What can be said about a movie that was named after a
roller skating rink in 1890s Wyoming?
Indeed, Michael Cimino's "Heaven's Gate," a stillborn $40
million "western epic,” has the pacing of the patrons of such
rinks, rolling around and around with no concrete destination
and no apparent intent of finding one After viewing the
recently re-released two-and-a-half hour version, it's quite
understandable why United Artists yanked this cinematic
leper out of public view for extensive re-editing; in its
original four-hour length, it must have been intolerable
The film focuses on the community of Sweetwater, Wyo ,
and its predominately Eastern European citizenry it ap
pears that the local cattle barons of the territory originally
sold the immigrants the worst parcels of land in the state,
causing a few of the starving settlers to kill some of the
barons' livestock in order to survive The Association < as the
barons are collectively called) decide to call in a small army
of gunmen to kill of most of the male township
Caught up in the crossfire are Jim Averill (Kris Kristoffer-
son), a US. Marshall and Nate Champion (Christopher
Walken), a troubleshooter (he sometimes shoots im
migrants) who works for the Association Both are in love
with Ella Watson (Isabel! Huppert), who owns a cathouse on
the edge of town and who has been recently added to the
Association's "death list" for taking payment in stolen cat-
The story that ensues is told in the most wretched narrative
rubble in some time Take the first 20 minutes, for example,
which show Kristofferson, and John Hurt, who plays a crony
of the Association later on. graduating from Harvard The
scene contains a prolonged commencement ceremony
featuring a speech by Joseph Cotten as the head of the school
Hurt and Kristofferson are quite obviously close at this point,
and are falling in love with a couple of ladies who are wat-

ching the ceremony. Afterwards, there is an extended waltz
during which a cast of hundreds threaten to dance the whole
of Strauss' "Blue Danube ' The whole Harvard scene does
absolutely nothing for the plot; it is never mentioned and
reallv has nothing to do with the movie
Neither does John Hurt's character When he and Kristot-
ferson meet in Wyoming on opposite sides of the fence, they
briefly mention the barons' death list, then part ways During
the rest of the movie, Hurt follows the barons and their
gunmen around while in a drunken stupor until he is blown
away for no apparent reason
Likewise botched is the handling of the Kristofferson-
Huppert-Walken love triangle Huppert. though she tries
valiantly, is never allowed any free reign over her portrayal
of Ella When we first meet her, she is already having doubts
about both Walken and Kristofferson, and when she finally
decides to stick with Walken, she may just was well have
made her decision by the toss of a coin
But perhaps of all the performers involved in this fiasco,
the one who loses the most may be Kristofferson himself He
was willing to let his whole "acting” career ride on Cimino,
and it’s unfortunate While he makes his most convincing
visage as Averill, Cimino has given Kristofferson absolutely
nothing to say One of the few times when Kristofferson has
any line of dramatic importance is during the scene in the
roller rink (which doubles as a town hall) - as he reads the
death list to the citizens
It's quite possible, that the coherence of "Heaven's Gate"
may have been lost on the cutting room floor This would ex
plain the current version's total lack of any logical flow Why
does the movie end with Kristofferson on a boat off the coast
of Rhode Island? Why does a massive battle scene featuring
hundreds of cast members yelling over the gunplay contain
the single subtitle "Help me!"?
Perhaps it was the unconscious plea of Cimino

Every so often, there
comes along a film which
has a dumb title, but is
nonetheless a good movie.
Such were the likes of "Inva

dumb titles and live up to

script. It's a tragic thing to
watch great talents like Burt
Lancaster John Savage and
Rod Steiger wasted on
material such as this. What
entertainment value there is
in the film is due to their ef
forts.
The western saga deals
with two down trodden but
feisty girls whose search for
adventure and a "real man"
lead them to join the famous
Doolin-Dalton outlaw gang
With them we learn that,
contrary to popular
misconception, outlaws were
just a bunch of regular guys
who only wanted to be kind
grandfathers, good
husbands and friends to the
common man They were
(as depicted in the film)
welcomed by the people and
sought by the law only
"because it's the law’s job"
Perhaps it's the missing bad
guy that is the lacking ele
ment in this film's
substance
The movie isn't a total
failure, but for a better
value, go see "Blazing Sad
dles" for the umpteenth
time
the troop is killed and
Morant leads the men in
pursuit of the Boers He and
two other comrades are then
court-martialed for the
killing of Boer prisoners
The film's style is cour
troom drama with flash
backs to contrast the
evidence given by witnesses
with the actual events The
court action is high-paced
and moving
Morant, played by Edward
Woodward, has a subtle
energy and cynical wit that
makes him stirring. He is a
time bomb that could ex
plode at any moment, but
silently ticks with im
patience Woodward unfolds
the man slowly, revealing
these characteristics in such
a way that one is unsure
whether to condemn the
soldier or pity the man
Beresford uses irregular
camera angles to express
tension in the courtroom.
The men appear vulnerable
and uncomfortable from
these points-of-view
Beresford also
collaborated on the
screenplay (an Academy
Award nominee this year)
with Jonathan Hardy and
Davi Stevens Based on the
Kenneth Ross stageplay, the
dialogue possesses a natural
quality Instead of being too
real, the lines are poignant,
but not too idealistic
"Breaker Morant" is an
intriguing drama that in
duces thought < a rare
quality in films lately). In
view of this fact, you should
try to see it soon — it won’t
last here long
