The Ked and Black
By Chip Towers

Move over Fridge, here eomes the Kerry
Hiawatha Berry, that is. The 6-2, 245-pound de
fensive guard from Winder has been moved
temporarily at least, to fullback for the Ken-
tueky game.
With injuries to tailback Tim Worley (knee -
out for season! and fullback Keith Henderson
knee three weeks), the once deep running
back position has grown considerably thinner
Listed as the No 3 tandem on early season
depth charts, Kevin and Randy Jackson will pick
up some of the slack But head coach Vince
Dooley said that he’s still uncomfortable with the
depth at the position.
"We moved (Berry) there, because of the (in
jury) problems we’ve had in the backfield "
Dooley said. “He played some fullback in high
school so we think he can draw on that experi
ence We want to move him into the offensive
line eventually because of depth problems there
and because of better play on the defensive
line.
With the re-emergence of a healthy Henrv
Harris at one guard and the recovery from a foot
■ njury of Larry Brown at the other. Berry’s role
has become less important defensively
Unfortunately, depth on the offensive line is
not as good as that of the defense. Scott Adams

a 6-6, 255-pound reserve guard and tackle has
been demoted to scout team because of discipli
nary problems and will not (ravel to Lexington
this weekend. He will remain with the scout
team indefinitely. Also demoted for disciplinary
reasons were reserve tight end Jim Hickey and
linebacker Steve Boswell
Boswell, who has started every game this
season at the Will linebacker position, will make
the trip but will not start. Sophomore Terrie
Webster will get the call in Boswell's absence
and play most of the game Scout team guard
Rob Wainwright will travel in Adams' absence.
Hickey will play on the scout team for one week.
Asked why Boswell made the trip and the
other two didn't Dooley said Boswell's infraction
was less severe and not related.
Dooley would not elaborate on the details of
the incidents leading to disciplinary action
Berry's is not the only new face in the back-
he d.as flanker Fred lane has been working at
tailback and will likely see a little action at the
position this weekend Lane, who is listed at No.
2 for Saturday's game, played running back at
Columbia High School in Decatur. Dooley said
the 5-10, 166-pound senior has picked up the run
ning game well but still needs work on the
passing plays. *
If and when lane moves to tailback, Cassius
Osborn will move to flanker while redshirt soph-
stay at split end. Nate
t.eorgia quarterback James Jackson threw for 133 yards and rushed for
75 in a 36*16 win over Vanderbilt last Saturday. Jackson is on pace to

on, but that he’s happy where he is. I'm settled
at receiver and I want it to stay that way " he
said with a smile, "but if they need it, I'll help "
Dooley said Tuesday that he’d met with AWOL
cornerback Doug Samuel and that while he
would remain on scholarship and in school he
would not participate on the team for the rest of
the season. Dooley did say, however, he would
reevaluate Samuel's status prior to spring prac
tice next year.
Hosea McCrary will split time with Will Jones
at roverback against Kentucky while John Little
will remain at safety . Dooley said that along
with a tough defense and an offense which is 100
percent healthy for the first time this season
Kentucky would bring one of the best kickers in
the conference to the field Saturday. "With the
exception of their field goal kicker (Joe
Worley)," Dooley said, “we re as even as thev
get”
He was referring to the two team’s points-per-
game averages: Georgia 26, Opponent 19; Ken
tucky 25, Opponent 18 Worley, however, is nine
for 11 in the field goal department while

Not only is Bulldog quarterback
James Jackson rising above every
one's expectations, but he’s on pace
to shatter two long-standing school
records.
Jackson, ranked third among the
nation's passers, has thrown for l,- t
131 yards and rushed for 257 in the*
first six games as he chases
Georgia legends Zeke Bratkowski
and Frank Sinkwich.
Quarterback Bratkowski starred
for the Bulldogs from 1951 to 1953,
setting 10 school passing marks, be
fore being drafted by the Chicago
Bears. In 1952, he passed for a
Georgia record 1,824 yards, surpas
sing his 1951 total of 1,578.
Only two Bulldog quarterbacks
have challenged that mark in the
last 32 years and both fell more than
200 yards short. Mike Cavan passed
for 1,619 yards in 1968 and Buck
Belue threw for 1,603 in 1981.
At his present pace, Jackson
would become the first Georgia
passer to break the 2,000-yard bar
rier. His projected total for 11 reg
ular-season games is 2,074 yards.
An older and equally significant
record should also come Jackson's
way — halfback Frank Sinkwich's
2,187 yards of total offense in one
season
Sinkwich captured the Heisman
Trophy in 1942 when he set the re
cord to cap a great college career.
More than forty years after his last
game, Sinkwich still holds six re
cords and is arguably the greatest
Bulldog ever.
Flatfoot Frankie was an All-
American twice in his three years
and led Georgia to a 40-26 rout in
their first bowl game, the 1942
Orange Bowl. Many consider that
1941 squad to be the best in school
history. The Detroit Lions drafted
Sinkwich in 1943.
Only Herschel Walker in 1981
came within 400 yards of Sinkwich’s
mark. Walker finished with 1,891
yards. Sinkwich totalled 1,816 yards
in 1941.
Over a full season, Jackson would
obliterate Sinkwich's mark. He is on
pace to gain 2,545 yards.
