Author-illustrator speaks
By PAM WILLIAMS
Staff writer
People in the South are more creative and
imaginative, and for that reason, “you should
grow up in the South, said Maurice Sendak,
author and illustrator, during an informal
lecture at the University Thursday.
The well known author and illustrator of
children’s books was in Athens last Wednesday
and Thursday to conduct workshops in the
Department of Art and the College of
Education
At the lecture Thursday. Sendak. with coke in
hand, conversed with the enthusiastic
audience, rather than lecturing to them
The author and illustrator talked of the
children s picture book he finished before
coming to Georgia from his Connecticut home
It took Sendak two years to complete his
latest book which is still untitled and is under
200 words in length
During the lecture, Sendak described some of
the research involved in writing his book He
took a trip to Germany because the main
character in the book is a German girl named
Ida and he also made a trip to the Metropolitan
Museum of Art in New York to study
costuming and dress for the character.
His most recently written book, as with his
other books, is hand-lettered and it will be
complete after he designs the jacket.
“I hate to do jackets.” Sendak said “They
must sell the book. I need time and it will take
me two to three* weeks to complete the jacket.”
As an instructor at Parsons in New York
City, Sendak instructs only graduate students
in a picture books course
The successful author realizes he has gaps in
his formal education but feels a formal
education is not vital to being a successful
artist and writer
“I didn’t like school.” he said. “I think you
should teach vourself and learn.”
Many of the questions from the audience
involved getting published and Sendak stressed
the need for persistence and confidence
“What are they going to do without us?” he
said “They’ve got to publish .”
In his career. Sendak has illustrated about 80
books for other authors and has written and
illustrated 12 of his own books.
Besides writing and illustrating books.
Sendak's other accomplishments include
making an animated film for CBS entitled
Really Rosie.
The author’s work schedule, he said, is seven
days a week for four or five hours each day.
Most of Sendak's work has been presented
to the Rosenbach Foundation in Philadelphia.
“I gave my pictures to them because they
would show them.” he said. “Other places
wanted to lock my work up and preserve it.”
Sendak feels very strongly about the work he
does and said ideas must flow from hand to
heart to head.
“The stimulant to picture making is the
language and children are caught by the
language.” Sendak said, stressing the words
are just as important as the pictures in a
children's book.
In addition to the lecture and workshops.
Sendak held an autographing session Wednesday
in the children’s library at Aderhold.

Wold satellites are ‘pie in the sky’
Maurice Sendak speaks to University students
NEW YORK (I'PI)—Those
bitter old gags about “pie in
the sky” have boomeranged
miraculously. Today the sky is
full of pie for those who know
how to reach for it.
One who has reached suc
cessfully is Bob Wold, a broad
cast advertising man, from
Minneapolis, who worked his
way out to the Pacific Coast
literally looking for pie in the
sky—and found it.
Wold quit the huge N.W.
Ayer ad agency some years
ago to form his own companv
to sell pie on a Westar satellite
transponder orbiting the earth
in space. He bought rights to
5,000 hours of transponder time
annually. He resells it to
broadcasting stations, televi
sion producers and big adver-
• tising sponsors.
He travels the United States
from coast to coast, selling the
time and arranging the details
of the satellite transmission of
the programs
His profit is large and he has
only one direct competitor, the
Hughes Television Network,
although he says there proba
bly will be others in time. His
business is founded, one might
say, on getting an early footing
not on the traditional “ground
floor" but in outer space.
He now has about 250 regular
clients and his clients get a
much bigger slice of the pie
than he does.
"There are enormous sav
ings in transmission costs of
live TV and radio programs
via the satellite transponder as
compared with telephone land
line coaxial cables," Wold
said.
“I can move a half-hour live

In January, 1979. Wold
landed a contract to transmit
network feed programs from
the mainland to a group of
stations in Hawaii on a regular
basis He says he can sell time
to the Hawaiian stations for
$330 an hour that would cost
them $1,800 to $3,000 an hour
by cable and landline, accord
ing to the season and time of
