Ugly George: featured in "Rate it X"
Hurry, hurry, hurry. Ladies and
gentlemen, come one, come all,
step right up and see wonders
you’ve never areamed of before.
Yes, you, too, can witness an in
terview with a baker who bakes
headless female torso cakes. YOU
can meet the “Hustler" cartoonist
who created Chester the Molester.
YOU can hear a pom store man
ager read aloud the instructions for
a life-sized, anatomically correct
female inflatable doll. And all
without leaving your seat.
But where, you eagerly ask.
These men and any others in
any way connected with pornog
raphy are the subjects of a 1986
documentary called “Rate it X.”
The film will be presented tonight
in the Tate Center Theater by the
Ideas and Issues division of the
University Union. One of its direc
tors, Paula de Koenigsberg, will
speak afterwards.
The film, co-directed by Lucy
Winer, contains interviews with
men who could be considered
sexist. The men range from bakers,
cartoonists and pom store man
agers to advertising executives and
Santa Clauses.

De Koenigsberg and Winer, self-
proclaimed feminists, interviewed
subjects who had been recom
mended by other feminists and
friends. They traveled to ten cities
to interview men those businesses
or advertisements that had elicited
complaints from women.
However, the film does not draw
conclusions. Instead, it merely pre
sents the material and lets the
viewer decide.
‘The film doesn’t take sides,”
Neil Thompson, head of research
and programming for University
Union’s Ideas and Issues Division,
said. “Instead, it is up to the indi-
ye
W.
vidual to decide for himself."
The film emerges as an amusing
sociological exploration of how
American men view women fifteen
ears after the beginning of the
omen’s Movement.
“I don’t want this to come across
as an attack on men, but the enter
tainment industry is male domi
nated and it is imporant to have
checks and balances," Laurre
Sincler, program advisor for Ideas
and Issues, said.
De Koenigsberg will discuss a
variety of topics after the film, in
cluding its technical aspects and
its impact on her life. She will also
Thompson said he expects “a
little bit of everything" from de
Koenigsberg.
Afterwards, there will be a re
ception in the Art Gallery. De Koe-
nigsberg will be present and the
public will have a chance to talk to
ner on a one on one basis.
This will be de Koenigsberg’s
only appearance in this region, as
well as the only local opportunity
to view “Rate it X," which is not
available on videotape.
The showing is at 8 p.m. Admis
sion is $2 for students, $4 for gen
eral admission.
