Hill Community sponsors concert to benefit local charities
By RACHEL CURRY
Contributing Writer
Why not do something fun
during this week before finals?
You'll get a chance to do juBt that
on March 16 at Legion FHeld.
Even better, you can help others
while you relax and enjoy yourself.
Hill Community is sponsoring
the event, which is a benefit con
cert for AIDS Athens, Project Safe
and the Athens Area Homeless
Shelter.
Sophomore Mark Douglas is or
ganizing the concert. He got the
funding from the Residence Hall
Association to have bands play for
Hill Community.
"We are trying to get the whole
University involved, but originally
it was just a community effort,” he
said.
All proceeds will go to local char
ities.
“We picked local charities, be
cause we wanted to show that we
care about Athens and give sup
port to Athens charities,” Douglas
said.
Douglas encourages everyone to
attend the concert.
"The more people we can get out
here, the more we can help these
charities,” he said.
The bands lined up to play are
The Iroquois Cowboys, Moods
Amuck (part of the defunct A Few
Kids With Bicycles), Drum and
Wire and The Simpletons, who are
headlining the show.
“All the bands are donating their
time and talent, and that helps us
out a lot,” Douglas said.
Iroquois Cowboys are starting at
7 p.m., Moods Amuck at 8 p.m
Drum and Wire at 9 p.m, and The
Simpletons will begin around 9:46
p.m.
The Simpletons is a local band
who, according to lead singer and
guitarist Warren Southall, “play
covers from Jimmy Buffett to The
Violent Femmes plus originals.”
The band's name is reflected in
their music.
“We play the simplest version of
every song we do,” said Southall.
Added drummer Jeff Heinz, "We

don’t try to be complex.”
The band has been working on
originals lately, but they continue
to ao covers.
“People like to hear something
they can sing along to,” said
Southall.
Heinz gave another explanation.
"We play covers, because we

have to make money, but we’re
constantly working on originals,
because we’d like to be a totally
originals band and still pay the
bills.”
Even so, the Simpletons are ex
cited about the opportunity to help
others while getting exposure at
the same time.
“We love to do benefits," de
clared bass player Trov

Aubrey.
Then with a smirk and a shrug,
“Uh...this is our first one.”
So go see the Simpletons and the
other bands and help three very
worthy causes, while enjoying
great music.
Tickets will be sold at the gate.
They are $3 with a student I.D., $4
without. The show starts at 7 p.m.
‘Let’s Blow Thru Europe’ offers tongue-in-cheek humor in travel guide
BOOK REVIEW
By ELIZABETH QRADDY
Special Sections Editor
“Let’s Blow Thru Europe~
Thomas Neenan and Greg Hancock
published by Mustang Publishing
Co. 110.95 in paperback.
“Let’s Blow Thru Europe” is a ri
otous spoof on the “Let’s Go To Eu
rope” books. Thomas Neenan and
Greg Hancock make you laugh 'til
you throw up, while bringing Eu
rope home in language college stu
dents can understand — about
eighth grade level, in other words.
As a travel guide, “Let’s Blow”
may be a gamble, however. The ad
vice is a little shaky at times, based
as it is upon a ferociously un
abashed ethnocentrism on the part
of the authors.
Take, for instance, their advice
on monetary exchange.
‘In our opinion, the best defense
is a good offense. When you go into
a restaurant, tell the waiter you’ll
be paying in American money... If
there’s any argument, remember
that America stands for freedom of
choice. If they don’t like your
greenbacks, walk down the street
to another restaurant.”
Neenan and Hancock’s advice on
travel fashion is also dubious.
‘If you decide to go with the
'Euro Look,’ we have just one word
to say: BLACK. Young Europeans
wear more black than your average
Orthodox rabbi."
The only danger in wearing a lot
of black is that someone might mis
take you for an Athens townie in
stead of a European.
The authors don’t pretend that

their guide is definitive or even ac
curate by placing a generic
guidebook disclaimer after the in
troduction.
“All the prices, addresses, and
phone numDers were absolutely,
100% correct when we wrote this
book. Trust us. Not a single mis
take.
“Just remember: the book was
totally correct when we wrote it. If
there are errors or things that are
out of date, well, hey, things
change. It’s not our fault. Our ad
vice is, don’t sweat the little stuff*.
“On the other hand, if you find
really major changes — like,
London is now in Germany, or the
Swiss have a sense of humor — let
us know, because that counts as
Big Stuff, and we might want to
put it in our next edition."
In fact, some of the “Let's Blow”
information could prove useful.
The high points:
• On East Berlin — “BIG TIP:
To the average East German,
humor is the fluid inside your eye
ball. Do not make jokes, especially
witticisms about East German
mothers-in-law, tractor factories or
food lines.”
• On Amsterdam — “You may be
shocked by the glaring absence of
high-profile office buildings or
monuments like the Eiffel Tower
or Seattle Space Needle...As we
will see later, the Dutch have other
ways to define ’high.’ ”
