Georgia combined an unrelenting
defense and an unfailing inside game to
dominate Mississippi State 75-59 before
a crowd of 5,642 in the Coliseum
Monday night.
Fellow frontcourters Terry Fair and
James Banks scored 17 and 21 points
respectively while Vern Fleming
rounded out a balanced attack with 20.
Mississippi State's Jeff Malone, high
school teammate of Georgia's Fair led
all scorers with 25.
It was the Bulldog defense, however,
that continued to play exceptionally,
forcing 16 turnovers and making 10
steals.
“Our defense has been good,” coach
Hugh Durham said after the game.
“It’s a credit to our team to be able to
change defenses. It’s not that our
defenses are tricky, but the players
have been able to make changes out on
the floor. Sometimes that throws the
other team otf balance. "
Georgia continually fed the ball in
side to Fair and Banks on offense. And
the Bulldogs totally dominated the
boards, outrebounding State 36-22.
"We rebounded well, especially on
some missed free throws," Durham
said. “It’s bad we missed the free
throws, but it's good we got the rebound
and put it back in, especially Banks."
The Dogs blew open a 19-19 deadlock
with 7:25 remaining in the first half by
outscoring the Maroons 20-7 to close the
half with a comfortable 39-26 lead.
Despite the lead, Durham was not
sure of his coaching decisions in the
first half.
"We probably didn't substitute
enough in the first half,” Durham said,
"but I didn't want to break up a unit
that was going well.”
Mississippi State posed no serious
threat in the second half as Georgia
built a lead of as much as 19 points at 68
49 with 2:16 to go in the game
The Bulldogs shot 55 percent from the
field against the Maroons and Durham
said this was the major factor which
enabled his team to overcome the
constantly-changing defenses of
Mississippi State.
“We shot the ball a little better
tonight,” Durham said "Any time you
shoot the ball well, it makes it look like
you’re adjusting well (to the defense).”
Durham also said he was pleased
with the leadership Fair, Banks and
Fleming have shown in the recent surge
by the Bulldogs.
"Our three returning starters carried
us in scoring tonight," Durham said.
"We need them to lead us and they've
done that lately.”
One of the keys to beating Mississippi
State is containing All SEC guard Jeff
Malone and the Bulldogs "held" the
senior to 25 points.
“I thought we contained Malone,"
Durham said. "You’re not going to stop
him but you can try to contain him and
hold him down below 30."
While the play of Georgia's frontcourt
was the indomitable force against the
Maroons, Saturday's upset over then
lOth-ranked Alabama showcased the
prowess of the Bulldog backcourt.
Freshman Donald Hartry entered the
game in the second half for the slum
ping Gerald Crosby, Hartry responded
by hitting on five of six shots from the
field in the second half and seven of
nine for the game, mostly from long
range The key bucket was a 22-footer
with 11 seconds to go which gave the
Bulldogs a 6644 lead
Alabama had a chance to send the
game into overtime, but a pass from
Whatley to center Bobby Lee Hurt was
intercepted by Vern Fleming w ith one
second remaining to seal the victory
Fleming was the leading scorer for
Georgia with 21 in the Dogs' 67-64 win
Terry Fair had 15 points, seven
rebounds and was six for seven from
the floor
The Bulldogs are now 12-2 overall
(best in the SEC) and 3-2 in the con
ference
"We have a good shot at it (the
Southeastern Conference eham
pionship) right now," Fair said. "All
the teams just have very good players.
“A lot of people counted us out,” Fair
said. "But we know what we are
capable of doing.
“Last year everybody wasn't really
trusting each other,” Fair said. "This
yearwe’rec'aser."
After taking today off to recuperate
from the two tough games in three
days, the Bulldogs will begin
preparation for Saturday's matchup
with Auburn.
"We'll try to rest up tomorrow,"
Durham said alter last night's victory,
"and then we'll start thinking about
Auburn. That's going to be a rough
game and we need to be ready for it."
