Appreciate 9 don’t analyze Durham
So you've covered and followed Georgia basketball
for two years now and think you're starting to under
stand coach Hugh Durham.
You're wrong The more you're around him. the
less you know That’s part of the appeal.
You barge into his office one morning unan
nounced and half-expect him to boot you out.
Durham instead welcomes you to sit down. He
talks basketball and life for nearly two hours. He
thanks you for coming You miss two classes that
day and couldn't care less
You know that he's recruited and developed some
great athletes, so you figure he looks for basketball
talent first and writing ability second.
He straps a long wooden stick to your leg. saying
"This is what I tell kids when I recruit them: You
think you're good, don tcha** You’re a high school
star and people are telling you how great you are, so
you think you're something Ltt’s see how good you
are with this.' ”
You watch one of his practices and. unlike your
high school coach. Durham seldom yells or blows a
whistle in anger. He doesn't seem to doanything.
Later, you learn his silence is possible because
he’s so organized He's 19 times better than any high
school coach
You know he's a stick-up-for his players kind of
guy and expect him to join others and support the
paying of a minimal stipend to players.
He hates the idea, figures it won't deter ticket
scalping by players "They don't have to play bas
ketball for Georgia if they don’t want to.” he says.
‘‘Let them get a real job." •
You’ve seen the outside shot is a big part of his of
fense. so you anticipate he'll drool over the new
phree point field goal.
He doesn't like it, at least at this distance, and
says it hasn't achieved its goal of opening up the
lane for big men.
You presume he. as a defensive-minded coach.
will devise an elaborate perimeter defense to stop
the three point chippie.
He compares modern defenses to farming tactics,
predicting that people will "shoo a shooter towards
the basket, like you shoo chickens into a coop "
He continues to win. You trust he'll relish the
coaching credit he gets.
He deflects the topic towards football. "A perfect
example is the Atlanta Falcons.” he says. “For five
weeks. Dan Henning was a great coach Then when
there’s no W’s going up there, just L’s, all of a
sudden he can’t coach "
You imagine he loves carefully orchestrating his
team's offensive plays.
He says he’d like to see the 45-second shot clock
reduced to 30. but hints that fellow coaches won’t go
for it. “It’s just the connotation that if you play slow ,
you ain’t no good," he says. "If (Terry) Fair goes up
and takes it off the board, throws it out to (Vern>
Fleming, and he throws it down to (Dominique) Wil
kins who dunks it, then people say, ‘Hey, he’s got
good players. If he didn’t have good players, what
would he do?’ ”
You guess he knows his team and its tendencies
better than anyone.
He likens it to a waterfall. "If water runs down a
hill and hits a rock, it goes this way," he says. "If it
hits something else, it goes the other way ’’
You think his team is now rock-solid confident
about itself. •
He says his team is like Ben-Hur’s chariot, with a
wobbly wheel that could fall off at any time
You expect he'll endorse the new NCAA war cry.
Ban The Boosters.
He’s against it,and asks who could sell a recruit on
Georgia better than former players like Richard
Corhen.
Knowing he's been to two Final Fours, you assume
he'll prepare his team with the toughest schedule
possible.
He admits to scheduling "five dr six teams we had
a good chance of beatipg " He dismisses the take-
.your-knocks-early theory, saying "If we lost to some
tough teams, you’d say I was stupid."
After all that, you know he’ll always have his team
ready to play and.you'll enjoy watching.
You’re sure of that.

Frosh Thomas excels on beam
By l^ori Clark
Krd and Black Sport* Scrum Hr pur In
The year 1987 has brought
Georgia gymnastics coach Suzanne
Yoculan her entire 1986 squad back,
a third place national ranking and
two of the top recruits in the nation.
One of those recruits, Andrea
Thomas of Markham, Ontario.
Canada, has possibly better creden
tials than any other collegiate gym
nast in the country.
Among the many accomplish
ments of Thomas, an elite level
competitor for five years, are win
ning the all-around competition in
the 1984 Elite Canada and Olympic
trials, finishing third all-around at
the 1983 Commonwealth Games in
Australia and second all-around in
optionals at Pre-Worlds in Hungary
and finishing 14th all-around at the
1984 Olympic Games
Thomas said her biggest achieve
ment was winning (he silver medal
on the beam in the* 1983 pre-Olym
pics while future Olympic gold med
alist Mary Lou Ketton finished in
third place.
Yoculan compares Thomas to
sophomore Lucy Wener, another
former Olympic qualifier who won
\he 1986 NCAA Championships on
the uneven bars.
"When I saw Lucy on the bars
last year, I knew that she could
score the first 10.0 ever in the
Georgia Coliseum," Yoculan said.
"Now when I see Andrea. I know
she could do it on thd beam ”
For two years as a 15- and 16-
year-old. Thomas endured the hour-
long ride from home to the Earl
Haig-Claude Watson School for the
Arts, a school Thomas describes as
similar to the school in the movie
“Fame" but with sports classes in
stead of dancing.. . (|
She traveled this distance to

Andrea Thomas
the Xoces-Eaglcs club, another hour
bus ride from school, where she
practiced six hours a day. L
Her senior year. Thomas switched
clubs so she could attend her home
town school. She took eight months
off from gymnastics to rest and to
recover from a chronic shoulder in
jury before coming to Georgia
Thomas said the team atmo
sphere is different in college gym
nastics.
"The girls I used to train
with...we went to school together
and we knew each ether for years so
the friendships I developed with
them were really, really strong."
said Thomas. “It was easy to feel a
team atmosphere. When I came to
college, it was harder to get into a
team spirit with girls I haven’t
known for very long "
Thomas was recruited by
Georgia, UCLA, Utah and Okla
homa.
"I loved UCLA and Georgia,"
Thomas said. "The worst week of
my life was trying to decide which
to go to. It was so close. I think the
thing that finally made up my mind
was that UCLA was so much farther
away from home."
Yoculan said some people were
skeptical about recruiting Thomas
"Her shoulder problems are se
rious and chronic." Yoculan said.
"Some people would say, Why
would you recruit a girl with those
injuries?' If Andrea can go 9.7 on
beam, she's worth it. 1 It's the same
as with Lucy (who battles a recur
ring knee injury I: we thought all we
might get from Lucy is bars
"We’re not giving up on Andrea.
With constant rehabilitation, seeing
different doctors and our trainers
working on her. we’re hoping
maybe she ll get better "
Thomas' best event is the beam,
where she will be looked to this year
to provide consistency on what has
been Georgia's weakest event in re
cent years
"Her leadership on beam cer
tainly helps the team," Yoculan
said. “The first weeks of practice
whenever she did a beam routine,
everyone would stop to watch her,
Her concentration is so intent;
that's the way you have to be on
beam.”
Thomas competed in her first col
legiate meet Friday at Ohio State.
She scored 9.65 on the beam to tie
teammates Wener and Corrinne
Wright for first place, and led the
beam squad to a school record 37.55
score
"My goal is to be the NCAA
champion on the beam, but I'm not
going to put pressure on myself to
have to do that," Thomas said
Thomas will again be performing
the spectacular beam routine that
has gained her so much interna
tional recognition Friday in a home
meet against Radford, where she
will continue her quest to become
Georgia’s second national champion
