Georgia Netters: Cream of the collegiate tennis crop again
Parker drops to No. 3 in rankings
By RANDY WALKER
Sports Writer
Northwestern’s Todd Martin replaced A1 Parker of
Georgia as the nation’s No. 1 collegiate tennis player
yesterday in the new Volvo Tennis Collegiate rank
ings.
Parker falls to the No. 3 position behind Martin and
Steve Bryan of Texas.
The Georgia team (7-1) dropped from their pre
season rank of No. 2 to the third position. Parker and
Murphy Jensen dropped from their No. 2 doubles
rankings to No. 6.
‘The rankings don’t really matter that much,”
Parker said.“What’s really important is that the team
does well and that the team wins."
Since the Jan. 6 rankings announced Parker as the
No 1 player, the Claxton native lost to both Martin
and Bryan in head-to-head confrontations. Martin
bested Parker 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 in Georgia’s 5-4 win over
Northwestern in Chicago, while Bryan beat Parker 7-
6, 6-4 in the semi-finals of the ITCA National Indoors.
The top three players are all very close,” Georgia
coach Manuel Diaz said. “All the players ranked from
No. 4 through No. 10 should move around in the rank
ings from one week to another.”
Despite losing Wade McGuire and David Wolf for
the year due to injuries, and Francisco Montana to the
rofessional circuit, the Georgia team is still able to
over around the top of the rankings.
“I’m very excited about the team ranking,” Diaz
said. "We’ve been winning some very close matches.
Our players are thriving on the competition and the
pressure and they’re coming through in tough situa
tions.”
Stanford held on to the No. 1 spot in the team rank
ings while Cal-Berkeley moved up from No. 6 to the
No. 2 position. After Georgia at No. 3, is Miami at No.
4, Pepperdine at No. 5, and Tennessee at No. 6. Har
vard, the No. 7 ranked team, climbed into the top
echelon of the rankings for the first time since the late
1800’s.
Rounding out the top ten is UCLA at No. 8, UC-Ir-
vine at No. 9 and Kentucky at No. 10.
The top ten singles rankings after Parker are Stan
ford’s Jonathan Stark at No. 4, Jose-Luis Noriega of
San Diego at No. 5, JefT Chiang of Columbia at No. 6,
Byron Black of Southern Cal at No. 7, Conny Falk of
Miami at No. 8, Stephane Simian of South Carolina at
No. 9, and Gilles Ameline of Wake Forest at No. 10

Lady Netters retain No. 4 ranking despite loss to top-ranked Stanford
McCarthy moves up to No. 6, Schefflin stays put at No.7
By MICHELLE NOBLE

The Georgia women’s tennis
team managed to retain its No. 4
team ranking in the new Volvo
Tennis Collegiate rankings despite
u crushing 6-0 loss to No. 1 Stan
ford in the semifinals of the US-
TA/ITCA National Indoor
Collegiate Team Championships.
Stanford’s Sadra Birch remains
the No. 1 singles player in the
rankings released yesterday, while
Meredith McGrath of Stanford,
Andrea Farley of Florida, and
Ginger Helgeson of Pepperdine are
tied for the No. 2 ranking.
Georgia’s Shannan McCarthy (16-
5) moved from No. 6 to No. 5,
Stacey Schefflin (19-4) remained at
No. 7, and Caryn Moss (20-6)
dropped from No. 4 to No. 13.
Stanford, which retained its No.
1 ranking, played the first two
rounds of the Team Indoors
without McGrath, who was playing
a professional tournament.
McGrath upset the No. 11 player in
the world, Jana Novotna, before
falling to No. 15 Katerina Maleeva
in the Virginia Slims Tournament
of Indian Wells. McGrath flew in to
Madison, Wis. for the semifinal
match against Georgia.
“(McGrath) was the last player
to be entered into the Virginia
Slims tournament, so I expected
her to be the first to lose. But she
screwed up and won," Stanford
women’s tennis coach Frank
Brennan said. “I took a calculated
risk, but I certainly would not have
wanted to piny Georgia without
her on the court.”
Brennan had his strongest six
players on the court for only the
second time this year in the match
against Georgia. Five of the singles
matches were straight set victo
ries, with Shawn McCarthy taking
the only Georgia Bet from Lisa
Green at No. 5 singles, losing 2-6,
6-3, 6-1.
But Georgia women’s coach Jeff
Wallace was not disapointed with
his team’s 6-0 loss.
‘We fought hard in every match,
but they just had a better day,”
Wallace said. “Stanford is the best
team in the country right now, but
they’re beatable. If we had played
them outside it might’ve been a dif
ferent story.”
The Lady Dogs’ next dual match
is at home against Kansas on
Sunday at noon. The unranked
Lady Jayhawks have no players in
the top 50.
Men chomp Gators; host GT today
By RANDY WALKER

Mike Morrison lost the lone singles match for
Georgia as the men’s tennis team defeated No. 15
Florida 6-3 Monday at Henry Feild Stadium.
The Dogs (7-1), who slipped to No. 3 in the latest
Volvo Tennis poll, take on Georgia Tech today at 2 pm.
Morrison lost to the Gator’s Bruce Haddad 6-3, 7-6
(10-8) at the No. 2 singles slot as the Dogs clinched the
match after dominating the singles 5-1.
“(Haddad) ran down everything and didn’t miss,”
Morrison said. "I had to be aggressive to win points.
He didn’t give me anything.”
In the second set tie-breaker, it appeared as though
Haddad would end up giving Morrison the match. The
Wayside, N.J. native was stricken with cramps in his
thigh and groin.
“I started feeling (the cramps) when I was up 6-5 in
the second," Haddad said. “It didn’t hurt when I hit
groundstrokes but when I Berved and stretched it
killed.”
Morrison bolted to a 4-0 lead in the tie-break on nu
merous unforced errors from Haddad. The Gator
freshman crawled back into the tie-break as Morrison
also began missing off the ground.
But ns Haddad hit a backhand down the line
passing shot to tie the tie-break score at five points
apiece, he fell to the ground in pain from the cramps
after clenching his fists in celebration of the shot.
Haddad saved three set points before closing Morrison
out 10-8 on a forehand passing shot.
T didn’t know how I’d feel in a third set, so I gave it
everything I had the rest of the tie-break and tried to
forget about the cramps," Haddad said.
Southern Cal transfer Murphy Jensen clinched the
match for Georgia at No. 5 singles with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4
victory over Florida’s Jim Spencer, a transfer from
Clemson.
Al Parker, who dropped from the nation’s No. 1 slot
to No. 3 in this week's rankings, defeated Florida’s
David Blair at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-2. Patricio Arnold
at No. 4, and Jim Childs at No. 6 both won matches
after losing first sets, while Hector Nevares won 6-4,
7-6 at No. 3.
“I’m proud of the way our team played today,"Flo
rida coach Ian Duvenhage said. “We’re a very young
team with little experience. We were just matched up
against a team who has been around the blocks a few
times.”
