Blowing SEC championships could be just what
gymastics squad needed according to Yoculan
By CHRIS LANCETTE
Sports Writer
The fourth-ranked Georgia gym
nasties team (23-4) got a rude
awakening during spring break —a
third-place finish at the SEC
championships in Athens. The de
fending national champions scored
a 191.85, while second-ranked Ala
bama won the meet with a 193.55
and third-ranked LSU took second
with a 192.05.
But “blowing” (by Georgia coach
Suzanne Yoculan’s definition) the
meet may have been just what the
Lady Dogs needed.
They now realize how serious
they need to get about this week
end’s NCAA Southeast Regional in
Gainseville, Fla. — the meet that
counts for two-thirds of the na
tional championship qualifying
score.
‘1 don’t think performance or
gymnastic ability have anything to
do with where our team is right
now,” Yoculan said during practice
Monday. “(Repeating as national
champion) is coming down to
whether or not we have the proper
mental attitude.
“It’s very hard to have that win
ning attitude in meets unless we
have it in practice, and that’s one
place where we’ve fallen short all
year.
‘The team doesn’t come in (prac
tice) with the intention of pre
paring to win.”
Despite that constructive crit
icism, Yoculan said she thinks the
SEC meet served the Gym Dogs a
wake-up call.
“I’m confident about going to
Florida because we had the bad
SEC meet,” she said. “If we had a
good one, we may have taken
Florida for granted.”
History supports Yoculan’s
claim.
In every season since she arrived
in 1984, Georgia has blown one of
the last three meets — SECs, re
gional or nationals. Last season,
Georgia also blew the conference
meet (placing third), but domi
nated the regional in Lexington,
Ky., and then won the national
title in Athens.
And in 1987, the Lady Dogs won
the conference but bombed the re
gional and barely qualified for the
national championship meet it
ended up winning.
“Based on that history, I’m not
overly concerned (about Georgia’s
ability to rebound after a bad late-
season meet),” Yoculan said. “One
performance below our capability
isn’t indicative of what will happen
in the next two meets.”
The Gym Dogs have done partic
ularly well at regionals during the
last four years, winning three of
them.
Georgia SEC Notes: Corrinne
Wright placed second in the all-
around behind Alabama’s Marie
Robbins. Wright also won the bars
and floor and tied for fourth on the
floor.
Jennifer Carbone placed fifth
in the all-around, tying for fourth
on the beam , fifth on the floor and
ninth on the vault. Chris Rod is
placed third on the floor with a ca
reer-high 9.75. That marks the
sixth time this season she has
scored a 9.65 or better.
Sandy Rowlette, a freshman
who is the current school record
holder on vault, was scratched
from the vaulting lineup after ag
gravating a foot injury in warm
ups.
