Georgia tiacksters trip
in Florida State meet
By MARK GOULD
Sports Writer
The Georgia track team ran into
a little trouble in their meet Sat
urday and Sunday at Florida
State. A couple of members ran
into it literally.
During the running of the 1500-
meter race, an unknown spectator
jumped onto the track, interferring
with Georgia runners John Hayes
and Eric Tyson. Hayes and Tyson,
who were favored to finish in the
top three spots along with Eric
Reade, fell to the ground and out of
the race. Reade managed to hurdle
over the spectator and the two
downed runners and finish the
race in first place with a time of
3:53, a personal best
Meanwhile, in the 100-meter
dash, Dwayne Moms captured an*
other victory for Georgia as he took
control of the pack to win with a
time of 10.75.
Bill Jones also tacked up a vic
tory for the Dogs as he leaped to a
height of 6-10 to take the high
jump.
The men also won the 400-meter
relay with a time of 4:29.
For the women, Kim Engel set a
school record, as well as a new na
tional mark for the year, in the jav
elin with a throw of 189-2 to take
first place.
In the high jump, Lisa Morrison
also set a personal best with a
jump of 5-8 3/4 to capture a second-
place finish for the team.
Finally, in the long jump, Na
tasha Rogers and Anita Hooks took
first and second place with their
jumps of 19-5 and 19-4 respec
tively.

team dropped just two matches in
overpowering Southeastern Con
ference opponents Vanderbilt and
Tennessee over the weekend.
The two victories run Georgia’s
winning streak to 12 and ups its
overall record to 19-3. The lady
netters are also second in the con
ference with a 5-1 record.
Winning 108 out of the 143
games, Georgia failed to drop a set
in soundly whipping Vanderbilt on
Saturday. Shannan McCarthy led
the way, recording a 6-1, 6-2 vic
tory over Valerie Young at number
one singles. Stacey Schefllin con
tinued her comeback from a three-
week hiatus due to injury, easily
racing to a 6-4, 6-1 victory over
Denise Stauffer at number two sin
gles. Caryn Moss, Elizabeth Alex
ander, Jill Waldman, and Tonya
Bogdonas also recorded singles vic
tories.
The three doubles teams also
had little trouble racing to
straight-set victories. McCarthy
and Schefflin won handily at
number one, 6-1, 6-3 over Yoi
and Kristina Lynch.
Tennessee proved to be a little
stiffer challenge, as the lady net
ters were forced to go to the dou
bles matches to clinch the 7-2
victory.

"it was a tough
weekend for us.”
— Jeff Wallace,
Women's tennis coach
McCarthy and SchefTlin clinched
the match, rallying from a set
down to defeat Wendy Ouwendijk
and Sabrina Cherichell i, 4-6, 6-2,
6-3.
Georgia head coach J* fT Wallace
said Georgia had to overcome some
changes in their normal match
format to record the mpressive
victories.
‘It was a tough week* nd for us,"
Wallace said. “We had 'o play an
early match on Saturda • and then
sit around and wait or a late
match on Sunday."
