Belue slides safely into second base Sunday against Vandy

Byck Belue, speaking
after Georgia made yet
another last inning
comeback to nip Vanderbilt
8-7 Sunday, said he was not
looking forward to today’s 3
p.m. rematch with Clemson

The Georgia women’s
track team stood towering
over its rivals in the 1500-
meter and the long jump
this weekend at the
Dogwood Relays, in Knox
ville, Tenn. Linda
Detlefsen captured a new
Georgia school record in
the 1500-meter run, with a
time of 4:29.44, good
enough for a first place
finish. It was the best
showing of her collegiate
career
Detlefsen’s time did not
qualify her for the
Association of Inter
collegiate Athletics for
Women Nationals, but she
was .07 off of the goal.
Women’s track Coach
Steve Sitler said Detlefsen
should have no trouble
placing herself in the Na
tionals this year.
Detlefsen remains
unbeaten in the 1500-meter
run this season
Kathy Rankins also cap
tured a first place with a
20-9 3 4 long jump. Rankins
outdistanced two All-
at the plate, 7 RBIs, 2 home
runs, 1 double and 1 triple in
last weekend's three-game
series sweep of Southeastern
Conference foe Vanderbilt, it
seems Yankee Stadium
wouldn't intimidate him.
But Clemson carries
different connotations.
Because of academic
difficulties, Belue didn’t
accompany the baseball
Americas, Evalene Hat
cher of Morgan State and
Jeanette Williams of In
diana State in the process.
"She really blew the com
petition away,” Sitler
said
The Bulldog Babes have
this weekend off, but they
will be competing at the
Penn Relays April 22-23.
The Penn Relays should
provide high quality com
petition and Sitler said it
will be a good chance for
the team to prove itself as
high-quality competitors
Only two men, Herschel
Walker and Billy Richard,
placed In the Dogwood
Relays.
Walker captured fifth in
the 100-meter sprint with a
10:71. He was .23 off the
winning pace set by Mike
Mill _-r of Tennessee who
finished with a 10:48.
Richard captured se
cond place in the 110-
meter high hurdles with a
14:14. Villanova's Rodney
Wilson won the event with
a 14:07.
team to Clemson winter
quarter when the Dogs upset
the nationally ranked Tigers
7-3.
Today will be his first day
back since that infamous
day last fall when he wore a
different Georgia uniform
He expects 5.000 screaming
orange-clad Clemson fans to
be riding him over his
pigskin performance.
Belue was with the team
last week when Georgia
defeated the Tigers for the
second straight time this
season, 11-10. And now that
he is back in center field, he
is playing his best baseball
of the season.
‘T've played there (center
field) for the last seven
years — four in high school
and three in college,” Belue
said, "I was real uneasy in
right field.”
Belue's happiness on
defense carries over to his
offense. He has suddenly
come out of nowhere to lead
the team in hitting with a
.429 average. His name,
though, will not appear in the
Southeastern Conference
statistics because he has not
had the required 60 plate
appearances (two at bats
per game).
His bat also keyed two of
Georgia's weekend wins.
Saturday, in the first game
of the double header, Belue
lined a three-run triple over
the Vandy center fielder's
head -to break a 2-2 sixth
inning deadlock for a 5-2 win.
Belue then blasted two home
runs — one a three-run shot
— to account for half of
Georgia's runs in Sunday’s 8-
7 win.
Although he didn't figure
directly into the outcome of
Saturday’s second game,
Belue did go 3-for-4 at the
plate and scored one run in
the 7-6 extra-inning win.
In that second game, the
Dogs opened up a 4-0 lead in
the fourth inning. Vandy cut
the lead to one in the next
inning by scoring three runs,
two on a two-run homer.
The Commodores even
tually tied it at 6-6 in the
seventh to send the game
into extra innings
Georgia won it in the
eighth when Jeff LeRiger
scored from second base on
an error by the Vandy
second baseman who threw
the ball away attempting a
double play that would have
ended the inning.
Sunday, on the other hand,
was a different story. The
Dogs had to play comeback
all afternoon before winning
the game in the ninth. Vandy
opened a 3-0 lead after three
innings, but Belue tied it in
the bottom of the sixth with a
three-run blast over the
scoreboard in right field. It
was Belue’s first homer of
the season.
Vandy pushed four runs
across in its half of the
eighth to go up 7-3.
Georgia cut it to 7-5 on
Belue’s solo blast and David
Jackson’s one-run single.
That set up the Dogs' last
inning three-run rally to win
it 8-7 Again it was a Jackson
single that scored the win
ning run.
