Harris leads Georgia over South Carolina
Lady Dogs top
Ga. State 98-60

The 15th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs won their second
game in three nights and improved their overall record
to 13-5 with a 98-60 victory over the injury-riddled
Georgia State Panthers.
The Lady Dogs jumped ahead early, outscoring
Georgia State 30-8 in one eight minute stretch, and tak
ing a 53-28 lead into the intermission. Georgia Coach
Andy lenders substituted freely throughout the game
and all Lady Bulldogs say playing time.
Four Lady Dogs scored in double figures. Georgia
was led in scoring by Wanda Holloway and Janet Har
ris both scoring 18 points. All of Harris’ points came in
the first half.
Rhonda Malone finished with fifteen. Cynthia Collins
had 14 and Laura Greeson scored 13.
Georgia State, playing without injured Wade Trophy-
nominee Denise Lloyd, lost its seventh game in a row
and fell to 7-14.
The Lady Panthers were led in scoring by senior for
ward Sherry Stinchcomb who scored 23 points and
Sheryl Martin who had 20.
The Georgia victory avenged a 79-77 overtime loss
the Lady Dogs suffered at the hands of the Lady Pan
thers in Atlanta earlier this season. In that game Lloyd
scored 31 points.
Georgia State has not been the same since Lloyd
broke her wrist earlier in the season.
Landers said. “If Lloyd had been in the game, she
would have definitely made a difference."

When a team has to hold tryouts in the middle of the season
to fill out its roster, there are serious problems somewhere.
Such is the case with the South Carolina Lady Gamecocks.
The 12-5,15th ranked Georgia Lady Bulldogs exploited those
problems and dropped the fading 12th-rankcd Lady
Gamecocks to a 12-6 record with an 82-75 overtime victory
Saturday.
Some debate whether South Carolina is a legitimate top
twenty team without the starters who left school, but Lady
Bulldog Coach Andy Landers believes all debate should be
closed.
“They’ve got a great basketball team. If they could put the
mental things away from them, they could go on and have a
great year," Landers said Saturday. "I think they played
awfully well tonight ’’
The I^ady Dogs were spurred to victory by the long-awaited
Janet Harris drives to the basket
reunion between Janet Harris and the Georgia offense.
Harris scored 37 points and snatched a school record-tying 23
rebounds, including 6 of the team’s 10 points in overtime The
6-foot-3 freshman wheeled inside the South Carolina zone at
will, nailing down 23 points after intermission.
Although Harris was dominant, the Lady Dogs relied
heavily on the ballhandling and shooting expertise of
sophomore guard Lou Sims Ponytail flapping and jumpshot
dropping. Sims scored 16 points, grabbed four rebounds and
swiped three steals. However, Georgia still trailed by two
points with just seconds remaining in regulation
Sims was the logical choice to take the final shot, but
Landers said no set play was designed. “If we'd set it, it
probably wouldn’t have worked," he said. The Lady Dogs
showed patience, and South Carolina left Sims open for an 18-
footer. As the cry of "Lou for two" echoed through the
Coliseum, the l^ady Dogs were saved for the moment.
The first half was primarily a see saw affair and neither
team controlled for any extended period of time. Georgia
abandoned its press early on. but its straight man-to-man
defense was not much more effective.
Evelyn Johnson, obviously well-taught by her big brother.
Magic, showed a variety of spinning one-on-one moves and
took the Lady Dogs for i4 points. All-America Sheila Foster
had a field day inside, picking up 12 points, and causing
Georgia’s Wanda Holloway and Cynthia Collins to pick up
three fouls each. Rhonda Malone, regaining her shooting
touch, tried to keep pace with Johnson and scored 10 points
The second half turned into a fouling contest with
Holloway, Collins and Malone taking turns committing
personals. Holloway fouled out with 8:19 left and Georgia
trailing 57-52. The 6-foot-2 sophomore had four points and one
rebound.
The Lady Dogs could have folded the tent, but they
tightened up their defense and Harris continued to pour in the
points. South Carolina shot 57 percent from the floor in the
first half, but cooled off to 33 percent down the stretch.
The Lady Gamecocks held a three-point lead in the over
time, but Georgia reeled off 10 straight points and gained
what Landers believes is a very important victory. "I think it
should be a confidence-builder," Landers said. "We did what
we had to do to win.”

Gymnasts finish 4th at Tech meet
By CHARLESODUM

ATLANTA — The men’s gymnasts continued to show im
provement here Saturday in the Georgia Tech Invitational,
but it wasn’t quite enough as the Bulldogs placed fourth in the
six-team meet
The team's total of 230.75 was an overall improvement of
several points in their total a week ago against Memphis
State, but the men failed to place on the pommel horse and
were scored poorly on the parallel bars. And Georgia Tech’s
home-court advantage proved to be too much to overcome.
Georgia Tech won the Invitational, with Memphis State
finishing second. North Carolina State third. Georgia fourth.
Eastern Kentucky fifth and Jacksonville State sixth.
"I hate to say I’m satisfied with finishing fourth out of six
teams," Coach Steve Bonham said, “but we have to keep im
proving and the scores will take care of themselves. "
Freshman Tim Waggoner was again the leading gymnast
for Georgia. He was the only competitor to place in the meet
He finished first on the floor exercise and parallel bars.
Waggoner's score of 9.3 on the floor exercise tied a school
record set by Brad Becker in 1975. Waggoner also set a team-
high score on the horizontal bar, still rings and all-around
competition.
Roy Hinze returned to action for the men. but still did not
perform at full capacity Hinze did have the top vault for
Georgia with a career-high 9.2, however, and also had strong
performances on the still rings and floor exercise.
Other strong performers for Georgia were Ray Harris, who
had the top Georgia score on the pommel horse, but did not
place. Neil Odze. who scored high on the rings, vault and
floor exercise, and senior captain Tommy Turco. "We were
really surprised at Tech w inning like that." said Turco. "We
were hoping to finish a little higher than we did. We are
trained for consistency, however, and the routines we have
we re hitting. We are progressing very steadily,” Turco
said.
Bonham said many teams, including those in the Tech In
vitational. were coming up with injuries at this early point of
the season. "While we want to win every meet, w e don't want
to peak too early. Our guys are working under control, and
we want to keep them healthy," Bonham said.
The men will travel north this week to meet James
Madison in Harrisonburg. Va., on Feb. 5. and w ill compete in
the Towson State Invitational on Feb. 7 in Towson. Md

Relay team makes nationals
By ALAN JOHNS

The Lady Bulldog swimmers improved
their overall record to 6-1-1, with an 83-66
dousing of South Carolina Thursday at
Stegeman Pool. The Lady Gamecocks were
highly rated coming into the meet, having
finished 13th in the country last year at the
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for
Women.
The finest performance of the day for
Georgia came in the 400-yard medley relay.
The team of Ann Fitzgerald, Allyson
Farquharc, Libba Newman and Jody Stetson
qualifed for nationals with their time of
3:58.16
Fitzgerald capped the effort with two
excellent solo performances, winning both
the 50- and 200-yard backstrokes.
While the Lady Bulldogs were having their
way with the Lady Gamecocks, the men
were involved in a good old-fashioned cock
fight with the South Carolina men With only
two races remaining, the score was 49-48 in
favor of the visitors from Columbia. S.C. It
looked as if the meet would come down to the
final race, the 400-yard freestyle relay, a
winner-take-all race for seven points.
Georgia was favored.
South Carolina, however, closed the show
in the 200-yard breaststroke by taking first
and second, good for eight points. Georgia
did win the final race, but it was only good for
a heart-breaking 57-56 final.
The loss dropped the men’s record to 7-2.
Both the men and women will be in action
again Friday when they travel to Clemson to
make up a meet which was cancelled due to
the recent snow The Bulldogs will take on
