To sell beer, $1.50 tickets
By KEVIN Bl< KNELL

There's still sawdust on
the floor, but the Georgia
Theater will open tonight at
7
At press time renovations
were still being made on the
Athens landmark, but
Charles Sims, city manager
for the Georgia Theater
Company, said the opening
will go on as scheduled
We ll be open Friday," he
said, "but we won t be very
presentable ”
John Stimbler Jr.,
operations manager for the
Georgia Theater Company,
said the theater was opening
on Easter weekend "to give
us more time to get our
procedures together ” In a
few weeks the theater will
have a “grand opening," he
said
The theater will show
recently released movies for
an admission price of SI.50
And in addition to the
standard soft drinks and
popcorn, wine, beer, pizza
a nd hot dogs will be sold
"ft’s a valid concept,"
Stimbler said Several
theaters of the same kind in
Tallahassee, Fla , Knoxville,
Tenn , and Atlanta have
done very good business, he
said.
Stimbler said he didn’t
expect any legal problems
with selling beer and wine
“We’ll take all the proper
precautions,” he said The
company has already ob
tained a liquor license
No one under 19 will be
admitted except on Sundays
when alcohol will not be sold,
Stimbler said.
Ironically, the first film to
be shown at the theater will
be "Raiders of the Lost
Ark," a film that was ex-

tremely popular with people

However. Stimbler is not
worried about limiting the
theater’s audience "The 18-
to 26-year-olds are the prime
tickets for films," he said
Most universities have a
large population in those age
groups ”
This will be the first time
in over five years the theater
will be used for films. It
closed in 1976 and was
reopened as a concert hall in
1978 largely because of the
building's excellent
acoustics, it gained a
reputation as the best place
to hear live music in town.
Renovations will include a
new heating and cooling
system — "We’ve had the
old one since 1935,” Sims
said — and the installation of
a better sound system. "This
place has the best sound I've
ever heard," he said.
The building seats ap
proximately 500 people — 300
downstairs and 200 in the
balcony. The balcony,
however, will not be used
unless necessary "We just
don’t have it ready,” said
Warren Douglas, manager
and projectionist of the
theater.

Students shopping for apartments for the
1982-83 academic year arc finding that most
rates, like almost everything else, are rising.
Rates of eight major student-occupied
complexes have risen, or will rise by next
fall, anywhere from 4 to 11 percent.
Apartment managers agree the increases
are due mainly to inflation.
"It's costing more to run apartments,”
said Elaine Stephens, assistant manager of
River Mill, which has increased its rent an
average of 7 percent. "We’ve raised them
because of the increases in the cost of
living."
"Our costs have gone up,” said Jeff Dean,
a leading agent for Sussex Club, which, at an
average of 11 percent, has the biggest in
crease of the complexes surveyed “Main
tenance has gone up, water has gone up and
cleaning and painting has gone up."

Most of the increases were also based on
competing apartment prices. ‘‘We’re
keeping up with everyone else,” said Cindy
Cowart, manager of Tivoli, which has raised
its rates an average of 6 percent.
“Everything’s going up, and we have to go
up just to run a complex.”
Callaway Gardens, the largest complex in
Athens, will increase an average of 9 per
cent University Gardens will increase its
rent an average of 8 percent and Village
expects a 10 percent increase. Le Chateau
Club will raise its rent 4 percent by fall
quarter, and Villa East and West have
already jumped their rents by the same
amount.
The nature of the tenants, mostly students,
also has something to do with the increases,
one manager said. "The student population
is not an inexpensive clientele to deal with,"
said Betty Knapp, manager of Village
Apartments. "Frequent turnover is a
problem, because it makes maintenance
costs higher and labor costs higher . "
And although the demand for apartments
has risen because of increased University
enrollment, most managers say demand is
not related to the increases. They say,
however, that apartments are filling more
quickly than in years past.
"People have started looking earlier,"
said Susan Cowart, manager of University-
Gardens and no relation to Cindy Cowart.
“We had people looking back in February ”
None of the managers were surprised
about the increases. "Our increases are
about the same as before," said Dorothy
Robertson, manager of Callaway Gardens
"We're really just trying to keep up with
inflation."
National faculty salaries
increase by 10.1 percent
From Staff and Hire Report*
Full-time faculty
members are making 10.1
percent more this year than
in 1980-81, according to the
American Association of
University Professors
(AAUP).
The AAUP survey,
published in the current
issue of its magazine,
Academe, showed that full
time teachers at private col
leges got bigger raises (11.5
percent) than public college
teachers (9.3percent).
Should Gov. George
Busbee sign the current
Board of Regents budget re
quest, University System
faculty will receive an
average 6 percent increase
next year.
The findings are consis-
tant with the AAUP's 1981
survey, which concluded
full-timers got average
salary increases of 10 per
cent from 1979-80 and
1980-81.
