Area banks give no break
for students with checking
By DEBBIE ENGLISH
Red and Black < onlributiiirf Writer
If you are like most University students
you probably still maintain a checking ac
count at home because it is fairly easy to
write and cash a check at the bookstore or at
local shops with a University I D. card. But
what if you keep a job along with your
studies or just want the comfort of having a
local checking account as well? What bank
hs the best deal for you?
None of the major banks contacted in
Athens offer special discounts or services to
college students , college bankers are treated
as regular customers.
Athens Bank and Trust offers three types
of checking accounts to its customers In a
regular checking account a minimum
balance of $350 must be maintained to avoid
service charges Anything below that wilt,
cost you $1 per month and a 12 cent per check
charge.
Athens Bank and Trust also offers a
special service for people who write 10
checks or else each month. This costs 25.
cents per check.
A third option is the New Outlooks Club,
which offers a variety of services to the
customer including free checks, no l'ce for
traveler's checks or money orders and other
discounts. The costs is $4.25 per month for
most students, but for married couples the
cost is $5.75.
A bounced check fee at Athens Bank and
Trust is $9. An instant banker service is be
ing installed at Georgia Square, and when it
is completed customers with a 24-hour bank
ing card may put the machine to work
anytime.
In terms of convenience, the Citizens and
Southern Bank is a hands-down winner
They have five branch locations and a
popular instant banking machine outside the
bookstore.
A $50 initial deposit is required to open an
account at C & S and, like Athens Bank and
Trust, customers must maintain a $350
balance to avoid the $1.25 per month, 15 cents
per check service charge An overdraft costs
W
The First American Bank and Trust Com
pany offers what is called a Blue Eagle ac
count For a cost of $4 per month, a customer
may have unlimited check writing, free per
sonalized wallet-size checks, and free
traveler's checks This service is great for
students who write between 20 and 30 checks
a month.
First American also offers a regular
checking account that requires a minimum
$350 balance; anything below that costs $1
per month and 15 cents per check If fewer
than 15 checks are written, the cost is 20
cents per check with no monthly service
charge
A bounced check at First American costs
you $9
First Federal Savings offers a checking ac
count in which a minimum balance of $100
■will eliminate service charges. However,'
anything below that results in a flat $5 a
month charge
An overdraft at First Federal costs $7.50;
however, they have what is called a "line of
credit" which extends to customers who
write bad checks The bank will cover insuf
ficient funds for customers who opt to use the
service.
At First National Bank of Athens all that is
necessary to open a checking account is a
deposit
If a minimum balance of $500 is maintain
ed. no service charge is applied. First Na
tional has a Master Charge coverage plan for
overdrafts. If a customer writes a bad
check. Master Charge will deposit quantities
of $50 into the account to cover the overdraft
Customers must have Master Charge
acounts to utilize this service. Without it. a
bounced check will cost $7.50.
At the Athens Federal Savings and Loan
Association, an account with less than $350
calls for a service charge of $3 per month and
15 cents per check
A bounced check costs $7.
