Hoops: Dogs, Lady Dogs await NCAA; intramurals finished
Hell Boys take title
By ROBERT McDONALO
Sports Writer
March Madness, intramural
basketball style, ended Thursday
night at the Coliseum with the
Hell Boys, BSU Assault and Jr.
Speedboys claiming
championships
The Hell Bovs dunked their
way past the Speedboys 60-54,
the Assault shed the Killer
Lambs 37 29 and the Jr. Speed-
boys bounced Double Dnbble 56-
46.
In a contest that actually lived
up to its pre-game hype, the Hell
Boys, a team consisting mainly of
University football players, ran
to an early 10-ooint lend and
looked primed for yet another
blowout.
But the Speedboys' Dennis
Long almost single-handedly
kept his team in striking distance
in the first half, scoring 12 of his
game-high 20 points in the first
20 minutes.
The slow start really hurt us,”
Long said. “But we pulled to
gether and still had chance to win
at the end.”
The Hell Boys came out of the
intermission leading 35-26, but
their run-and-gun offense began
to waver at points down the
stretch, while tne Speedboy’s de
fense picked up. A jumper by
Long tied the game at 52-all with
4:00 to play, but the Speedboys
never took the lead.
Up by two with under a minute
to play, the victors sealed the
game with two free thows and
then put their signature on it ns
Mike Jones slammed home their
final two points.
In the women’s final, the As
sault won their second consec
utive championship.
"We did what we had to do and
everybody played well,” Assault
coach JefT Bagwell said. "We
have just about everybody
coming back, so now we can
worry about a threepete.”
The Lambs pulled within four
late in the second half, but six un
answered points by the Assault’s
Angela Denton put the game out
of reach. Connie Deverell led the
Lambs with 10 points.
In the 5-10 & under
championship, the Jr. Speedboys
posted a 30-23 lend at the half
and held Double Dribble at iirms
length over the second 20 min
utes thanks to some strong ball-
handling and the hot shooting of
Andy Wineberg.
Texas: Mix between UK, GT
By GENE WILUAMS
Sports Editor
According to Georgia coach Hugh Durham, Texas,
the Bulldogs’ first-round opponent in the NCAA tour
nament, is a cross between the Kentucky Wildcats
and Georgia Tech.
‘The Longhorns press, shoot the three-pointer, and
lay an uptempo style similar to Kentucky and they
ave excellent personal and a super perimeter game
like Tech," Durnam said.
The Longhorns aren’t pin-shy. They are averaging
94.2 points per game ana have taken 589 three-point
shots, canning 222 of them. Georgia, the SEC’s best
three-point shooting squad, only nailed 162 of 384 at
tempts and averaged 82.5 points per game.
"What Texas does is shoot it," Durham said. “They
auickly rebound the ball and shoot it downcourt. Then
tney spread the floor and jack up a three.”
The Longhorns are led by guard Travis Mays.
Mays, averaging 23.6 points and 5.4 rebounds, is the
1990 Southwest Conference co-Player of the Year. It is
the second consecutive year he has earned that honor,
making him the first person in SWC history to win
back-to-back Player of the Year titles. Also, if the se
nior scores 23 points, he will become the SWCs all-
time leading scorer.
"We must keep pressure on him in order to keep
him under control, 4 forward Marshall Wilson said.
In the Longhorns’ 17th game of the season, Mays
suffered a hyperextended finger against Arkansas.
Going into that game, Myers had six 30-point per
formances during the season. He has been forced to
wear tape on that finger the remainder of the season
and that has cut into his effectiveness. Since that
game, he hasn’t had another 30-point game and the
Longhorns finished the season losing five of their last
11 regular-season games.
Texas also features guard Joey Wright and forward
Lance Blanks. Wright is averaging 19.5 points per
game and 4.5 rebounds a game. He scored 46 points in
a game against Stetson and 17 rebounds against
Florida. Blanks is not shooting blanks with 20.2
points and 4.3 rebounds a game.
Durham is not concerned about whether his Bull
dogs will be able to keep up with the run-and-gun
Longhorns.
"We haven’t played that many slow down teams
this year," Durham said. “The SEC is not a slow-down
league. LSU and Kentucky love to run and we beat
both of those teams. We must come down the court
and work for good shots.”
One of the players Durham will be counting on to
bounce back is Litterial Green. Green had a night
mare outing against Vanderbilt in the SEC tourna
ment, missing all nine shots he took from the floor and
finishing with only three points from the charity
stripe.
"Litterial has had bad games before, but he will bo
unce back. He always has,” Durham said. "Green is a
scorer and ns long as he takes good shots, I’m not wor
ried about it. A scorer is supposed to shoot and Litte
rial will definitely put the ball in the hoop."
Texas has played two SEC opponents — Florida
and LSU. The Longhorns lost to LSU 124-113 and
they defeated the Gators, with Dwayne Schintzius
and Livingston Chatman, 105-94. Georgia split with
Florida and defeated LSU twice.
Georgia and Texas will hook up Friday evening at 7
p.m. The game will be shown on ESPN. The winner
will face the winner of the Purdue-Northeast Loui
siana tilt on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Lady Dogs ready for NCAA tourney
By CHRIS LANCETTE
Sports Writer
Before the SEC tournament in
Albany two weeks ago, the sixth-
ranked Georgia women’s basket
ball team said it was the most con
fident it had ever been. They then
played uncharasterically poor and
got waxed by Tennessee.
But that game is nearly a for
gotten memory now and the Lady
Dogs again say they’re ready —this
time for the NCAA tournament
that begins in the Coliseum
Sunday at 2:30 p.m. They’ll play

the winner of Thursday’s Ar-
kansas-UCLA game.
“First of all, I was disappointed
in the loss in the SEC (tourna
ment) to a Tennessee team that we
had beaten earlier in the season
and should beat again if we play
them,” Georgia coach Andy
Landers said at a press conference
Tuesday in McWhorter Hall.
"Since then, we’ve come back,
taken a couple of dayB off and went
to work.
‘Through that hard work, we’ve
started to see some improvements
in intensity and and execution
which we lacked in the tourna
ment.”
Georgia team captain Sharon
Baldwin said the intense practices
have paid off.
“We’ve had a couple of really
tough practices,” she said. "We’re
ready Tor the NCAA tournament."
Guard Lady Hardmon agreed,
saying that SEC tourney game
against Tennessee didn’t destroy
Georgia’s momentum, and that the
team can make it to the Final Four
in Knoxville, Tenn.
‘The loss to Tennessee didn’t
break down our confidence,” she
said. “We felt like we need to do
more on the court and commu
nicate better. We’re still positive
now. We’re still saying we want the
Final Four. We want Tennessee
again.”
Hardmon and company may get
their wish if Georgia, one of only
five teams in the country to receive

a bid to the NCAA tourney in each
of its nine years, advances through
the West Regional —clearly the
strongest brocket in the country.
Georgia is the second seed be
hind region-host Stanford. Ten
nessee is in the East Regional and
could face the Lady Dogs in the
NCAA semifinal game.
How strong is the western
bracket? Eight of the 12 teams in
that region are Top 25 teams. Four
are Top 10 teams.
For the Lady Dogs to be invited
to taste The Big Orange, they must
first win their home game, then fly
to Stanford, Calif., and look to beat
powers like Stanford, Stephen F.
Austin, Long Beach State, UNLV
and Hawaii.
By comparison, the East Re
gional has only two Top 25 teams
and one Top 10 team — defending
national champion Tennessee. The
Lady Volunteers aren’t likely to
face any serious competition in
their region.
‘The (West) bracket is loaded,”
Landers said. “By far it’s the
toughest in the country.”
Tickets for Sunday’s contest are
only $2 for students, $5 for non
students and can be purchased at
the gnte.
