The University's Parking Serv
ices Director says parking problems
are here to stay at the University
until at least two more parking
decks are built.
James Tardy said planning funds
were requested for a North Campus
parking deck such as the one re-
cently completed on South Campus
at Myers Hall, but the estimated $3
million project hasn't yet received
approval, he said.
A minimum of two more parking
decks are needed to make the
parking situation on campus ideal,
Tardy said.
North Campus is the most - con
gested area on campus, with the
main library and Gilbert Health
Service contributing heavily to the
continuous traffic flow of students
and faculty, he said
“Over 60 percent of the classes
taught at the University are taught
on North Campus." Tardy said.
The problem isn’t that the 14,000
spaces available for parking aren’t
enough, but that “we’re all spoiled
and want to park as close as we can
to where we re going.’’ he said.
Students must consider parking
facilities and transportation «ys
terns available when scheduling
classes. Tardy said.
However, pay parking lots at the
University Bookstore and Tate Stu
dent Center, bus services and com
pletion of the 678-space parking
South Campus parking
deck on South Campus have alle
viated some student and faculty
complaints, he said.
“I have had less complaints this
year than ever before," Tardy said.
Although the University is ap
proaching adequacy in parking, he
said he expects construction on the
biological sciences complex and the
Georgia Museum of Art to take
away some parking space.
The bio-sciences complex, esti
mate^ to cost $30 million, is ex
pected to be built in the Fain Hall
area off East Campus Hoad. Tardy
said. This project alone will take up
at least 100 graduate and faculty
parking spaces during construction.
David Lunde, director of Campus
Planning, said a study of the impact
of the bio-sciences complex is being

ices is considering a project to
survey and develop an area off
River Road on the south end of
campus for parking spaces
On North Campus, a parking deck
near the psychology building, the vi
sual arts building or the Baptist Stu
dent Center would ease parking
problems without destroying many
trees and areas of historic value
and beauty. Tardy said.
A deck in any of these areas also
would help housing students in the
Russell, Creswell and Brumby hall
areas, but the bio-sciences complex
and the estimated $14 million
Georgia Museum of Art project will
probably take precedence in Uni
versity funding, he said
Lunde said Campus Planning also
is looking into adding more parking
spaces across the railroad tracks in
the commuter area on Thomas
Street and East Campus Road.
