Chicken Scratch is ‘surprise’ pop
Chicken Scratch: Likes to play for anyone who listens; best show was for 15 people
Check out their original sound at 40 Watt Club tonight
By RACHEL CURRY
Contributing Writer
Chicken Scratch will be playing at the 40 Watt Club
tonight.
Chicken Scratch? That's right, and would you be
lieve they’re from New Jersey?
Don’t expect a Springsteen or Bon Jovi clone
though. This three-man rock band is bringing their
highly-original sound to the 40 Watt tonight.
Highly original is only one way to describe their
style. Funky, shrewd, callous, odd (definitely), com
ical and zany are few others. But Kevin Kelly, the ,
band’s lead singer and guitarist calls it “pop music."
“It's pop music not in the sense that most people
would think. It has elements of pop with surprises
thrown in," he said. “Songs go one way, and then go a
totally different direction."
“It’s hard to describe your own style," said
drummer Chuck O’Connell. 'There’s a New Jersey
style, but we're not it."
Chicken Scratch has been together for three years
and are touring to promote their hilariously-titled
album, “Important People Lose Their Pnnts." They
embarked on the tour in late February and will be on
the road until the end of March.
"It’s more hectic than our first tour. This time
there are more shows and more driving," O'Connell
said.
He’s not kidding. The band will play about 30 gigs
on their five-week tour.
“We started in Baltimore, Md., and we’re now in
Orlando, Fla. After we come to Athens, well hit parts
of the midwest," said Kelly.
Even though they have a hectic schedule, they
seem to enjoy performing immensely.
“It’s boring when we’re not playing," O’Connell
said.
They don’t need a huge audience to make them
happy, either. Chicken Scratch will play to anyone
who wants to listen, and they’ll love it.
“As long as there are at least five people who want
to be entertained, we can play and have a good time,”
Kelly said. "We had one of our best shows playing to
15 people."
Junior League will sponsor
‘Puss in Boots’ March 9-11
By RICHARD MARTIN
Contributing Writer
Performances for 'Puss in Boots'
are March 911 at 7 p.m. For ticket
information and reservations call
357-7887.
For the first time in six years,
the Town and Gown Players spon
sored by the Junior League of
Athens will present a show geared
toward young audiences.
“Puss in Boots,” a play based on
a centuries-old fairy tale about a
talking cat, will be performed at
the Athens Community Theatre
from March 9-11.
The show will also be performed
at several Athens-aren middle
schools.
Director Susan Hinckley pointed
out many interesting aspects that
concern the play. She designed a
very innovative set, using creative
lighting techniques and multi-pur
pose set pieces.
Hinckley also noted that nine of
the cast members are University
students. She Baid that this is a
new concept, because most stu
dents interested in drama stay
within the campus drama pro
gram.
Hinckley wanted to stress that
the play is not just for children.
“It is not a kiddie show, it is
aimed for a fifth-grade audience,
but adults will also enjoy it," she
said.
Alison Reich has the role of Puss
in the play. Reich, who has ap
peared in several plays which in
clude “Steel Magnolias” and
“Romeo and Juliet," is very excited
about the project.
“It's going to be a great play, it’s
something that both children and
adults will enjoy,” Reich said.
The play will be interpreted for
Town and Gown Players: To
young audiences for the first
the hearing impaired. Zan
Thornton will sign the show. She
has worked with sign language for
many years and helped teach sign
language to Sesame Street’s
Chantex the Orangutan.
The show will feature original
music composed by Ann Duck
worth, an Atlanta-based musician,
who has written material for va
rious plays, including "Higher
Ground 1 ’ and "Texas Two-Stepping
with the Girls.”
Duckworth will appear in person
on opening night to help kick off
the show.

time in six years
for the Center for East-West Trade
policy and producer of the play, ex
pecta to perform for a total of 500
students
"If the play is successful, they,
with the continued support of the
Junior League of Atnens, will
make a show for young adults,” he
said.
He said he would like to see a
continued trend of classic fairy
tales that are more interactive, in
which the audience and the actors
participate with one another.
Gower feels the fact that the
play is accessible to the hearing
impaired brings a creative aspect
to the play.
"It creates a new artistic dimen
sion to the hearing through seeing
, Zan act out the sign language," he
said.
