The Georgia football team was the first Bulldog team ever
to win a national championship, but there soon may be
another Georgia squad with a national title — the Georgia
women's golf team
The women s team made a convincing bid for a number
one ranking this past weekend when they won their third
straight Women's Southern Intercollegiate Championship by
21 strokes, beating the finest collegiate teams in the nation at
the University Golf Course
The women carded a final-round 296 Sunday, shattering the
previous tournament single-round record of 304. to tally a
913 total, far ahead of defending national champion Tulsa's
second-place 934
"That's a super team round." Georgia coach Liz Murphey
said of the record-breaking total "Super, great, magnificent
That's awesome!”
Georgia's three-round total of 913 was also a record for the
tournament
The Georgia women entered the final round one stroke
down to Tulsa, which had led after the end of both the first
two rounds
Georgia's Mitzi Edge took individual honors in the tourna
ment. overcoming a one-stroke deficit in the final round to
edge Miami's Patti Rizzo, by one stroke with a 221
"Mitzi certainly proved to Patti and the rest of the col
legiate world that she will be a force to be reckoned with in
the national tournament.” Murphey said.
Edge and Rizzo, who played in the same threesome along
with Tulsa's LuLong Hartley, were tied for the lead entering
the 18th hole, where Edge birdied to clinch the victory
"I was just pumped up all day long." Edge said of her final-
round 72. "This tournament meant so much to me
"I love this course so much. I love playing it under com
petitive conditions." Edge said.
Edge said being paired with Rizzo didn't affect her game
‘T was glad I was paired with Patti, so I could see how she
stood," she said "I wasn’t really thinking about it. I was just

Gloria Jackson and Loretta
Thompson missed qualifying

Walker, Jackson and

Thompson, racing for the
first time in the relay events,
ran a superb anchor leg ac

that with some work his
relay team will qualify for
Nationals before the end of
the season.
Linda Detlefsen ran her
personal best in the 3,000-

school record by 20 seconds
Saturday's competition was
the toughest Detlefsen has
had to face since the Millrose

The U S collegiate record
was broken by the first three

Detlefsen finished 15th with
a time of 9:52.
In one of the highlights of
the Penn Relays, the Bon

Detlefsen placed seventh

Edge's win was kind of a comeback for her. as she didn't
qualify for the Lady Palidan in March even though her score
ing average is second in the nation.
"I was really just playing fair up until this tourney,” said
Edge, who has won three straight Peach State tournaments
on the University Course. "I really took a long break after the
fall season. I didn't touch a club over Christmas, and it took
me a while to get back in the groove. ’’
Besides Edge's 72, Terri Moody shot a tournament-low 71
and Denise King shot a 74 to pace the third-round explosion
King finished third individually behind Edge and Rizzo
with a 229, while Moody finished in a five-way tie for fifth
with a 232
Both Edge and King cited the home-course advantage as a
factor in the women's victory.
"We know this course better than anybody," Edge said.
“When we get it going, we re tough to beat.
“It's such an intimidating course. You just have to learn all
the breaks, and we know the greens like the back of our
hands.”
Said King: “The support had something to do with it. I love
it when people are following me.”
Cindy Pleger finished in a three-way tie with a 234 total for
the Bulldogs while Caroline Gowan added a 243.
Besides fourth-ranked Tulsa, several of the nation's finest
golf teams finished behind the Lady Dogs Sixth-ranked Stan
ford finished third with a 949 total, top-ranked Miami finished
fourth with a 951, number three Florida State finished fifth
with a 951 and fifth-ranked Florida finished ninth with a 968
According to Murphey. beating the top teams in the nation
should give the women a big boost for the national tourna
ment. which will take place at the University Golf Course
June 17-20.
“Having this win in our hip pockets will give this group
needed confidence," Murphey said.
Edge agreed with her coach. “Definitely I think we really
needed this win for nationals."
