Lady Vols blitz Georgia
in battle for SEC East lead
By KEVIN PROCTER
IM a no Black dull
Hot shooting Tennessee humbled the
Lady Bulldogs. 74-54, at the Coliseum
Sunday, ending an 11-game Georgia
winning streak
2,282 fans saw the Lady Vols break
open a close game by shooting 67
percent from the field in the second
half
All-America Mary Ostrowski con
nected on five of six from the floor for
the Lady Vols and led all scorers with 15
points Tanya Haave added 14 points,
and senior sharpshooter I>ea Henry
chipped in 13, all in the second half
Henry kept the Lady Dogs, who led
27 26 at halftime, subdued by con
sistently making 20-foot jumpers as the
clock waned at the close of the game
The Lady Vols scored two quick
baskets to start the second half and
began to pull away when Karen Morton
swished two hook shots giving Ten
nessee a 3^33 lead
Georgia coach Andy Landers
remembers telling his team, at the half,
to cut off Tennessee's inside game
We took them out of their offense in
the first half, and we were going to
concentrate on continuing that in the
second half,” Landers said. “I’m
disappointed that we didn't."
Georgia's lapse on defense led to poor
shot selection providing Tennessee with
easy fast breaks including Ostrowski's
layup giving the Lady Vols a 10-point
bulge, 45-35, with 12 minutes to go
Freshman Teresa Edwards, who led
the Lady Dogs with 14 points, kept
Georgia in the game with two steals
leading to layups, but Henry's
dependable bombs kept the Lady Dog's
from making a serious run at the game
Georgia did manage to close the gap
to nine points, 55-46, with 5:54
remaining on Janet Harris’ 3-point
play, but that was the closest the Lady
Dogs could get
The victory gives the Lady Vols an
early lead in the Southeastern Con
ference Eastern Division. For Georgia,
according to Harris, it could be a tur
ning point in the season.
"We can either go up or down,”
Harris said. “I don't think it was a bad
loss, and I'm going to keep my head
up."
Landers credited the Tennessee win
to Henry's place and some easy shots
that Georgia missed
"Henry is a senior but we didn’t
expect her to shoot that well," Landers
said, "and we missed some costly
layups off of rebounds ”
Georgia did outrebound the Lady
Vols, 33-30, but Tennessee held Harris
to nine points, 11 under her average.
Despite the disappointing setback,
the I^ady Dogs kept an optimistic
outlook on their future
"We hate to lose an SEC game,”
Edwards said, “and even though they
out played us, I think we re a better
team "
“We’ll meet again (February 12 in
Knoxville),” Harris said, “and this
time, we’ll beat them "

Georgia's men’s swim team looks to
continue its winning ways against
South Carolina tonight in Columbia.
The Bulldogs, fresh off a 59-54 triumph
over Clemson, are currently 3-2.
In what coach Pete Scholle termed
“a real good collegiate swim meet,"
Georgia’s 400-yard freestyle relay
team of Patrick Keating, Ignacio
Ibarguen, Sten Williamson, and
Ramon Lavin outswam Clemson’s
relay team 3:07.19 to 3:08.69 to cum a
54-52 deficit into a 59-54 victory.
Top individual performances for
Georgia included Keating, Lars Sohr,
Cliff Van Welde, and Bill Sutton.
Keating won the 50- and 100-yard
freestyle events while Sohr won the
200-yard individual medley and Van
Welde won the 200-yard backstroke.
Sutton gave the Dogs a big lift by
finishing second in three-meter diving.
Against South Carolina, the Dogs
will again need a top-notch per
formance to win.

This in/ormation has been submitted

how warm to make the water in Stegeman Pool, as he
returned eight All-Americans and added three outstanding
freshmen to his 17-girl squad.
However, Bauerle and his Lady Dogs, now 2-2 after
Saturday's 76-73 loss to Clemson, did not count on the Lady
Tigers coming out fighting to avenge last year's 87-60 loss to
Georgia.
Kathleen Doolan was one of the bright spots for Georgia as
she captured top honors in the 50-yard butterfly and the 50-
yard freestyle events. Lisa Geiger added two victories of her
own, winning first place in the 200-yard breastroke and the
20O-yard Individual Medley.
Bauerle also cited juniors Jody Stetson and Alison Orr for
"swimming exceptionally well.”
“Jody won in the 100-yard freestyle and Alison won the 100-
yard Individual Medley,” Bauerle said, "two wins that we
really needed to stay close in the meet . "
The Lady Dogs are on the road again today, as they travel
to Columbia to meet the South Carolina Lady Gamecocks.
