Bulldogs win handily
over Ole Miss, MSU
By JONATHAN TULLY
Sports Editor
In 1987 and 1989, Georgia’s
gymnastics team won the national
title.
In 1987, Georgia’s men’s tennis
team won the national title as well
Now in 1989, the netters con
tinue their drive for Georgia his
tory as they return from a grueling
trip to Mississippi with two road
wins under their belt.
The Bulldogs defeated Ole Miss
on Saturday and Mississippi State
on Sunday by identical scores of 7-
2, extending their record to 14-4
and their Southeastern Conference
record to 3-1, and giving them a
chance to play some of their SEC
rivals at home, including sixth-
ranked Kentucky next Saturday
and Vanderbilt Sunday.
Head coach Manuel Diaz said
the chance to play close rivals at
home is welcome.
“We get a nice SEC home stand,
with four good home matches,"
Diaz said. “Our toughest will be
against Kentucky, but the next day
we play Vanderbilt, who beat Ken
tucky. It goes to show that our con
ference is the strongest in the
country."
On Saturday, the Bulldogs faced
one of the up nnd coming teams in
this strong conference, Ole Miss,
and put them down handily. A1
Parker, ranked second in the na
tion, defeated Dave Randall at No.
1 singles, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, to push the
Bulldogs along.
The Bulldogs then went to
nearby MSU to face the Maroons
Sunday. Once again, Parker had
little trouble at No 1 singles, de
feating MSU’s top player, Austra
lian Mark Jeffrey, 6-3, 6-1.
Francisco Montana and TJ. Mid
dleton also won in two sets, Mon
tana at No 3 singles over John
Holt and Middleton at No 4 singles
over Kevin Chase.
Diaz was generally pleased with
the Bulldogs’ performance, as they
showed they could win a tough
road meet.
“Ole Miss has an excellent team,
probably its best ever," Diaz said
“And Mississippi State should be
ranked next week for the first time
We went in there, and proved we
can play with a lot of intensity on
the road I think we benefited
from losses to LSU and Miami on
the road earlier in the season.
We’re a better team, and we did a
great job agninst two very tough
teams."
