Intramurals improved by changes
By Al.AN JOHNS
Rw) .fid Hlack Malt Writer
If you are not familiar
with the name Kim Koles
nik or the work she and her
staff have been doing with
inlramurals at Georgia, and
you plan on participating in
intramurals, listen up
Kim Kolesnik is the coor
dinator of intramurals at
the University She arrived
in Athens last August from
the University of Indiana
and brought with her a
master's of Recreational .
Sports and a flair for
organization and far
sighted ingenuity rare to
her field.
She found herself with the
enviable task of taking over
an already flourishing in
tramural program. One
might not expect a new kid
on the block to alter the look
of the neighborhood, but
Kolesnik jumped in with
both feet and diligently
searched out areas for
change and improvement.
She immediately impli-
mented an in-depth filing
system with a folder for
each sport. This would
enable someone to look
back to the previous year
and see how various teams
and individuals fared.
Later, one could track the
complete history of parti
cipants through their col
lege careers.
The system of playoffs in
each sport also fell under
Kolesnik's crafty eye. The
playoff system provided for
a six-game regular season,
with only the undefeated
teams advancing to the
playoffs. This was certainly
a disgusting system to all
the disgruntled 5-1 teams.
Kolesnik instituted a four-
game regular season with
all teams that do not forfeit
advancing to the playoffs.
Kolesnik explained, "I
felt this change gave the
poorer teams a chance to
get it together and still do
well in the tournament.
Many teams have not
played together before and
it takes them a while to
start playing well.”
Most of the changes
Kolesnik has made are
designed to increase in
terest and excitement.
“This year I didn't want to
make any major program
changes like dropping or ad
ding any sports,” Kolesnik
said. "I wanted to just sit
back this year and get a
good look at the participa
tion statistics of the existing
sports. We will be going
through an evaluation
period in a few weeks to
determine which sports will
be dropped and which new
sports will be added."
Kolesnik always empha
sizes the role of her staff in
improving the program.
She has three graduate
students on her staff who
are in charge of all the pro
gramming and operations
of various sports These in
clude Tammie Hardie, in
charge of individual sports,
inner-tube and water polo;
Richard Oates with golf and
co-ed softball; and Roger
Wakefield in charge of
men's and women’s soft-
ball. Coach Mike Castronis
is in charge of co-ed
volleyball, track, golf and
swimming and Coach Earl
Pales is in charge of all of
ficials.
Kolesnik also credits the
staff at the Physical Plant
with doing a tremendous job
of improving the intramural
facilities. The changes at
the Stegeman offices are ob
vious and there should be a
marked improvement at the
intramural fields with
Kolesnik in charge.
Kolesnik has instituted
some rule changes for this
spring For example, there
will be no more sliding in
softball except at home
plate to reduce the number
of injuries.
The rule concerning ties
in softball has also been
changed. Last year, in case
of a tie, the team which was
ahead last was declared the
winner. This year, play will
continue for 10 minutes and
Kim Kolesnik is turning intramural program around
if the game is still tied at the
end of the period, it will go
down on the books as a tie.
In tournaments, however,
play will continue until the
tie is broken.
Kolesnik has installed
some rules in the co-educa-
tional sports designed to
help alleviate the problem
of men dominating play.
For example, in co-ed
volleyball, if the ball is
touched more than once on
a side, it must be touched at
least once by a woman.
“These rules are not
designed to give the women
the advantage in any way,"
Kolesnik said, “but rather
to equalize them to the men
who tend to dominate a
game if you let them.”
Both men and women will
play by the same set of rules
this year. For example, the
women will play seven inn
ings, instead of the five they
played last year.
Kolesnik also has plans
for a field day called “The
Canine Competition” on
May 28 at the Intramural
Fields. The annual golf
tournament will be May 3-7;
the track meet on May 20
and the swim meet May 4.
As you can see, Kim
Kolesnik is rapidly making
her mark on the intramural
program, but she is hesitant
to take the credit for the
positive changes. She
credits the students for the
majority of the improve
ments.
"Most of the changes we
have made this year came
from student suggestions,”
she said, “simply because
they are our best connection
to the actual program
itself.”
