University horticulture majors can soon earn college
credit and funds for tuition through work at an Atlanta
nursery that is trying to spur interest in horticulture.
Pike Nurseries is taking applications now to give students
a chance to receive up to five hours of University credit along
with total college tuition money following the completion of
their freshman year.
Pete Pike, president of Pike Nurseries, said his new
tuition/scholarship program will encourage more
enrollment in the University's College of Agriculture for
horticulture majors
We're having a hard time getting college graduates to fill
the positions that we have." Pike said. "The University is not
putting out enough horticulture students ”
Pike said the main reason for his new program is to aid
students having difficulty paying for their college education,
and he hopes this will increase enrollment.
"1 knew that the government has cut down on aid," Pike
said "It could have a tremendous impact on increasing the
enrollment in the College of Agriculture."
Pike said his nursery will award 10 scholarships the first

As secretary of the ap
propriations committee,
state legislator Bob Argo, D-
Athens. plays a vital part in
passing any legislation to aid
the poor. Gill said.
"In establishing ap
propriations, debate isn’t
open to the public," Gill said
"In essence, we do not have
a sunshine law in the
Georgiu legislature "
When an appropriation
debate arises, the committee
goes into a closed session.
“When they come down
the vote is unanimous,” he
said. "You never know who
originally voted for what ."
laical lobbyists should talk
to their legislators and keep
them informed. Gill said.
Gill traveled from Atlanta

year, with additional scholarships added in the future.
"Selection is based on academic qualifications, financial
need and expressed interest in a career in horticulture," he
said. "Selection of applicants will be made by a three-
member committee. ”
The student will work spring quarter at a Pike's location,
Pike said The student then returns to the University summer
or fall quarter and will receive tuition scholarships through
winter quarter.
Pike said if other companies would establish programs like
his, they will find the type of graduates they need for their
companies
"I think as larger companies are growing; they have to
contribute to some of these educational programs to get the
graduates they want," he said.
Louis Boyd, coordinator of sponsored programs for the
College of Agriculture, said Pike's program will provide
money for school and work experience
"II certainly would provide a great financial opportunity
for students to go to school and get some assistance during
this time," Boyd said.
Boyd said the program will also benefit Pike by letting him
meet with the students he may hire after graduation.
“It would enable him to have contact with many students
by the time they graduate," Boyd said. "That, too, provides
employment opportunity for the students "
