Diamond Dogs win 12th straight; dump UV 11-6

Baseball America's 17th-ranked
Georgia baseball team scored eight
runs in the fourth inning and de
feated the Virginia Cavaliers 11-6
Thursday afternoon at Foley Field,
marking the team’s 12th straight
victory.
Georgia’s win completes a four-
game sweep of the Cavaliers and
improves the team’s record to 18-4.
Its 12-game winning streak is the
team’s longest since 1980, when
the Dogs won 13 in a row.
“I think the fact that we’re a
good hitting ball club contributes
to our winning,” Georgia coach
Steve Webber said. “We put to
gether a big inning today because
we effectively took advantage of
our hits and our opponent’s er
rors."
With the bases loaded in the
fourth and the game tied 1-1,
catcher Terry Childers singled in
first baseman Doug Radziewicz,
who had walked to lead off the in
ning.
A two-run shot over the left-field
wall by right fielder Bruce Chick ,
and a solo home run by Radziewicz
topped off the eight-run inning and
gave the Dogs a 9-1 lead.
"I had a feeling it might get out,”
Radziewicz said about his home
run. "The pitch was a fastball and I
think I hit it pretty well. When I
saw the right fielder look up, I
started to get a good feeling.”
Radziewicz (.302) went two-for-
four on the day and came away
with two RBI.
Senior right-hander Matt
Hoitsma, who is attempting to re
cover from an arm injury that
forced him to miss all of last year,
allowed five runs on eight hits
through five innings to pick up his
second win of the season (2-0). Se
nior Ray Kirschner relieved
Hoitsma and gave up one run in
the final four innings.
The Cavaliers, 4-14-1, jumped
out to an early lead in the ball
game. With one away in the first
inning, UVA third baseman Richie
SharfT singled and center fielder
Chris Kughn doubled to put run
ners on second and third. Sharff
then scored on a groundout to third
by first baseman Mike Lindner to
give Virginia a 1-0 lead.
“It’s difficult to play defense
against Virginia because they like
to run the base pads,” Webber said.
“Hoitsma pitched well out there to
help us out and that enabled us to
score runs of our own.”
Virginia managed to pick up
four more runs in the fifth to make
the score 9-5, but that was as close
as they could get.
The Diamond Dogs countered
with two more of their own in the
sixth on an RBI double by third
baseman Jeff Cooper (.342) and an
RBI single by Radziewicz
For the third straight day, desig
nated hitter Brian Jester (.406),
who leads the team with seven
home runs, sat out with a bothered
hamstring.

Gym Dogs travel to Penn State in tune-up for SEC meet
By CHRIS LANCETTE

The third-ranked Georgia gym
nastics team could sluff oft against
16th-ranked Penn State on Sat
urday in State College, Penn. They
could just skip through town and
avoid injuries and rest up before
the following week’s SEC
championship in the Coliseum on
Saturday.
But that’s not the Gym Dogs
style.
“We’re not going to water down,”
assistant coach Scott Bull said
during practice Thursday. “We’re
going to go for as good a score as we
can get. I still think we can get a
190.
"We might rest a couple of
people on a couple of events but
we’re still going to put in as strong
a lineup.”
The philosophy might well pay
off. Florida won SECs last year and
then blew off a meet in Athens a
few days later.
They went to regionals in Ken
tucky and couldn’t get it going

Georgia is hoping to replace the
Florida road score a few weeks ago
with the Penn State score. Gym
nastics teams must count two road
scores in it’s National Qualifying
Score (an average of two away,
three home and the regional
scores) — the formula used to de
termine who goes to nationals.
That accounts for one-third of
the score. The teams with the 12
highest NQSs are invited to na
tionals.
Penn State is led by the nation’s
second-ranked vaulter, Lisa Mai*

Senior Corrinne Wright and
freshman Heather Stepp will again

seventh in the nation while Stepp
is ranked 13th.
