why he did so well He's a

Miller completed his
sweep Monday when he
teamed with Ola Malmqvist
to beat Frey and'Tom Foster
6-4,6-1 to capture the doubles
title for the 13th consecutive
year. Miller is the first
freshman ever to win a
doubles title at the GIC.
Once again, the Bulldogs
dominated the tournament
which consisted of teams
from Georgia Tech, Emory,
Georgia Southern and
Georgia State.
Both the singles and
doubles semi-finals were
comprised entirely of
Georgia players as Frey
beat George Bezecny 6-4,4-6,
6-1 and Miller beat Tom
Foster 6-2, 6-2 in singles
action. In doubles, Miller
and Malmqvist defeated
Lloyd and Bezecny and Frey
and Foster beat Kip Tumage
and Lane Curlee.
While Magill was pleased
with the overall showing of
the Bulldogs, he has to be
happy with the showing of
the newcomers in the
tournament
Three of the four semi
finalists in singles were
freshmen and five of the
eight contestants in the
doubles semi-finals are in
their first year at Georgia.
“Of course I'm happy with
(the new players’ effort),”
Magill said, "but I really
wasn't surprised that they
did so well. They've been
playing well all year."
The doubles final saw a
team which has been red-hot
over the past three weeks
(Foster and Frey) fall to the
favorites (Miller and
Malmqvist) in a match that
Magill termed "antl-
climactic."
"It was a pretty listless
final," Magill said. "I think
the guys were a little slow
after three days of tour
nament action. Overall,
though, our doubles played
well in the tournament.”
While the tournament did
little more than prove
Georgia's superiority in
college tennis in the state
once again, it also demon
strated a point that Magill
has been trying to make all
season long: the depth of this
year’s team.
"Our players are so
close," Magill said, “we
could play this tournament
again next week and have
three new champions. This
(the semi-finals) was
Deane’s first victory over
George, and Allen just
played a great match
against Tom."
