In what is perhaps the double bill of
the year, Steve Landesberg will per
form at the Memorial Hall Ballroom
with singer-songwriter Tim Bays open
ing. Both men specialize in a dry but
unmistakably demented style of humor
that is both intelligent and hysterically
funny.
To those who are familiar with
Landesberg only through his role as
Sgt. Dietrich on TV's “Barney Miller”
his style of stand-up comedy should
come as a surprise, Landesberg varies
the deadpan cool that is so evident on
television with ethnic impressions and
wider variety of subjects.
Landesberg started out in New York
City playing clubs like the Improv. “I
was just playing places and waiting to
get on Carson," ne said.
The job on “Barney Miller" came
about quite by chance. While playing a
character called “Crazy Jim the
psychiatrist" Landesberg was spotted
by a writer from the short-lived “Paul
Sands Show” and was offered a guest
shot as a Viennese violinist. That led to
a succesion of acting jobs including his
first appearance on “Barney
Miller”—as a criminal.
Tim Bays, who will open for
Landesberg, is another story entirely.
Aside from being the only acoustic
singer-songwriter to open for Lynyrd
Skynyrd, he has played with such
groups as the All-Weenie Revue and the
Mountain Mime Troupe, as well as by
himself.
Hays’ repertoire is one of the most
varied and unusual around. He sings
incredibly poignant songs about lost
love and rootlessness reminiscent of
Tom Waits, but these are set against
epic tall tales worthy of the best of Arlo
Guthrie. Bays is one of the few per
formers about whom it can be said
there is no one similar.
The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets
were sold out at press time.

They have a combined 95 years of motion
picture acting in 129 feature films. He is 77
and has survived two pacemakers and
chronic heart disease. She is 75 and has
more energy than Herschel Walker in the
fourth quarter of this year’s Florida game.
They are Henry F onda and Katherine Hep
burn. together for the first time in their
careers, stars of this year’s most acclaimed
motion picture. “On Golden Pond. "
"On Golden Pond" is set in the beautiful
lake country of New Hampshire It begins
with scenes of tranquil water, blossoming
flowers and loons swimming peacefully on
the lake. When you first see these images of
serenity you understand why Norman
Thayer Jr. and his wife Ethel make the an
nual trek to their summer home filled with
its memories of a long and happy life.
Norman Thayer Jr., excellently portrayed
by Henry Fonda, is a retired professor from
the University of Pennsylvania. He is near
ing his 80th birthday and. though he has
always been afraid of death, he is now almost
obsessed with the thought of it His wife.
Ethel, played by Katherine Hepburn, is a
strong, determined, stand-by-your-man
woman who tries to reassure Norman and
take his mind off death.
While the Thayers are at Golden Pond.
Norman is to celebrate his 80th birthday, and
they recieve a letter saying that their
daughter, Chelsea, is going to be payingi
a visit for the celebration This news doesn’t
seem to excite Norman, and we discover
later that the father-daughter relationship
between Norman and Chelsea is anything but
idllyic. It seems that Chelsea, well-played by
Jane Fonda, cannot stop blaming her father
for not being her best friend while she was
grow ing up
Henry Fonda is magnificent as Norman
Thayer Jr. He has protrayed many
dead after all
memorable characters in his time—Young
Abe Lincoln, Wyatt Earp, Mister Roberts—
but he is at his best as the cantankerous Nor
man. He is a totally natural actor who
makes you feel as if you know his character
personally.
“On Golden Pond is Henry Fonda's
movie. Time and time again he steals the
show with hilarious one-liners delivered in a
sarcastic, almost biting, tone. One of the
best examples of this is the scene is which
Normal and Bill, Chelsea's lover, are
discussing where Bill and Chelsea should
sleep while they are in Norman's house Nor
man wryly remarks, “You could have the
room where I first violated Ethel."
"On Golden Pond" not only showcases the
great talents of Henry Fonda but also feature
an equally great actress, Katherine Hep
burn She has an indomitable spirit that
helies her age, and she captivates the au
dience as Ethel Perhaps the best example
of the intensity with which she plays Ethel is
evident in one particular scene. Chelsea has
just returned to Golden Pond after a trip to
Europe and she begins to speak to Ethel
about Norman in a disparaging manner.
Ethel slaps Chelsea’s face and, in a voice
ringing with indignation, says, “That's my
husband you're talking about ."
"On Golden Pond" was originally a play
written by Ernest Thompson and it was
adapted for the screen by the same
playwright Unlike many plays, "On Golden
Pond" makes the transition from stage to
screen quite easily. The directon by Mark
Rydell is sensitive and well-balanced, and
with such talents as the two Fondas and Hep
burn it must have been a director's dream.
"On Golden Pond" is, in the end, the story
of two people who have grown old together
and have managed to stay in love. The
movie has a little bit of something for
everyone It'll make you laugh, cry and
leave the theater feeling that maybe
Hollywood isn't dead after all.
