Harrison album contains little preaching
Ry Ingrid Schorr
The new George Harrison
album is the first to be called
simply George Harrison. After
listening to it (not without
some apprehension), I believe
the title is very fitting Without
having to lean on anything but
his own talent, it appears that
Harrison has overcome his
tendencies to get bogged down
in religion and malevolence,
and has finally turned out a
good album
I've always been an ardent
admirer of Harrison, but I quit
buying his albums after Living
the Material World, and I
practically quit listening to
them after Dark Horse. This
new album has won me back.
The preaching is sparse and
dealt out more gently than in
previous albums-cum -sermons
like 33 1-3.
Harrison only tries to be
funny in one song; maybe
someday he'll realize that he

was funnier when he was the
"surly Beatle.” All things
considered, this is the first
Harrison album since All
Things Must Hass in which the
good outweighs the bad.
Although he occasionally
lapses into cliches ("It never
rains but it pours") the lyrics
are quite good “Blow Away."
the single, is particularly
poignant It is flooded with
shiny images of rainbows,
breezes and song.
One of the best on the album.
"Blow Away." has a plaintive
beginning "Day turned black,
sky ripped apart"—that effort
lessly turns to clear skies,
warmth and love..."AH it's got
to take is some warmth to
make it blow awa>
"Love Comes to Everyone"
is in a vein very similar to
"Blow Away, although a little
less ebullient Featuring a
guitar introduction by Eric
Clapton, "Love Comes to
Everyone" is very close to
Clapton's own style Clapton
makes his first real appear
ance on a Harrison album
since All Things Must l»ass
Harrison includes what
we've come to expect from
him after nine solo albums:
the not-so-subtle stab at the
Beatles. On Kxira Texture it
was "This Guitar (Can't Keep
from Cryin’)." On Material
World it was "Sue Me Sue You
Blues ’ Now we are presented
with Here Comes the Moon ."
It is dreary, repetitive and
empty
If Harrison is still bitter
about being a member of the
greatest group of all time, he
isn't helping his career as a
solo artist one bit by writing
such dismal songs and refer
ring to the Beatles at the same
time Such Harrison master
pieces as "Something." "For
You Blue, and Here Comes
the Moon" suffer badly by
comparison
Much of the album's merit
comes from the impeccable
playing of Harrison’s band.
Harrison uses most of his
regular musicians: Willie
Weeks on bass. Anky New-
mark on drums and Gary
Wright on keyboards
As a whole, the album is
remarkably and cohesively
light in tone No sermons, no
diatribes on how he was
screwed by the Beatles or their
lawyers, no attempts to save
emerging African nations. In
fact, in "Not Guilty." Harrison
says "I'm really sorry you’re
underfed—but like you heard
me said—Not guilty " Refer
ring to his endless legal
troubles. No use handing me
a writ—while I’m trying to do
my bit
Production has always
played a role in the success or
failure of a Harrison album.
All Things Must Pass and
Concert for Bangladesh, his
most critically acclaimed
works, were coproduced by

seems lo be what makes Ihis
new album the best of the
recent crop
Harrison's most fervent fans
claim he is the world's
grealest guitarist. I'm not sure
I buy that, but he is indeed
superior Never one for show
ing off. Harrison has always
specialized in a sweet, some
times painful slide guitar that
is most stunning on songs like
"My Swel Lord," "I'd Have
You Anytime." and "Give Me
Love "
His guitar work throughout
the album is as usual,
unobtrusively magnificent
Harrison s new album has all
the qualities of his best work:
near-perfect musicianship,
skilled production, sensitive
lyrics, and Harrison's voice is
once again as good as before
the disastrous 1974 tour.
Hopefully. Harrison is back
on his feet
