Both the captivating style
of play and the personality of
Georgia golfer Mitzi Edge
attracts people to her like a
magnet. This returning All-
America is ranked fourth in
the nation, reflecting
women's golf Coach Liz
Murphey's belief that she is
a real winner.
"Mitzi is self-confident
and a leader,” Murphey
says, "and certainly a thrill
to watch," And Edge's
confident style on the
greens, which she herself
terms as “aggressive,"
gives her a definite boost in
tournament play.
Edge's career got its start
at home in Augusta, riding
around with her dad in his
golf cart. She eventually got
a chance to hit a few balls
and fell in love with the
sport
Her dad sawed off a set of
clubs for Edge and ever
since then, golf courses have
been her second home. "My
dad gives me confidence in
my playing and is definitely
the biggest influence on my
game," Edge says. "He
believes in me and supports
me, but sometimes its hard
to go home from the course,
after playing with him for
several hours, and forget
about golf for awhile."
The Georgia women's golf
team, ranked fifth in the
nation, was a heartbreaking
runner-up at last year’s
Association of In-
Basketball recruiting outlook uncertain
tercollegiate Athletics for
Women Nationals, losing by
only three strokes to Florida
State. This was a tremen
dous disappointment for the
team, but Edge feels sure
that the Lady Bulldogs will
be in top form when the
nationals roll around again.
"It would have been a
dream come true if we had
won," she says, "but it just
wasn't meant to be. They
(FSU) beat us in a tough
match. And for quite a while
after we lost the nationals,
all we wanted to do was to
beat Florida State."
This year's tournament
will be held June 16-19 at the
Ohio State course instead of
in Athens. Edge doesn't see
any disadvantage for her in
the switch, as she terms the
Columbus, Ohio course as
one of her favorites, ex
cluding Athens.
But what is it going to take
to win nationals this year
when Georgia will be
competing against such
tough competitors as
number one-ranked Florida
State and number three
Southern Methodist
University? Both Edge and
Murphey hint at a consistent
spring season, which in past
years has almost become a
tradition. In 1981, the Lady
Bulldogs won 4-of-8 spring
tournaments and captured 1
second or third in the
remaining four. Edge says
that the team's peak “needs
to come right at nationals."
But all these high
aspirations boil down to one
word — practice. Edge
spends several hours a day
hitting balls and getting in
some rounds, fine-tuning her
game so everything will flow
when tournament time rolls
around Edge has a unique
philosophy for preparing for
an upcoming tournament.
“I work really hard until a
few days prior to the tour
nament and then I just take
it easy until tee-off time,"
Edge says. “I feel that too
much practicing will wear
you down, so instead I
concentrate on my short
game then, mainly chipping
and putting ”
Because Edge loves to be
challenged, she claims:
“There is no golf shot that
scares me. I’m personally
looking forward to every
tournament coming up,
especially since each one I
play is the last one of my
collegiate career ”
But when Edge's golf
career at Georgia ends this
June, what will the future
hold for her? As of right now,
she is still debating two
possibilities: either finishing
her final year of classes as a
therapeutic recreation
major or trying to qualify for
her card to compete on the
Ladies Professional Golf
Association tour.
Murphey is positive about
Edge's chances on the cir
cuit, saying she's got what it
takes for the pros, "Golf is
my main interest right
now,"
But an education is also
important to her, with
possible aims of working
with the handicapped and
disabled. In the distant
future, Edge secs herself
possibly instructing people
with a high level of golf skill
and even owning her own
golf course.
Durham hasn’t given up on Walker,
says Hartry will sign with Dogs today

Durham: Hartry is coming
By CHARLES AARON
Rrd and Black Staff Writer
Georgia Bulldog
basketball recruiting has
been in a long holding pat
tern lately, and there has
been cautious discussion
about who Coach Hugh
Durham will sign. Today is
the first day colleges can
sign high school basketball
recruits.
Donald Hartry, a high
school All-America from
Milledgeville’s Baldwin
High School, is the only
player to verbally commit to
Georgia.
Although the Georgia
coach would not disclose the
names of any new players he
is pursuing, he did confirm
that the Dogs are still trying
to pry Crawford County’s
Kenny Walker away from
Kentucky. Walker com
mitted to the Wildcats back
in late March, but Durham
has contended all along that
Joe B. Hall doesn't have him
locked away yet.
Walker is considered to be
the top player in the state,
and was named to either
first or second team All-
America in several national
publications.
At 6-foot-8, Walker has
expressed his desire to play
forward at whatever school
he attends, while Georgia’s
needs are clearly at the
center position. Walker has
been quoted as saying that
he did not want to come to
Georgia because he feared a
switch to 1 center, much like
Terry Fair, himself a
natural forward.
Durham's taciturn outlook
has certainly been consistent
since the Dogs ended their
season in the fine's of the
National Invitational
Tournament. "We've got one
committed; Hartry is
coming," Durham said.
“But I won't talk about
anybody else until we get
them."
The worry among Georgia
followers is that Walker will
stay with Kentucky and
spurn the Bulldogs. Durham
won’t say how good his
chances of getting Walker
are, but the relative success
of this year’s recruiting
effort rides heavily on his
decision. "If we don’t sign
Walker we’ll be disap
pointed," Durham said.
The signing of Hartry may
have filled a spot that has
troubled the Dogs for the
past two seasons — point
guard Hartry is a natural 6-
foot-2 point guard, while
Vern Fleming has ad
mittedly played out of
position at the point for two
seasons.
Of course, Durham won't
proclaim him as any kind of
savior, but Hartry will
definitely make an impact.
"We can’t promise him a
starting spot, but we think
he's a quality player,"
Durham said. “How much
he plays will depend on
him."
The Georgia women’s golf
team must wait until next
year to defend its title in the
Lady Buckeye Invitational
Six inches of unseasonal
snow fell in Columbus, Ohio
this past weekend, forcing
the team to return to Athens
early Saturday morning.
The tournament will not be
made up, but has been
rescheduled for next year.

Vols excited about Dickey
(UPI) — Tennessee, which had its
problems at quarterback last fall, is
getting excited about sophomore
Daryl Dickey, son of former Ten
nessee and Florida Coach Doug
Dickey.
In a recent game-type scrimmage,
young Dickey ran for three touch
downs and passed for two others
But Vols Coach Johnny Majors says
its too early to say Dickey will be
Tennessee’s No. 1 quarterback next
fall. "Our quarterbacking is way too
erratic,” Majors insists. "The job is
wide open "
North Carolina is the early favorite
to supplant Clemson as Atlantic Coast
Conference football champion next
fall
The Tar Heels, who posted a 10-2
record last season when they lost by
two points to national champion
Clemson and beat Arkansas in the
Gator Bowl, return 15 starters and 28
other lettermen
"The strength of our team should be
our experience," says North Carolina
Coach Dick Crum. "We have an ex
cellent senior class, which should
provide us with excellent leadership
We were very young a year ago and
should be more mature this fall '
The Atlanta Falcons will be looking
for defensive help in the NFL college
draft, which takes place April 27-28
But general manager Eddie
l,eBaron says the Falcons, who pick
ninth, won't let that influence them in
the first round.
“It depends on who is available
after the teams in front of us make
their moves," said LeBaron “If the
next best available pick is an of
fensive player, that’s the way we’ll
go."
Coach Leeman Bennett doesn't feel
the Falcons need much in the way of
new help to be a winner in 1982, even
though they dropped from 12-4 in 1980
to 7-9 in 1981.
"It’s a thin line between losing and
winning," says Bennett. "Two years
ago we played injury-free, whereas
injuries hampered us last season ’’
But Tampa Bay Coach John McKay
says no NFL team can afford to stand
pat
"This league is so balanced that no
team can go through the motions and
win a division championship
anymore,” says McKay. "We learned
that lesson when we won the title in
1979 and finished fourth the next
year "
