"Oh, yeaaaaah? ... Your mother Non-singing canaries have to take wood shop
lives in an Army boot!"
Giants to seize Athens tonight
By Julie Carey
Kfd and Mark Kntertainmrnl Kditrrr
They might be pizza delivery boys, they might be lu
natics; they are They Might Be Giants.
Their unusual sound is incomparable to any single
group, but Sparks, Beat Farmers and LMNOP cer
tainly come to mind as well as countless other groups
when listening to their self-titled debut album.
The lanky duo, John Flansburgh and John Linnell
make an odd-looking pair Flansburgh sporting his
Buddy Holly hornrims and Linnell armed with his
accordian sound exactly like they look — like liberal
arts majors. And their lyrics are their poetry. .
The music is definitely pop. Bouncy accordian ac
companies synthesized sound effects, but the lyrics are
laced with sadness and a quirky sense of humor. Their
musical background is extensive and each song uses
melodies as allusions to classic forms of polka or folk
or coUntry, thus giving them an oddly familiar feeling.
It’s as if they reworked the chorus from the theme song
to “Green Acres" making it sound fresh yet still fa
miliar.
Full of fresh ideas, the twosome came up with the
idea for a dial-a-song number where they live. It is-the
perfect advertising ploy. People can listen to their
music and make booking reservations simply by di
aling their number
"John (Linnell) broke his wrist one day and we were
bored. So we turned up the vocals (you can’t under
stand them otherwise) and put song on the answering
’machine," Flansburgh said. "There's a new song every
day.”
Unfortunately, the number has been advertised
heavily so busy signals will frequently be the only
sound you’ll hear
With song titles such as "Rabid Child" and "Toddler
Hiway,”the answering machine idea isn’t the only orig
inal thought that this band has come up with. The lyric
sheet displays a small picture of men with bags on their
They Might Be Giants in a pensiv e pose
heads marching in a circle.
"That picture is from the Boy Scout Handbook. It’s
some sort of activity," Flansburgh said. "We just
thought it looked very tribal and strange.”
The band has an MTV video that is played now
mostly during the show “120 Minutes" proving that cre
ativity can be of good quality on a low budget.
“It must be doing pretty well, because some guy
came up to us today at a gas station and said, ‘I liked
your video,’ ” Flansburgh said in a somewhat bewil
dered tone.
This being their first tour and their first album
Flansburgh seems rather breathless and tired from the
rigors of all the travel He and Linnell trade baek and
forth with phone interviews and do their best to make
spre every town they go to knows when they are
coming and what they sound like.
They Might Be Giants will be playing at the Uptown
Lounge tonight.

Town and Gown presents likeable
interpretation of 6 Being Earnest’
By Maria Jenkins
Ht*d .mil Mack Waif Writer
The Town and Gown Players’
presentation of "The Importance
of Being Earnest,” a comedy by
Oscar Wilde, opened Friday night
at the Athens Community The
ater.
The play tells of the ridiculous
scrapes a young man, Jack Wor
thing, gets into as he tries to
marry a girl whose parents disap
prove of him. His progress is im
peded by the antics of his
lighthearted friend, Algernon
Moncheff.
The play is full of colorful char
acters and is included in the rep
ertoire of many community and
school theater companies The
Town and Gown Players come
close to infusing new life into the
well-known wisecracks. Much of
the show has the audience in
stitches. Although not every line
works, witty repartee abounds.
The characters take themselves
absolutely seriously while saying
outrageously silly things. In one
particularly good scene Jack’s
girlfriend Gwendolyn (Marie Hut
chins) and his ward Cecily (De-
irdre Allen) get the impression
that they are both engaged to Er
nest Worthing, an alias Jack has
been using as alternately his
brother and himself
The ensuing catfight over tea
combines the best of the reserved
English character with the spite
between two women who believe
each is the "other woman." The
verbal battle is sharp as the two
say the nastiest things they can
think of in the most restrained
manner.
The majority of the actors are
very good in their roles, but a few
stand out from the rest. Rod S B.
Landis excellently portrays Al
gernon as magnificently snobby
and insensitive. He is very confi
dent onstage, and his comic lines
are so understated as to seem
perfectly natural. He quickly wins
the audience over, stealing many
a scene with his snappy wit
Ronnie Glenn huffs imperiously
as Lady Bracknell. She is con
vincing as the protective
Mamma, sweeping into the room
always at just the wrong time (as
far as the sweethearts are con
cerned ».
Also quite funny are Verna
Long (Miss Prism) and Mike Da
vidson (Rev. Chasuble), tong re
minds one of an absent-minded
Sunday school teacher whose for
getfulness gets her into a lot of
trouble Davidson utilizes some
great facial expressions which
brighten every scene he is in.
One performance that seemed
somewhat lacking was that of
John Vance as Jack Worthing.
Vance has the role of the perfect
Englishman down pat Unfortu
nately though, this stiff perfection
is not all that humorous. Since
Jack is the main character, such
a problem affects the whole show.
Hopefully, this stiffness can be at
tributed to opening-night jitters
which will gradually take care of
themselves
The show's settings, designed
by Mike Brown, are simply el
egant They seem very English
and thus are perfect for these
very English characters. The cos
tumes are also excellent. De
signed by Harriet Tim. the ladies’
outefits are particularly gor
geous
Theater buffs and those just
looking for a good show will enjoy
this production. It is primarily
well-acted and smoothly pro
duced, and the dialogue will keep
you laughing.-
