Henderson novel shows true Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix’s life and music have reached the status of
legend in the years after his death To many he was already a
messiah and by his death made a musical martyr No matter
what he was to any one person, his music and personality
helped shape the history of popular music His controversial
and short life should be of interest to all rock fans
Michael Henderson has released an in-depth look at
Hendrix’s life under the title “‘Scuse Me While I Kiss the
Sky. " The well-researched hook is written as if author David
Henderson was a constant companion of the famous
guitarist. The extreme detail and careful filling in of blank
spaces make the book flow smoothly as it recounts the life of
a very troubled artist The biography does more than simply
trace the events of Hendrix's life This account is written by a
man who truly loves and understands Hendrix's music.
Though Henderson did not know Hendrix while he was
alive, to write the book he interviewed over 100 of Hendrix’s
personal acquaintances He used the interviews, film clips
and private recording collections to gain further insight into
a very elusive public figure
The author uses poetic license and information from a
variety of sources to construct a vivid picture of what was
going on around Hendrix and possibly what was going on
inside his head Henderson's writing prowess and musical
knowledge guides you through a world of a very unique and
gifted man
As a writer, Henderson’s credentials are strong, and his
identification with Hendrix makes him the perfect choice for
author of the biography The book was originally released
under the title of "Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child of the
Aquarian Age The original title seems more appropriate
because of Hendrix’s interest in voodoo and mysticism, along
with the author's focus on the song "Voodoo Chile ” The new
title and cover make the book look like an exploitative at
tempt to make some bucks, when in reality it is a very honest
and inspired attempt to document a man’s life
One thing Henderson goes into too much depth with is the
musical qualities of certain parts of each song He does an
excellent job of relating and translating the lyrics, but bogs
down when it comes to defining Hendrix's guitar work Using
his musical knowledge, he describes many of the pieces in
technical lingo that only a music professor would un
derstand Since most of Hendrix’s work did not fit into the
boundaries of traditional music, it seems inappropriate to
describe it in classical terms.
The book does have style and breathes the essence of a man
who was as introspective and shy a person as he was an
outspoken and commanding performer Few people un
derstood Hendrix and even his closest friends were puzzled
by him Henderson has made an attempt to get inside an
artist who was taken by death before he ever got a chance to
figure himself out Hendrix often said that death was his
adviser Henderson must have been talking to the reaper
himself to understand Jimi so well But as one of his friends
said Those who knew Jimi Hendrix the best were those who
loved his music " Hendrix has left us his music, so his death
is not to be mourned.
Hendrix himself said that the reason people get so sad
when someone dies is that They haven't finished using him
They're selfish When 1 die I want people to play music, go
wild and freak out and do anything they wanna do." Sounds
like good advice to me.
‘Comin ’at Ya’a showcase for special effects, not plot
Hill latest movie
is bad concoction
By JANE BOWLER
Red and Mat It Staff Writer
Some people can condemn
a movie before they see it,
merely on the basis of a film
clip they may have seen on a
television commercial,
some people don't even need
that much they can
ridicule a movie on the sole
basis of knowing its plot. At
times these people can be
absolutely right. Before
seeing “Southern Comfort"
one might condemn it solely
for its title, but after viewing
it the true reasons for
deficiency are made known.
What could be worse than
the title? The plot, direction
and acting
Take the National Guard,
put them on maneuvers in a
Louisiana swamp throw in a
few redneck Cajuns and
simmer in quicksand, and
you come up with a
concoction that will fertilize
your sickest houseplants.
The conflict in "Southern
Comfort" arises when a few
members of the National
Guard decide to borrow a
few boats from the trapping
camp of a resident Cajun
When the Cajun returns, one
of the soldiers decides to
have some fun by shooting at
him with his rifle blanks.
The Cajun decides to get
some revenge by shooting
back with real bullets. A
mini-war breaks out
between the National Guard
and the Cajuns
The characterizations of
the soldiers are arbitrary
and unconventional One
soldier is a pimp and drug
dealer in his civilian life,
while another is a high
school football coach who
teaches history. All of the
soldiers seem to hate each
other, leaving us with a
reassuring picture of our
National Guard A clear
dipiction of Cajun faction is

never attempted, so clear
cut reasons concerning their
motivations for the attack
are not brought out.
One might think that at
least some decent bloody
gore could be salvaged out of
everything. After all, this
movie was billed as the
greatest picture of its kind
since "Deliverance." This is
not the case. All of the
deaths, bloody as they are,
are expected, and that takes
all the fun out of it. In a last
ditch effort a pig is
slaughtered on camera, so at
least you can go home and
get a good vomit out of all
this swamp mess.
Walter Hill, who also
directed "The Long Riders,”
is so obsessed with coming
up with another
"Deliverance" that he grabs
at anything and everything.
He uses slow motion in an
attempt to draw out the pain
of death only to have it look
exactly like a "Six-Million
Dollar-Man" type slow
motion scene.
The acting is not one of this
picture's redeemable points
either. Keith Carrdine's
portrayal of a know-it-all
redneck soldier is dodgy and
inconsistent.
After sitting through two
hours of cussin’ and tobbaco
chawin' type language, the
ambigous ending comes as
no great surprise, but one
