North Georgia hiking book is almost perfect
By JAMES P H. FELLER
and KUrlt ( aUrlbnUn, WrIUr
A Yankee from Indiana has provid
ed outdoor minded Georgians with
what is surely the most useful
reference available for the northern
half of this state Tim Homan ap
pears to know more about places like
Rabun Bald and Penitentiary Branch
and Warwoman Dell than most
natives He has compiled a guide to
349 miles of hiking trails in the state’s
northernmost 26 counties, all of
which he claims to have walked
himself Judging by the detail of his
descriptions, the claim may be
; believed
The 80 trails range in length from
- 250 yards (a state park nature stroll
near Lake Hartwell) to79 miles the
Georgia portion of the Appalachian
Trail) The description of each trail
includes its length, a difficulty
rating, a detailed account of its twists
Z and turns, signs and markings,
sights, special features such as
; truculent wild boars or no water and
7 road directions from the nearest
sizable town Homan indicates which
trails are crowded (the Appalachian
Trail can be bumper to bumper in
both directions) and which are little
ilsed
In the back of the book there is a
short section containing tips for
beginning hikers Though this is
nothing like a substitute for Colin
Fletcher’s "The Complete Walker"
(which is something like holy scrip
ture to dedicated woodsy folk i, it con
tains enough information on things
like blister prevention to keep a
novice from making him or herself
miserable on a weekend trip There
is also a list of addresses to which one
can write for maps of Georgia's
various wild areas
One notable thing the book does not
mention about each trail is whether
or not camping is allowed However,
it does tell how to get in touch with
people in the various Ranger
Districts, the Corps of Engineers and
other authorities, who would know
There is one final point to consider
before we stamp the book triple-A-
recommended ft's a pocket-sized
paperback, not much thicker than
your average Harlequin Romance,
and you can take one home for (7
This breathtaking price reminds me
that there are two fundamentally dif
ferent attitudes toward camping, and
two very different types of people to
be found in the woods There is first
what Bil Gilbert has called the “high
camp” camper This sort has bought
the notion that he can gain all the
spiritual benefits of woodsy living
and still, through modern
technology, be as comfortable on the
trail as he is at home
When you meet him he will be as
bespangled as a Christmas tree with
pounds and pounds of weight-saving
camping gear, all of it made of goose
down and rip-stop Nylon and
titanium alloy, that he has bought for
a very great deal of money from one
of the rugged boutiques To judge by
its absurd price, Peachtree
Publishing has aimed Homan's
guidebook directly at the "high
camp" crowd.
There is another group out in the
bush, though, with a completely dif
ferent attitude These are people like
cowboys, forest rangers, wildlife
managers, biologists and so forth —
that is, people who are out there
because they have to be, for whom
hiking and camping are chores con
nected with their jobs. They know
from years of experience that it is not
possible to be very comfortable in the
woods
A compromise is possible. One is
not obliged to be either an over
financed technofreak or an
Abominable Woodsman. Students
who want to go camping for fun or
scenery or fireside good fellowship
will do best to rent their equipment,
very reasonably, from the University
Union.
As for "The Hiking Trails of North
Georgia," borrow it from a rich
friend or get hold of a library copy It
is certainly comprehensive, and can
help anyone pick a promising
destination.

The Athens Creative Theatre’s production of “The Im
porta nee of Being Earnest" Friday night proved two things:
One. after all these years Oscar Wilde is as funny as ever;
and two, Wilde is so funny it’s not a good idea to try to outdo
him
As I watched the play, I imagined w hat might have happen

"Hard lenses cleaned and polished ”
ed if the playwright had been sitting among the audience at
the Athens Community Theatre. “Wait, it doesn’t say to do
that," he would shout, rising from his aisle seat. "Just say
the lines as I wrote them," he would scream, heading into a
full-blown frenzy
I know just what you mean. Mr Wilde The production,
directed by David McTier and his assistant director. Becky-
Read, features some talented high-school actors. At times, it
was clever and charming But the charm of the play went
slipping on a banana peel every time it had its essentially
verbal humor upstaged hy physical yuk-yuks
The household servants should have been restrained In
stead, they were portrayed as deranged, and the overdrawn
and inappropriate characterization was irritating. Not
everyone in the audience shared this opinion, though Each
time Lane and Moulton (both played by Patrick Tomlin) and
Merriman (Burnley Vest) came lurching on stage they got
loud and long laughs
The eating scenes in the play were also played for more
than they were worth — another unnecessary touch that
seemed aimed at getting the cheap laugh. A crunch on a very
loud piece of toast and a pause for the laughs to roll was more
annoying than amusing
Some of the high-points of the evening were the scenes bet
ween Algernon (Cal Clements) and Cecily Cardew (Jeanine
Dwinell). Dwinell is lovely, and she played Cecily with a
perfect mixture of girlishness and cheeky spunk She thinks
she has finally met the slightly wicked and infamous
Earnest, and she explains her romantic obsession with him
by saying, "A man who is much talked about is always very
attractive ’’ Sweet Cecily pegs it there, and with perfect
delivery, too.
Scenes between Gwendolen Fairfax (Karen Stormer) and
Cecily also came off nicely. Though Stormer had a slight
tendency to over do in the first act, she settled down about
halfway through Her character ended up as likable as Alger
non and Cecily.
Other characters in the play are John Worthing (Kenny
Aguari; Lady Bracknell (Jenifer Rees); Miss Prism
(Kirsten De Vorsey > and the Rev. Chasuble (Harvey Birth).
The costumes conveyed the period, and the skill of the
costume crew, quite well. The crew cared whether the actors
looked good, and it showed.
In the small theater, set design (Cal Clements and David
McTier) was simple, but cleverly done The size limitations
also required that action take place in the aisles and on the
stage apron — a case of necessity giving rise to staging that
was both inventive and pleasing.
Certainly theater of this sort has limitations Still, produc
tions like this one and organizations like Athens Creative
Theatre are invaluable to the community. Talented, local
youngsters have a chance and a place to perform for friends
and neighbors More importantly, the community has the
pleasure of their performing It may not be Broadway, but
"The Importance of Being Earnest" is a pretty fair bargain.
The play will run Feb 4, 5 and 6 at the Athens Community
Theatre behind the Taylor-Gradv House. It begins at 8 p.m.
each night, and tickets are $3 for adults. $2.50 for students
and senior citizens and $2 for groups of 10 or more. For reser
vations or more information call the Recreation and Parks
Department at 546-7972.

Athens is not exactly
known as a center for haute
cuisine. This description
would probably be more ap
propriate for Atlanta in this
area of the country, but
Athens does have several
very good, high-quality
restaurants. One such
restaurant is the Peking
Restaurant located at 2222
Gaines School Road
The Peking Restaurant is
an average-looking Chinese
restaurant with Oriental
wallhangings and red table
cloths. The food, however,
makes it an above-average
one. The menu offers all the
Chinese delicacies you would
want to choose from. They
have everything from egg
foo yung for $3 45 to a Peking
duck which serves four for
$18
On a recent Friday night
my date and I had a Peking
Dinner for two. The sizzling
rice soup that began our
meal was nice and hot It has
a very tasty broth and was
filled with plenty of big
pieces of chicken,
mushrooms, celery, water
chestnuts and shrimp. The
next course was the com
bination platter of egg rolls,
paper chickens and fried
wan ton. The egg rolls were
hot and crispy, but they were
a little too small for my lik
ing Of course, you do get the
paper chicken and wan ton
so that may explain why
they were small
The main courses that
followed were both very
good and well-prepared The

Mongolian beef came on a
bed of fried rice and was top
ped with scallions. The rice
was a little too chewy and
the beef could have been a
little hotter, but they do give
you sizable portions. The
sweet and sour shrimp was
excellent. Each shrimp was
lightly breaded and came
with lots of onions, carrots,
pineapple and green pep
pers.
Peking Restaurant offers
glazed bananas and glazed
apples for dessert, but on the
night we went they were out
of bananas so we just had ap
ples They were perfect, hot
in the middle with just the
right taste of honey in the
glaze. Be careful, though,
because the glaze may stick
to your teeth like a candied
apple
Peking Restaurant is open
for lunch from 11-2 Tues -
Fri. and for dinner from 5-10
Tues.-Thur. and Sun. and
from 5-11 on Fri. and Sat.
They are closed on Monday
They don't serve mixed
drinks, but they do have
oriental beer and wine (rice
and plum) as well as
domestic stock.
