Nuclear plant continues to leak radiation
HARRISBURG, Pa (L'PI>—Power plant
officials today said radiation still was leaking
from Three Mile Island nuclear station and
that additional radiation has been detected off
the island as far as 20 miles away
A U S. congressional delegation headed for
the site to learn more about potential danges to
residents of the rural area
• We've identified some sources of additional
radiation being detected on the island and off
the island." said John Herbein, vice president
of Metropolitan Edison Co., part owner of the
facility The additional radiation apparently
was coming from an auxiliary facility designed
to hold excessive reactor coolants that became
contaminated in Wednesdays accident.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said
this morning that higher levels of radiation
were detected as far as 20 miles away.
L’ S Rep Allen Ertel. D-Pa . who represents
the citizens living around the power plant
where Wednesday's accident occurred, criti
cized the NRC for not responding adequately to
safety questions about the plant in a letter to
him dated a week before the mishap
“I wanted to know if there should have been
new safety procedures in place in light of a
combination of things, including the Lewis
report." said Ertel. referring to a new study
that questioned assumptions contained in the
Rasmussen Report which held that nuclear
energy was safe and sound
Ertel. who was flying to the site by helicopter
from the Pentagon along with Sens Richard
Schweiker R Pa . H John Heinz III. R Pa .
and Gary Hart. D-Colo . said he was concerned
about safety at Three Mile Island in light of the
l^ewis report and a recent recommendation by
the Union of Concerned Scientists that the
facilty and 15 othrs be closed
“Until things are resolved. I have a concern
for the safety of the people." said Ertel.
explaining that he wanted to inspect the site to
judge the possible harmful effects of radiation
leakage on the public
The Three Mile Island accident was
described by the NRC as being one of the worst
ever in the United States
