Prof requests jury trial
A University professor Tuesday requested a jury trial in
his case of solicitation of sodomy and filed a motion to
dismiss the case, claiming he was charged under an
unconstitutional statute
State Court Judge Grady Pittard set the trial date at
May 27
The professor's attorney. Ed Tolley, said the statute
forbidding solicitation of sodomy is "vague, violates free
speech and is capable of arbitrary application
"(My client) did not do any affirmative act." Tolley
said
Tolley said he must file the motion within to days to the
county solicitor, who will have five days to respond He
said Pittard probably would rule on the constitutionality
of the statute in about two weeks
The professor was arrested in the University's Main
Library March 6 .

In response to the widespread famine in Ethiopia, mem
bers of the University's African Student Union are con
tributing money to the Ethiopian Family Relief Fund
ASU President Wilfred Omoloh said the S170 collected will
go to the Red Cross, who in turn will buy food for the starvin
in Africa
Omoloh. a native of Africa, came to the University three
years ago and is studying for a masters degree in food
sciences He said he understands the desperate situation in
Africa, so the Union has plans to set up a committee to
continue to elicit donations for this cause As for now, he said
about 50 of the Union's members have given as much money
as possible, and he is enthusiastic about the group's con
tributions
Ishmael Chigumira, a graduate student in electrical
engineering and ASU member, said the group began
collecting money last March because "the need (for famine
relief) was expressed and it was found to be very pressing "
"The members began talking about it and saying let's do
something about it," he said
In addition to their philanthropic efforts, the group plans to
host the annual African Night” this Saturday from 6pm
until 10 30 p m There will be a half hour of exhibits from
different countries from 6 to 6:30 pm, followed by a dinner
featuring various African dishes at the Baptist Student
Center from 6 30 to 7:30 p m
The group will then move to Memorial Hall Ballroom for
three hours of traditional dancing. African music and slide
