Lady Dogs face tough test in Lady Razorbacks
By CHRIS LANCETTE
Sports Writer
The biggest foe the seventh-
ranked Georgia women’s basket
ball faces in its opening round
game of the NCAA tournament in
the Coliseum at 2 30 p.m may not
be the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks.
The Lady Dogs have an enemy
within.
In several games this season,
Georgia has been bitten by the
panic demon, lapsing into a tum-
over-fest and forcing bad shots —
most notably throughout most of
the SEC tournament game against
Tennessee.
“I think that’s it,” said freshman
Camille Lowe. “Especially in that
SEC game."
But the Lady Dogs say they’ve
put that loss long behind them and
they want pig meat.
“When’s Arkansas getting here,”
junior guard Kim Berry asked
trainers during practice Thursday
afternoon. She looked down at her
watch awaiting the answer, appar
ently hoping the Lady Razorbacks,
an overtime winner against UCLA
Wednesday and who won’t arrive
until Saturday, would want to mix
HE RFF has it,
it up immediately.
Point guard Lady Hardmon is
equally as anxious. She stuffed a
couple of dunks after practice.
Asked previously if the Lady
Dogs could beat the tall Arkansas
team and beat the powerful West
Region teams to get to the Pinal
Four, she said, “We’re goin’. Defi
nitely.*
Georgia knows it has to do more
than talk.
The first thing it has to do is con
trol the pace of the game and stay
calm.
'We can’t let the other team take
control of the game,” Lowe said.
“We’ve got to work really hard
early and play our game.”
The Georgia hoopsters’ game is
spelled R-U-N.
They are most effective when
they’re playing their aggressive,
pressing and trapping defenses —
creating turnovers and working
the fast break.
The defense is so effective be
cause 6-2 forward Stacey Ford
combines her height and quickness
to envelop dribblers in the oppo
nents’ back court.
If the Lady Razorbacks get the
ball past Ford, they’ve got to con
tend with speedsters Hardmon and
Adrienne Shuler (who’ve ac
counted for 121 steals between
them), hustler Sharon Baldwin (63
more pocket-picks) and shot-
blocker Tammye Jenkins (rejector
of 25 shots this season).
Offensively, Hardmon is one of
the nation’s premier fast-breakers.
Shuler and Baldwin also run the
floor.
The game may develop into a
relay race because the run-and-
gun Arkansas matches up simi
larly to Georgia.
Southwest Conference Player of
the Year Delmonica DeHorney (6-
4) bolsters the team in the paint.
Blair Savage, 6-1, plays at one for
ward spot, while 5-10 Christi Wil
lson pi ay 8 point guard. Georgia’s
front three are 6-4, 6-2 and 5-10
“It could be a battle royale down
low between Tammye (Jenkins)
and DeHorney” Georgia coach
Andy Landers said Wednesday
after practice. “Both are 6-4 and
good athletes. It’s going to be a
heck of a fight ... a fun thing to
watch.”
Student tickets can be pur
chased for $2 at the ticket window
Sunday.

Dear UGA Students, Faculty and Staff:
I'm writing to solicit your support when our seventh-
ranked Lady Bulldog basketball team plays its last home
game of the season Sunday afternoon.
The NCAA tournament is by far the most exciting time of the
season for our team. Nothing in this sport compares with
the thrill of competing in a sudden-death situation for the
national championship. It's what wc shoot for, what we
prepare for, throughout the regular season.
We begin our quest for the NCAA Championship this Sunday
afternoon against Arkansas at the Georgia Coliseum. The
Razorbacks have an outstanding team. Readers of the sports
pages might recall that they handed Texas its first-ever
Southwest Conference loss three weeks ago. The Longhorns'
winning streak had extended 157 games before they lost in
Austin to the Hogs.
You can see we have some difficult work ahead of us. We'll
need all the crowd participation wc can get, not only to
win the game, but also to maintain respect in the eyes of
the NCAA. Come time to pick next year's game sites, the
NCAA will pay close attention to home attendance figures.
Our ladies have worked extremely hard to position
themselves for a run at the National Championship. That
run begins Sunday at the Coliseum at 2:30pm. A vocal crowd
could help us win and advance to the next round of the
tournament.
We look forward to seeing you there.

This weekend, the University
of Georgia will take eight mem
bers of the women’s swimming
and diving team to Austin, Texas,
to compete in the 1990 NCAA
Championship Meet.
Junior Shelia Taormina will
compete in the 400-yard and 200-
yara individual medley, and se
nior Karla Mosdell, the SEC
Champion in the 50-yard free
style, will enter both that event
and the 100-yard freestyle.
“We are very excited about the
NCAAs,” said coach Jack
Bauerle. “We feel that the confer
ence meet was a good warmup for
NCAAs, and I think well do
well.”
Freshman Malin Gustavsson
will compete in three events for
Georgia — the 200-yard indi
vidual medley, and the 100-yard
and 200-yard freestyle. Paige
Wilson will enter both the 100-
yard and 200-yard fly.
Lee Ann Fletcher will compete
at the NCAA meet on the three-
meter board. Fletcher, who spent
last Monday night in the hospital
with food poisoning, just missed
qualifying for the one-meter com
petition, falling six points shy of a
qualifying score.
“We’ve got some quality people
that will definitely score, and
that will help us as a team. Our
lack of depth, which has been a
problem all year, shouldn’t hurt
us too much, Bauerle said.
