that I realized I really didn't know Jesus personally I knew about Him, but that was it I
decided to commit myself to follow Him 100 percent I removed the obstacles in the way
such as drugs and dating He saved me by His grace and my faith I soon knew what it
meant to have real joy and peace of mind
I came to Athens one month later and because I could not find other Christians who were
totally sold out to God I grew weaker in my walk and fell into sin I turned away from this
sin later and was (orgiven, but my heart still ached for committed believers; I prayed God
would send some believers to Athens who were walking in His Spirit and a year later in
June of 1977 my prayer was answered when I came to Maranatha Chapel Since then I have
learned what it means to lay your life down for Jesus as well as (or each other and the
importance of committing yourself luu percent to the Lord and to the body of believers
Jesus is Lord at Maranatha and our relationship with Him is what is taught and applied
flow I can say like Paul that "I am not ashamed of the gospel it is the POWER of salvation
to every one who believes .<Homans 1 16.1
