„ 2! a u ourS'even-roller^-derby addict, I do
ar>out how our games are evolving
or that reason, I offer a list of things I don’t want
to see anymore
1 hank nie in the morning
I don’t want to see another player sign a I'ive-
. far contract. then demand to renegotiate after a
kreat * ,rst season. You sign it, you live with it Isn't
it tunny how players hit the roof if an owner dares
yur suggest a pay cut after an off year 9 “A con
tract s a contract," they scream.
I don’t want to hear another coach or player
complain about the "media crush." The media gets
blamed for everything these days. Even if I’m not
covering the game, I’m tired of it.
• I don’t want to see another announcer narrate
the instant replay. "So there’s Marino back to pass,
Uuper takes ten steps down, then cuts to the side
lines and Marino delivers the pass." Thanks, but
Hay Charles I’m not.
• I don’t want to see another guy labeled a
legend" just because he coached football for a
living. You know who I mean.
• 1 don’t want to see any more articles hyping the
arrival of the annual G-Day spring football game.
This game is an exhibition and should lie treated as
such. Nobody remembers it when the real season
starts.
• I don’t want to hear another player who just got
traded say he's "happy that somebody wants me.’’
Be realistic; you got dumped for a bag of practice
balls and a couple rolls of tape
• 1 don’t want to hear another owner of a last-place
team complain that the fans aren't supporting his
team What if you take your shirts to a cleaner and
he keeps ruining them 9 Are you going to keep going
there? People who continuously shell out their pay
check to support losers aren't good fans, they’re
stupid fans.
• I don’t want to read another story about a guy
who went to a baseball fantasy camp. Some fanta
sies are worth paying $2,000 a week for. but chasing
ground balls with potbellied has-beens isn't one of
them.

• I don’t want to see any more anti-drug advertise
ments I don't condone drugs at all, but it seems like
no one ever took cocaine liefore Len Bias.
• I don't want to see another player insist that a
drug test is an invasion of privacy. You have your
own views, I’m sure.
• I don't want to see another baseball announcer
second guess an umpire's strike zone from the cen-
terfield camera view . That shot never has and never
will be perfectly lined up with home plate
• I don't want to see the ceremonial first pitch
thrown ever again.
• I don’t want to see another sportswriter compare
a team or player to Rodney Dangerfieid because
they "get no respect." That may have been funny
once Maybe.
• 1 don’t want to see any more receivers run that
two-inch squareout pattern, catch the ball and step
out of bounds easily the most boring play in foot
ball
• I don’t want to see a player begin a discussion of
his team’s strategy with: "We're just gonna go out
there and ." We didn't think you could win while sit
ting in the locker-room whirlpool
• I don’t want to see or hear anymore about
Reggie Jackson being "Mr. October."
• I don't want to see any more hunting, fishing or
environmental articles in Sports Illustrated Great
fun that they may be. those aren’t sports
• I don’t want to see another hockey player pin the
puck on the boards with his skate and wait for the
ref to call a faceoff.
• I don’t want to see another writer say that a
team "got a kick" out of their kicker's game-win
ning field goal Does anyone actually think this is
clever?
I mean that phrase, not this column.

Sophomore transfer Boytim
leads netters at Rider-Rolex
By Lori C lark
llrri and Hlat-k AnUlanl Sport* Editor
John Boytim has made a lasting
impression on NCAA tennis offi
cials.
Coming off seven rounds of com
petition at the Southern Collegiates
tournament two weeks ago where he
won the championship, the sopho
more transfer from Texas cohsted
to three straight victories at the
Rider-Rolex tournament last
weekend before bowing to the
second seed
His fall season performance has
earned him a wild-card bid to the
Volvo All-American tournament, an
elite field of 32 singles players and
16 doubles teams that are consid
ered to be the top players in the na
tion for the fall season.
Philip Johnson. Trey Carter and
Stephen Enochs had already been
invited.
Boytim defeated Arkansas' Simon
Robinson, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round
of the Rider-Rolex, then downed
Cary Cohenour of Tennessee, 7-6, 4-
6, 6-4. In the third round. Boytim
upset eighth seed Casey Merickel of
Minnesota, 6-1, 6-4
Fatigue from the marathon of
matches took its toll in the quar
terfinals. Boytim fell to second-
seeded Ville Jansson of Northeast
Louisiana, 6-3, 6-2.
Associate coach Manuel Diaz said
Boytim has continued to impress ev
eryone fall quarter
"John has continued to improve,"
Diaz said. "He’s gotten better each
match. It's just unfortunate that he
ran into a hot player (Jansson). He
had played so many good matches,
singles and doubles, in a row that it
took a toll on him. I would love to
see him play Ville fresh."
Diaz said probably the biggest
surprise of the tournament was ju
nior Phillip Roberts' performance.
Roberts, who played in the No. 6 po
sition last year, lost in the first
round to Southwest Louisiana's
Ashley Rhoney, 6-0, 6-2 but came
back in the consolation round to re
cord four impressive victories. His
victims in the first two rounds were
Northeast Louisiana's Piero La
Gioia and Florida State's Paul
Haarhuig.
Then came the biggest upset of
the tournament Roberts scored a
straight-set victory over fifth-
seeded Shelby Cannon of Tennessee,
7-5, 6-2. A win over 1986 NCAA sin
gles qualifier Tom Goles of Ten
nessee sent Roberts to the
consolation semifinals, where he
lost to Southwest Louisiana's Brett
Garnett.
Freshman Jim Childs lost to
Southwest Louisiana's Paul Reekie
in the first round, 6-1. 7-5. In the
consolation matches, he upset
Chuck Merzbacher of Minnesota. 6-
3, 7-5 and defeated Rhoney and
Chris Greer of Trinity before losing
Phillip Roberts
to Felix Barrientos of LSU, 6-2. 6-4.
T.J Middleton, a sophomore, fell
to Mathias Olsson of Minnesota. 6-2,
6-1 He stomped SMU’s Paul Coyles.
6-16-0 and fell to Garnett, 6-1. 7-5 in
the consolation round.
In doubles, both teams lost in the
quarterfinals Roberts-Childs lost to
top-seeded Royce Deppe-Charles
Beckman of Texas, 6-1. 6-3 and-
Boytim-Middleton fell to Jansson-
Sean Cole of Northeast Louisiana
